I don't think player elimination is an inherently bad mechanic, but rather should only be used in games that take max 15 or so minutes to play, preferably less. That way people are only sitting around for a few minutes and can still be enthralled in the fast paced action of the game before shuffling up and starting again
@EightThreeEight

Secret Hitler only eliminates a couple of people in the last few turns, and those eliminated players can still win if the rest of their team wins.
@rapidreaders7741
@rapidreaders7741 Год назад
There are also games like Blood on the Clocktower where even after a player is "eliminated", they can still influence the game's outcome from beyond the grave.

Appreciate this. Having fairly recently gotten into modern board games I now find myself often explaining the concept of modern/Euro-style games to people who think the classics we grew up with are still the prevalent style of game. Was looking for a good way or video to explain it and this will be my go-to for that purpose!

Also iI want to say, Eurogames usualy have indirect, isntead of direct player interaction, not no interaction at all, and have less/minimal randomness, not no Randomness. ALSO also most eurogames have actually less and very very focused and streamled Rules, isntead of heavy, thematic rules.

Yeah this video is actually full of oversimplifications if not outright factual errors like claiming TTR is American when Alan Moon is actually English. The only thing American about TTR is that the publisher Days of Wonder was founded by French expats in California before moving operations to France.

I'm really hoping that Dice Hate Me games gets out of their funk - they were initially set up with the idea of euro style games with more interesting themes, so Compounded for example does a lot of the same things as Catan (but without the annoying effect of the robber forcing players to go turns without getting resources). Great Heartland Hauling Co is an excellent intro to the pick up and deliver genre. Brew Crafters looks like something much more interesting than the farming of Caverna/Agricola. Favourite Euros: -Compounded -Suburbia -Dice Hospital -Pandemic In general though, I want games with a much stronger narrative feel like Dead Of Winter, things that me think about things from a different perspective while Euros tend to be dressed up abstracts

There’s always going to be a trade off when luck is added or taken away from a game. I find ticket to ride rather fun because I feel it has the proper mixture of luck and strategy. You can get lucky in getting the train colors you need which is very helpful for a new player And I love the change in momentum when everyone realizes their plan abs you get a whole turn of everyone drawing a card and it just feels like everyone especially the new players Got it. I never feel bored with it though Or that my strategy is useless, like sorry. I can play it several times and be intrigued by each new game. Luck based games do have their place, I remember playing sorry and candy land as a child, but I also don’t play them anymore. Finding a way to remove luck without disadvantaging new or non strategic players should be a goal in game design.

I always think of Diplomacy when people complain about losing from the start of the game. I think Diplomacy is clever, because yes, “the ones who can win” will be decided the first turn. There’s theoretically no luck, although playing against people who hate you is bad luck. But you don’t have to win in Diplomacy. You can keep losing the whole game while trying to “lose less”. If you roleplay the thing, just assume you’re responsible for your own country and you don’t want to lose more territory. Deciding the player(s) you want to side with is more important than winning, you want safety and you want reasonable requests for that guaranteed safety. There are an infinite number of ways you can play as a “losing” player, but you never get bored (unlike Risk, lol).
@jacopovilla1590
@jacopovilla1590 3 года назад
Another consideration: my background is mostly videogames, and I always found odd how board game enthusiasts blame luck for deciding who’s the clear winner. In a parallel with, let’s say, racing videogames, something with a lot of randomness and chaos like Mario Kart represent the “casual” side of them, you can get first and get annihilated by random items thrown at you by the “bad” players behind you (interaction; chance). This is a specific game design choice, it’s a family game. I wouldn’t play something like Forza Motorsport with someone who never played it, because unlike Mario Kart there’s no randomness, no interaction, the most experienced player wins and that’s it. 🤷‍♀️

Just because something is new, doesnt make it better. It makes it different. Just because something is old, doesnt make it trash, it makes it different. If you suck at one kind of game, you will like new or different games you are good at. For me, "American" style games and "Euro" games are just two different styles of game that provide one outcome: fun. I can like Star Wars and Star Trek at the same time. I do not have to choose between them.

Awesome video. But I don't think the dice thing is on the market with Euros nowadays. Dice drafting has seen a renaissance these last few years. Teotihuacan helping to lead the charge and now we got tons of games using dice in creative , balanced ways. If I was to say a definition for Euro, it's not a lack of luck, but that luck can be managed and mitigated. GLoomhaven has euro mechanics, but the sheer randomness of monsters and no actual deck building mechanics makes it firmly out. I feel like engaging more modern euro games would change this video a bit. The modern euro feels like Euro/American Hybrids. I mentioned Teotihuacan and its use of dice. But you also have games like Near and Far, that has a fantastic worker placement element but weaved in a narative story that's highly interactive.

Also, hand management can be traced farther back, specifically to trick-taking games. >> 9:52 Rather like asking if it matters what genre we describe a song or a film as. >> 12:40 Was Cluedo really the best you could come up with for a "thematic dice-chucking game?"

❤ Thank you for thoroughly distilling exactly why I avoid Euro games like the plague. They’re not so much games but rather tedious work assignments DISGUISED as games. They’re a vehicle for left-brained players to feel like they’re playing a game as they put on a solo exhibition of their independent math skills. They pack all of the excitement and interaction of watching your quiet smart dad put together a circuit board for a remote control. Sure, it’s satisfying to watch it all come together as your German dad can finally turn on the TV at the end. But this little exercise has all been about him showing off his aptitude and teaching. Maybe he can invite over OTHER dads on the spectrum next time and they can compete to see who can put together the remote fastest or with the least amount of circuits. Or MAYBE, we can all play an ACTUAL game, and just humor dad every once in a while.

I am wondering if you really understand what these "eurogames" are, since there are so many... just flat out wrong statements. Most "eurogames" have player interaction. It might not be direct, but there is always indirect interaction. No game is one where players have 0 interaction. Take Catan, which started this all. It has shit ton of player interactions. You can actively block your opponents moves, you trade with your mates, you discuss actions, you can move the robber... there is a lot of interaction. Just because these games focus less on "directly attack opponent" does not mean there aren't any. Other is argument about luck, a lot of eurogames incorporate luck as stalemate breaker or something that shakes up the board EXACTLY to avoid "okay, this guy won already". Eurogames want everyone to be on board and have chance to win. Eurogames also take away a lot of "bullshit luck", AKA "I did everything correctly but I lost because the dice were not with me". With Eurogames, you can (usually) point to moment where if you had taken other decision you could have come on top.
