Having a look at what’s in the wildlife pond on the allotment. Over the last few years we have really been trying to focus more on encouraging a wide variety of insects onto our plot to help with pollination and the control of other pests. Beneficial insects can come in many forms but one of the most useful are the predators who will eat all the black fly and other aphids and all sorts of other pests with out you having to do anything!
Obviously having lots of open flowers and food sources helps but also adding a constant body of water, however small to you space can make a huge difference to the biodiversity of an area.
From frogs and newts, to places for the bees to get a drink, its all so important!
I can spend hours staring into this pool of water looking at all the different things that are moving around in there and buzzing over the top. This is video is an attempt to share that feeling i get from staring into it. SlowTV, meditation, mindfulness... just watching nature.
The pond is about 6ft wide, round and about 70cm deep in its centre. It has a shelf for plants to establish on and a rubble slope to allow creatures who might fall in to get out again. The plants are a mixture of flowers and oxygenators.
The plants in my pond are :
Flowering Rush - amzn.to/3hCLbT3
Marsh Marigold amzn.to/3xJYK91
Flag Iris amzn.to/3epxNzA
Water Mares Tail amzn.to/3z2Yz92
Hornwort
Curl weed
I'm not sure which waterlily i have, it was labelled 'Pink'... not very helpful. But the below shop has a huge range of stunning ones and all sorts of other wonderful pond plants. There are a few on my wish list!!
Great shop for Pond Plants: amzn.to/3ib4FNL

Beautiful pond ♥️... if you get a bundle of barley straw in a net or 2 or 3 for a bigger pond and submerge that it will clear the blanket weed as it rots the gas it let's off kills it off.. a natural way to do it. ..it's brilliant and works well in my pond and water gardens...also as your lilly grows the increased surface cover will stop the blanket weed being so bad.. it's direct sunlight that causes it.. try getting some frog bit too as it's a native pond plant and will cover the surface too.. water soldiers are also fun to have in ponds.. they sink in the winter and come back to the top in warmer weather.. again native to UK 🙂

Great vlog so much life in the pond. We’re not allowed ponds at our allotment but I recently spotted birds drinking and splashing in puddles on plastic we’d used to cover a bed. I felt I could sort something better so have a ‘bird bath’ just a shallow seed tray which will hopefully help the wildlife and the birds too. Just a little water and some stone with some creeping Jenny plant which I didn’t realise would work there.

Barley straw will help with the blanket weed and oddly enough watercress does too! I had so much in my pond someone said to get watercress rooted and just throw it in I was sceptical but hey presto it actually worked! 💚 thanks again for another beautiful video !! X

What an interesting and informative video. You have the perfect balance of an allotment. It’s not just for growing carrots and potatoes. The chicks are adorable, you look after wildlife with your wildlife pond and hedges and bushes for all types of birds. I say gold star to you and your mum. Best wishes to you both. I’m working my way through your videos and thoroughly enjoying each one.

You have algae because you don't have enough plants. more plants will outcompete the algae for nutrients. try water lettuce and papyrus. when you get too much papyrus you can sell it to shops. its a great plant.

Stunning camera work Jess. If you completely lose interest in gardening (will never happen), go straight to the BBC, they will hire you as narrator, presenter, editor and camera operator! But, selfishly, we want you to stay right where you are, at the pond/plot with mum and Lily educating and entertaining us. Amazing video, just absolutely mesmerizing. An idea for the back fence - plunk down sweet peas next spring, or even sugar snap peas, they have such wonderful colorful blooms and grow like weeds. That’s should provide quick, easy screening. I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t get a backward walking or swimming newt this time. Haha. Seriously, you’ve outdone yourself on this one Jess, well done! ♥️

A fantastic pond Jessie and beautiful plants. The allotment is going to benefit because predators of pests will inhabit it and that helps reduce or control them ( you won't get rid of the pests because if you completely did that there's no reason for the predators to inhabit the pond) . Stay safe and keep well and happy gardening.

Hi Jessie your pond looks lovely , love the plants and wildlife, the duck weed can be a problem by blocking out the light, I use a sieve to remove most of it , and the blanket weed I use a cane to put it in and twisted it around it and leave it on the side so eney creates can go back in the pond ( you have done a lovely job ) take care be safe 🍓🍓

Lovely video Jessie. Last year I cleaned out my 30 year old pond to put a new liner in it. Took out several barrow loads of sludge and put most of it on the brassica bed - fabulous cabbages this year. We don't have a heron problem but the seagulls go for the newts so have had to net it.
