We charge a solid price per foot charge for most homes. With my 30 years of experience I would say major differences in price would be the type of gutter hanger required. Other things that may cost extra would be rotted wood or an existing gutter guard system that will take extra time to remove. Other things may come up in the process of the installation unbeknown at the time of the estimate. 6 inch gutters are not recommended for most residential homes that were designed for 5 inch gutters. some companies are fearing homeowners into larger gutters when a simple increase in the size of the downspout is all that's needed Experience Matters.

Great comment. Obviously from experience. What makes the determination of 5" 6" or 7" and what is the upgrade of downspout size to handle more water? TIA

There needs to be more gutter companies like you and I.. I’m a gutter contractor and I agree.. There are too many “idiots” with a truck and gutter trailer that think it’s best to “low ball” every job or have a flat rate to make money and not think about the industry as a whole and be and sell your company as skilled trade or professional..

I've been hanging gutters for 35 years and I can walk up to a house and take a look at it and give a price per foot for the house.... it's not that sophisticated and you don't need to have a master's degree to figure it out. Im trying to get a range, in 2021, of cost to at least know what needs to be saved. Im only needing gutters and not down spouts as I will be installing a rain catch system on each end myself. I figured at minimum 1000$ but your input would help tremendously and be very appreciated. Im in Kentucky

I don't know nothing about gutters but watching at your videos now I'm wondering where to start there's any classes available or should I just go to and work with somebody to learn the job? What would you recommend? Thank you and keep it up with the work guys👍😁

Hey Roy, thanks for commenting. I don't know of any classes or training available other than working for a company or buying a brothers franchise. There are plenty of classes, seminars and books for people in the trades however. Here are a few of my thoughts though: The gutter business can be very rewarding at a variety of different business models. I know some owner/operators that make great money, but spend all their time on a truck. This is a business model that is very attractive to someone who wants to work outside and own their business, and could be the right decision for you. Where it becomes challenging is as the owner/operator gets older or wants to have more time the entire business depends on him. I believe everyone that starts a business eventually wants both money and time. We are all willing to sacrifice both in the beginning to get things going, but many of us end up short on either time, money or both in this game. The only way to get both time and money I have found is to build a bigger company that can run without you wearing all the hats. That last sentence took us the better part of a decade to figure out and build and by no means is easy especially when trying to figure out on your own. Hopefully I answered your questions and I wish you the very best in your pursuit for a fulfilling career!

a properly installed 5in gutter will carry as much water as a 6in. esp if a leaf protection is used such as shur flow or leaf guard because you are no longer moving debris just water. the biggest thing is downspout size! 2x3 are just to small in the elbows going with a 3x4 will allow most debris to flush out. 2x3 is old tech. as well as hand made miters which leak after one season. miter boxes are the way to go as they are less labor to install and take half the time to install. just my thoughts as a gutter company owner and installer.

"Leaf protection" doesn't work!! And when they fail---oooh what an expense! You gotta take off the so-called leaf protection, clean out the gutters, and then re-install the lousy leaf protection system to the house. The reason God gave you two hands was to hold a 5 gallon bucket in one while you scoop out the leaves from the gutter and deposit them in the bucket with the other. More money has been made by leaf protection salesman than by snake oil salesman.

Being the lowest price is not always the best place to be. Most people automatically discard the lowest and highest quote. Being in the middle to higher on your quote and selling your companies quality and reputation will increase your profits and your client base. Always remember you are in the people business not the gutter business. This is true for all. Those who do not comprehend this will always be struggling and rarely will they know why. The lowest bid can never be a successful business model because you will not be in business.

Hello I personally charge $3.50 for 5" & $4.50 for 6". I work as a subcontractor for a company, now a question for the bothers, are my prices decent for the costumes ? I live in NOVA.
@TheBrothersThatJustDoGutters
@TheBrothersThatJustDoGutters 4 года назад
Great Question! Without trying to be too long winded, the short answer is no. You cannot build a client facing gutter business at subcontractor pricing. As a subcontractor you are saving money by not having to acquire the client yourself. The person/ company subbing to you has done all the heavy lifting of advertising, meeting with the client... convincing them they are the best fit... Now all you have to do is show up and do a good job(I'm over simplifying). The contractor however is going to mark up your pricing by about 50% in most cases. So if you are charging them $4, they will turn around and charge the client $8. If you are planning on targeting homeowners that price will not be enough to cover the overhead of getting in front of homeowners and converting them to clients. It costs a great deal to advertise, have a customer call you, drive out to their house and sell the job, install the job... Without knowing much about your business goals/ overhead or area you service, my educated guess is that you should be somewhere around 6 & 7 dollars per foot for homeowners.

Sorry you find it confusing. We find it hard to just say a "per foot" price in a video that will be viewed for years to come, especially considering the variables that go into each job. @rogerbraasch5224 5 лет назад
Its possible that various contractors would know what the norm is for the price per foot. After all, they have to know these things when they prepare written estimates to customers. I would expect this cost per foot to increase over time with the increase of inflation.

@TheBrothersThatJustDoGutters
@TheBrothersThatJustDoGutters 4 года назад
If you are in business, who else do you pass costs along to other than the customer? However, if you are in business you should only pass along costs that benefit the client. We have surveyed thousands of clients throughout the years and they all tell us what they want, by telling us what they appreciate, as well as the questions they ask. When they say, "you're the only one that answered the phone," "You're the only one that offered a bigger gutter," "Can I have a copy of your insurance?..." Clients love to talk to someone when they call, so that costs us money to have someone answer that phone and eventually an office where these people work. When they need a bigger gutter to solve their water volume issue, we have to purchase another machine, when they ask for our insurance, we actually have to have it... It's not just about the cost of material. It's about the clients experience, and taking personal responsibility to provide them with the best solution for their needs . It costs money to run an actual business, attract and retain good employees, offer them benefits and keep them safe and insured... It costs money to actually provide clients the level of service and quality they desire and deserve. The lower someones price, the more of these items they simply cannot afford to offer.

Ryan Parsons simple math [y(6x6)]/[y(5x5)]=36y/25y = 36/25 = 1.44, the gutters are nearly square with the exception of the small loss (value ‘y’ in equation) due to the ‘k’ side which is the approximately same percentage loss from square from both a 5” and 6” gutter. Au contraire, my dear Lawrence. A one foot linear section of 5" gutter will hold 1.2 gallons of water, while a 6" section will hold 2 gallons per linear foot. That's 60% more volume. Your simple calculation is way off. The dimensions of a 5" gutter are 5" wide at the top, 3.82 inches high on the back, and only 3.25 inches wide at the bottom channel. Hey Juan, why you hating? Make your own video with your price list if you don't like mine. But since you commented here's my response: When making a RU-vid video we have to assume that people are going to stumble upon it for years to come, so giving a flat per foot price does not make sense for this reason alone. We also change our pricing throughout the year depending on seasonality and other factors and have multiple locations all charging different prices in different parts of the country. We actually use a profit margin calculator to ensure we make the same gross profit on every job, whether a gutter cleaning or copper installation. Per foot pricing does not scale well. You wouldn't charge the same per foot price on a condo complex as you would on a 3,000sq foot house would you? Per foot pricing only works if you do the same type of house, day in and day out. We don't. Doesn't a job that requires a 40' ladder, roof straps and is located far away from your shop take longer to do? Why would you charge the same price as the job that is new construction and next to your shop, 10' off the ground? So with all the variables mentioned and not mentioned we felt it was better to give a range.
