Abba Mahari was Moses to Ethiopia's Beta Israeli community. Right up until he wasn't.
For this, and the following three videos, much of our footage from this section was unfortunately lost. Trust me, I'm more annoyed about it than you are. Luckily, the ship righted itself fairly quickly after this point, but if they're feeling a tiny bit sparse, that's why. Honestly, I doubt on your end it will even be particularly noticeable, but I felt like mentioning it anyway.
Also, even though I know it won't help to say it: Please don't make pointless political comments about Israel or your personal hatreds. This isn't the place for it and I'm tired of cleaning it up.

Polistiren you *completely* misunderstood his application of the term "European God," which he uses to illustrate a distinction between the Middle Eastern/African and European cultures surrounding God. I'm a little confused: Christianity has been a big thing in Ethiopia since the first century, said to be brought by Jesus' disciple Phillip. While the Europeans did bring their form of religion to Africa in the 19th Century, Ethiopian christianity was already entrenched. p.s. I do know a Sudanese Canadian who left Sudan after being somewhat unknowingly involved in the Fulasha airlift of the early '80s. The stories he has!
@eliran9231
@eliran9231 5 лет назад
But ethiopia's form of christianity was coptic, while the missionaries were protestants. actually, there were tries to convert the Christian coptic ethiopians to Catholic Christianity by Portuguese missionaries in the 16th and 17th centuries, but it ended in a failures and rebellions.

It's unfortunate that desperate people will often look for a "Moses" and end up following someone who is anyone but. It's hard to know if Abba Mahari actually believed he had the power, or just ran into the one thing he couldn't finesse in the form of a river, but the result is still the same. Unfortunately for the Falasha, by the time some made it to Israel, they found it wasn't the earthly paradise they had hoped for. Some of the more right wing in Israel were unwelcoming, to put it mildly. The problem, as always, is not because of people being fundamentally bad or even fundamentally good but being fundamentally people. As Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman wrote about the human race in the the novel "Good Omens" And just when you'd think they were more malignant than ever Hell could be, they could occasionally show more grace than Heaven ever dreamed of. Often the same individual was involved. It was this free-will thing, of course. It was a bugger."

Many of the big rabbis in Israel are still unwelcoming. Kosher Wineries can't employ Ethiopian Jews because the racist rabbinate-approved kosher inspectors will not approve of that - to them, that's a non Jew being involved in the making of wine (which is racist to begin with regardless of who's included in the group or not)

Despite resistance of a few very ugly idiots, life in Israel for Ethiopian Jews is way better than life in Ethiopia. After a period of initial distrust with which all immigrants are met, overwhelming majority of Israelis have welcomed them. The problems they face are connected to low education and high unemployment.

Bless their hearts. It's terribly, terribly sad that so many people around the world are outcasts in their own countries. I have no trouble with religious belief - just those who take advantage of it or believe theirs is the only one that matters.

I love this channel because you may have your bias as we all have, but you always show two sides of the coin. If I was to stumble across this story by myself I’d find it simply something that makes fun of the church in a way, but then you go on to say how people put their faith in lunatics because they want to be who they are and they have nowhere else to turn. It really puts things into perspective when you sit down and think. Thank you.

Maybe they think cats are lion cubs and leave them alone just in case daddy is nearby. Or maybe I just took The Lion King too seriously.

This might seem a bit stupid but... Were they all just defeated after a river? Like they couldn't find a bridge or make some rafts? I mean like they sacrificed so much and its not like there weren't enough people to at least come up with something first before resorting to miracles.

To be fair, having never left their villages, most or all of them had probably never seen that much water or a wide river. And, they were exhausted.

Local gang trying to extort money for us to film the graveyard. Me being stubborn because that's how one gets through filming in Ethiopia. There are virtually no local Jewish Ethiopians left. Those are all just hustlers looking for tourists.
