I have watched Stanley Kubrick's space epic 2001: A Space Odyssey multiple times at various stages of my life. I've read Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 series twice. The film and the books, somewhat shaped my life. They gifted me with a unique, expansive spiritual experience. In this episode, I am going to explore a less explored aspect of 2001: A Space Odyssey; it's portrayal of isolation.

What's your favourite science fiction film of all time? Why? It could be in any language.

I cannot pick just one, for me there are 4 that pose deep questions in my psyche that I will forever wrestle with, them being:- 2001 Blade Runner Moon Interstellar. All of them pose philosophical questions never before seen in other movies.

Great list! Especially Moon. It is minimal, and poses profound questions about our identity. Severely underrated.

Blade runner. Especially with the transhuman agenda coming to fruition these days.

Oh yeah. Blade Runner and the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep are very critical in shaping my perspective. It kind of came full circle, when I moved closer to HK. The first time I went to Hong Kong, I was mesmerised. I walked for hours at night in the rain through the neon lit streets of HK with Vangelis' soundtrack in the headphones. I ate at a street noodle shop in the rain feeling like Deckard. I will never forget that day.

Haven't read the book. Reading infinite jest david foster wallace right now. That shits weird. Video games though. Dead space 1 and 2. If you haven't played.... Check out a walkthrough. David carpenter even said it would be a sci fi horror classic if anyone made a film.

To this day, I crave another film or book that evokes the same feelings as 2001. There have been many horror stories set in space, but so far as I know, only 2001 has captured the _true_ horror of the cosmos. The void is more terrible than any monster could ever be.

Read Three Body Problem series by Cixin Liu. Don't watch the Netflix series. Stick through the first book as it is essential, but a run of the mill mystery. The second and third, are some of the best sci fi I've ever read. Existential dread, spine chilling revelations and beautiful meandering and pondering through space. One of my favorite memories in life involve reading this book in a train station in rural China, got so into the book that I missed my train and had to wait for night fall. I cherished reading a few pages, looking up at the night sky to process what I read, and repeating the cycle. Didn't mind the wait.

The feelings of cold, affectless isolation represented in the movie are so striking because they are unnatural and uncomfortable. Humans are the most social of animals and most in need of contact, sharing and connection. From a sci-fi point of view, the movie makes clear that for humans to live in space, we must shed our humanity (the messy, organic life of Earth) and become more like the machines we've created to take us there. It's a starkly "unnatural" enterprise all around.

It is true, but it's also a bit weird to think about. The Three Body problem expands on this idea quite a bit. When the only ship survives that travels far away from the earth, out of reach, they also come to the same conclusion that they need to be something else. They are no longer human, in a sense.

@@NorthernDiaries You are very welcome. I'm still looking at your channel. Say, is it possible to provide me a list of all Solipsism experts in the world, that you know of?

@@Gloomer2000 I don't know about contemporary experts. But I will name philosophers and give you some references here. 1. Rene Descartes (mainly his Meditations on First Philosophy) 2. David Hume 3. Dark is my favorite show as well. I was actually about to make a video on Dark as well. I still might. I was going to write an episode on the choices we make and their consequences. Dark is essentially about choices.

Haven't watched it yet. It's Jim Jarmusch's film right? I absolutely loved his Paterson. I will watch it and update in this thread. Thanks for the suggestion :)
