Nothing wrong with a 6 string, I love mine. More strings don't make you a better player but they definitely don't make you worse. Just different musical opportunities. Plus it allows you to have the range of a bassist and a guitarist. Versatility is so valuable!

Anyone who hates on 6 string basses needs to buy one. After that the person will love it! Only the muting is hard. How do you mute the E and A string when playing the higher strings? Great Video !
@richbrownbass

Awesome lesson Rich, as is always the case. What also added inestimable value to this particular lesson is that you generously taught the foundation for soloing lines by literally demonstrating some lines. No criticism to other teachers on RU-vid ( they all are being generous with bass knowledge), but you are one of very few who show the audience how to transform the patterns and concepts into solo lines/phrases. Some may understand how to play a scale or arpeggio, and even learn other bass player’s bass solos, but may never “hear” their own ideas for soloing and phrasing. So their riffs and phrases sound more like drills. When you showed examples of how to create solo content, that set this video apart from millions of them. Thanks again.

Thank you so much, RJ. It means a lot to read these very kind words from you. I believe the beauty in those exercises is inherent. If I can help other to realize that beauty, I don’t think it will take long before they start to create their own lines. I truly appreciate this comment, and I thank you for tuning in.

While there are certainly pros and cons of differently stringed basses, I don’t understand the vigor some espouse their preference with. They are tools, not to be worshiped but to be used by the musician to make music with. Dragonetti killed on a 3 string, some play in 5ths, some use alternate tunings, some use extensions or a 5th or 6th (or 7th….) string. Lutes and viols have myriad varieties and courses of strings. Each different one provides a new manner to approach the music with, and a new perspective for your creativity. Sing proudly with whatever voice suits you and what you feel like expressing, and be open to new voices and perspectives always.
