A documentary from 1980 on the eruption of Mount St. Helens directed by Seattle filmmaker Otto Sieber and originally known as "Mount St. Helens: Keeper of the Fire."
From the VHS Box: "Following the blast, Otto Sieber and his film crew staggered down the ruined slopes of Mt. St. Helens. Blinded by ash and near death from exposure, he carried with him footage taken of the volcanic eruption and its devastating aftermath."
Also included is footage from before, during, and after the May 18th eruption, including a climb up the pre-eruption volcano and Gary Rosenquist's famous sequence of photos of the landslide and lateral blast.
This is a differently edited version of the filmstrip posted here: • Mount St. Helens - Kee... .

The opening song has been stuck in my head for 28 years from when i saw this documentary when I was about 10ish at a small St Helens museam in a small dark screening room. My younger sister and I were the only in attendance. I would sing the chorus to myself wondering about it for years then I decided to check here. Bingo found it! The graininess of the film, the clothing they wore, the way the sound slows down then catches back up as old films on a reel do, all reminds me of being young and how cool the older generation was to me. The beards, the cigarettes, trucker hats, the clothing style.... nostalgia.

Thanks for sharing this, Bryan. I first watched this film when I was a kid by renting it at the local library. The intro song and the "red" column of ash title shot at the start used to scare the hell out of me, but I used to rent it over and over.

I saw this video at the St Helens Museum as well. The visitor center was very new (and small) then. We drove around to some landmarks and looked over spirit lake. I was around 12 and visited with my family who is from the area. I'll never forget what I saw. Only a year or two after I think.

I just came into possession of almost all of Keith and Dorothy Stoffel's aerials taken on May 18. And all of Keith Ronnholm's photos. One of these days I hope to convert them from the slides.

Thank you for adding this video!!! I had this on VHS in the 80s/90s. As a kid I watched it every day and fell in love with Mt. St. Helens. I now live in the Pacific Northwest and have climbed Mt. St. Helens and hiked around it. Thank you so much!!!

Hiking on an active volcano, especially when it comes back to life after being quiet for over a century goes beyond nerves of steel to hike up and near the crater.

That sheriff who refused to take them down, and forced them to go back the other way, should have been stripped of his badge.

He was my metal shop teacher about 12 years later. Nice guy overall. Not sure what he had in mind when playing sheriff in 1980
@pianoman4rent

He was removed from his sheriff duties later on. It wasn't really his fault as he knew we weren't breaking the law but he was directed to cite us and refuse us the right to keep going on, downhill. We had alerted the public that there was no legally established "red zone". That meant that the State was responsible for the deaths of those that were unaware of the danger. It was a political move and also a money move. If the mountain had blown on Monday, the death toll would have been thousands but a deal was struck between the governor, Dixie Ray and Weyerhaeuser Paper company.

He may have been a nice guy but he swore at us like a drunken sailor. He was fired for using that kind of language while giving a citation. Now days, it would have been "Business as usual", the language he used. Shows how times have changed

I'll always remember hearing stories from my mom and grandma about that day. My mom, grandparents, aunt and uncle were living just 10 miles from the mountain when she blew on May 18th. It was my mom's 16th birthday(made for a memorable sweet 16)and my grandma had gotten up early that day to begin working on her cake. My mom was just waking up when the mountain blew. To this day, my mom is still kind of salty about the events that ruined her birthday.

A+ song & soundtrack, Dale! My mom was a high school Earth Science teacher & she had this documentary on VHS - my friends & I would watch it often in the '80s & early '90s (we're New Orleanians). "Keeper of the Fire" & "The Fire Below Us" are my favorite Mt. St. Helens documentaries. "St. Helens" is also a good movie - a solid cast. Art Carney was superb. It's sad to learn what happened to the lead actor, David Huffman, 4 yrs. after the film's release. My pal, Florent Retz, was the editor of that movie.

That sheriff at the end should have been charged with attempted murder for refusing to assist those 3 scientists, instead sending them back the way they came.
