This weeks 'Allotment' vlog episode is a little different! I let you know last week that i was planning to try out a bit of collaboration and vlogging on the move and i was heading to Chelmsford, Essex to visit Alex from The Essex Allotment... which i did do. BUT things did not go to plan. Somethings you just can't predict!
I did make it to his old allotment site to be a guest judge at their allotment competition but we had a lot more planned that unfortunately couldn't happen (all explained in the vlog!).
If you want to find out more about Alex's Project -
‪@TheEssexAllotment‬
And his IG account is - / the_essex_allotment
When i did get home i managed to pot up a load of lettuces from the slug-ridden cell trays into their own pots before they are big enough to plant out. The varieties i was potting up were -

@@JessieatPlot37 oh dear I have bought seeds for this coming season .the blurb said they taste like a cross between fresh asparagus and garden peas I bought some Jerusalem artichokes in waitress to taste to see if they might be worth growing but they tasted of handsoap, that was sad I was looking forward to trying them

I have a "free" packet of AP seeds, which must be heading towards 8 to 10 years old, in a tub, in the fridge. Now I know why they were a "free" gift. I may try to germinate one or two in 2025 just to check if they are, indeed, horrible ... then turf them, guilt-free.

No apology needed Jess. Totally unavoidable, feel sorry for Alex having to self isolate and hope he’s OK. The vlog was still enjoyable. Your fun personality is enough to make me smile. “It’s the slugs” 😂. I too don’t cope too well with this heat - the UK weather is bonkers. Have a good rest of the week, Cheers 🍷🥰

Hey Jessie - it’s unfortunate the trip didn’t go to plan but beyond your control and no apology necessary. I hope all turns out well on the track & trace for Alex. Will be nice to visit your sisters garden virtually I’m dead curious about those hedgehogs. Not a native species here and they are darn cute, and assuming something good for the garden as she seemed to be fostering a habitat. Ah the slugs, this year I did try some of the copper wire. Managed to find a huge roll that will last. While nothing is perfect for pests when you’re against using chemicals, I would say the beds I used it on some of the plants have less damage. Which is about all you can hope for. Although I just found a cutworm which the chicks had to fight over. I’m sure more to to found. Important question: somewhere along the line I wrote down a French rose (can’t find the accent symbol) you like to drink that was referenced in the comments (maybe here or Insta) anyway I lost my note so I could enquire at the liquor vendors here 😂
@JessieatPlot37
@JessieatPlot37 3 года назад
Hi Leanne, ah the hedgehogs are gorgeous! (and they eat slugs!) Oooh, i'm not sure what one that would have been. I'm quite partial to a french Rosè... i am definitely thinking of listing my drinking choices in the blurb each week though!

Dont be sorry, Jess! The positive note is that you got to travel after all the Covid madness. You should give yourself kudoz for travelling in such a heat :) Sunflowers - same for me. When I saw them, nada... Self planted/pooped out by birds - lush beautiful and slugs resistant. I stopped wondering why :D This year no sunflowers though, the wind crushed them all. :/

Holy Smokes, girl...ur WAY too hard on yourself for something totally beyond your control!! I thought your excursion was absolutely Fab! Great traveling shots of your transportation/expedition, your room, the wild drive to the allotment 👍... And then descriptive discussion of different points of each area through your eyes - obviously well-trained to spot different features unlike someone like myself who would be like a deer in the headlights! Nope... thought your trip was totally interesting! I know we'll get to see the farm again, I'll be patient 😊 In the meantime thanks for the 'ping' clarification...I was a bit stumped 🤔. So crack that rosè and keep your chin up, all is good! Cheers! 🍺🍷

Aw Jess. You’ll get to visit soon and we’ll go with you then. Totally unavoidable, it’s still strange times. Here in the US, some states are back to masking as the Delta variant is escalating. As always, you make whatever you’re doin, wherever you go fun and engaging. You could make taking the rubbish to the curb fun and entertaining! 🙃🥰 The rhubarb, sunflowers and fruit cages were gigantic! Mum being “merry and un-sympathetic”, hahaha! Hope Alex is ok. I'm glad you explained "pinging" to us. In the U.S. our less savory folk will have to wear a bracelet that tells the police where they are. For instance, if you are caught driving after having to much alcohol to drink you may have a curfew of 8:00 and you have to wear a traceable bracelet so the police will know if you are home or not. It's nice to know you are not lurking about with dodgy friends.

I started watching your channel due to your personality and outlook on things. I am here for whatever you want to share really. I thought what we got to see was interesting and you shouldn't be so down on yourself. Life happens to all of us, which includes changes in plans that are out of our control! 💙 In my sight you have nothing to profusely apologize for. Vlogging is a peek into someone else's life and, as previously stated, life tends to have it's own agenda with no regard to our own plans. I would argue with you that this was indeed a successful vlog. Regardless of it going to plan. I would be interested in looking around at other people's plants. That is what got me here in the first place after all. 😊 Cheers Jessie. As always, appreciate hearing from you and look forward to you sharing your next adventure. 💞

So glad you explained what "pinged" meant. Poor Alex! I like being by myself a lot, so lockdown hasn't been bad for me. We, in CA have had continuous lockdown, basically since Mar or Apr of 2020. They've lifted it somewhat, but then the infection rate is rising again so we're back to wearing masks and being pretty cautious when we go out. Good to have a garden and a feisty red hen, though. Don't worry about the video. I'm sure that anyone who watches you on a regular basis find you, your mom and your garden entertaining enough. If you want to file "on he go", how about doing it first and then talking about it. That way, your viewers would never think they missed out on anything....they haven't .

so impressive and so amazing how different People have different ways and methods of Growing.. all very Fascinating Indeed.. for me a seriously Novice Amateur i have learned so much.. He had some sense having a drink in a Pub and knowin u could get pinged.. not the most intelligence of planning.. also not fair on you as time always costs money plus effort.. in Future any Planning dont use your phone.. sounds a Knitemare!.. Phone.. Pub.. Pinged.. that should tell you everything in what we are dealing with..

Regardless of what happened, you still made a lovely vlog to share 💚 And I am suffering from major fruit cage envy!! I even took screenshots to attempt to replicate 😂 Fruit cages are not common here in the middle of the east coast US-I’ve just been using netting over the fruit as they ripen, moving from plant type to plant type as necessary. A large cage would save me SO much time 👍

I'm watching from Surrey, British Columbia. Very interesting what you have growing there. How big are these allotments? Over here any of the ones I've seen on your channel would be at least 10 allotments here. You have more going on than I have in my back yard. BTW, would love to have some of your rain. At present we are over 30 days without any rain and you may have heard about the heat wave we had here a couple of weeks ago.
@JessieatPlot37
@JessieatPlot37 3 года назад
Hi Garry, standard allotment size is around 250sqm so... around 2.7k sqft. Over the years many have been halved though do to people not being able to look after them and the high demand! Ah yeah... 30 days without rain was like our April but it was freezing cold rather than a heatwave. The weather is all over the place this year!

I had to destroy all my outside tomatoes and some of my potatoes. Have you any advice on how to cope with this ( I don't mean psychologically. ha ha)problem. I've been told that its due to weather conditions. Regards T P.s. Im based in the south East of Kent.
