To be fair the "unauthorised recording of the Great Lake's rules" being one of U Corp's taboos makes a lot more sense if you look at the word "unauthorised", you *can* have the rules written down but only if you (presumably) pay U Corp to get permission first

one thing that i think many people forget is that dante doesn't have memories, he knows general facts, words and how to exist, but he has no experiences that he can use to properly lead the sinners. The reason he isnt doing much is because while he is supposed to lead the sinners he doesn't know how. Dante knows how to lead them in battle (which is the orders he has been giving) but he hasn't gained any life experiences that would allow him to lead them personally. It is this lack of knowledge about what to do which makes him so passive.

I'm glad PM has the balls to let their characters be unlikeable, be it both temporarily or permanently. So many stories play the sympathy card, or force charm into every single character to the point where you feel like you're not allowed to just hate someone. A PM story gives you the magnificent bastards, the outright monsters, the controversial people with horrible traits, and don't just kill all of them off as soon as they're introduced cause they're "problematic". Some have won, gotten away, and while others still change in noticeable ways at the end of their arcs, it doesn't outright erase what they were before. It's refreshing.

Personally I never took Ishmael attitude here as her thinking too highly of herself but more so she's frustrated and traumatized by how deadly and arbitrary the Lakes are. To her, this is a place where people live and die because of a single mistake and sometimes they don't even need to make the mistake. Yet despite the danger, here she is traveling with a group of idiots doing the equivalent of walking into a minefield and saying "Hey this is a great place to play some football! there are even the neat little metal things laying around to use as balls!" She's not being arrogant. She's just frustrated, pure simple frustration. And while yes she could explain everything (a tall order even in the best of times) the fact that she's likely in the middle of a complete emotional and mental breakdown is hampering her ability to say "Those metal things are mines don't kick them, that grass poisonous don't play in it, That alligator over there is currently eating Don while you all weren't looking. But all this is meaningless because Hong Lu looked at that colorful cloud for too long and that means we just broke one of the lake's stupid laws and this entire area is going to be pulled underwater in about 5 minutes! So we got lucky there...." (lets not forget that she explicitly warned everyone, "Lets NOT do this, you all are NOT READY!!!" and was, from her perspective, explicitly told "Shut up! We're doing it anyway.") So in conclusions I think your comments of her arrogance are just wrong... I agree that she does have a low opinion of the others but its not because of a high opinion of herself, its because she doesn't want to see her friends permanently killed/broken by a place that regularly and trivially kills and breaks people.

Ah, you missed the debuff that Ishmael has right now. Every fight in this Canto she starts off with 'Compulsion,' which has her start every encounter with -25 SP. It gives some insight into her behaviour; you're currently going through the story with a Sinner who has mentally degraded.

I'm not sure Ishmael thinks highly of herself, more so she's just fed up with the group fucking up; along with her anxiety of what they'll potentially have to deal with on the Lake.

Ishmael can get MEAN. I think at this point in the story she is meant to be pretty unlikable

I hope any elitist "oh you got off easy, this fight was nerfed, it isn't much of a challenge now, you got off easy." type comments don't get too obnoxious. That is, if some do appear; big clarification there.

I can see Foreman really pushing himself to give Ishmael breathing room for her attitude. It’s important to remember that right now, and this will be true for all the sinners, we are seeing them at their absolute worse, at a moment where they’re dawning on the realisation that they have to confront their greatest fears/disappointments/letdowns/etc. It’s fair to think that Ishmael is out of line because she IS out of line, but this is her at the bottom of her barrel.

tbh, when I went through this canto I wasn't going "oh my god ishmael is so cool and right" I went "oh my god I want ishmael to do that to me, she is so cool and hot."

Have you ever been in a situation where you are so high on frustration and emotions that nothing comes out when you talk? There is so much thoughts and details whirling inside your head that it’s difficult to elaborate them. For this instance, the Great Lake is an inhospitable place with too many various taboos and rules to follow. Breaking any minute or obscure rule could spell disaster. Ishmael knows this, but due to her past trauma mixed with her current emotions, it could be hard for her to open up.

Im not going to repeat what the other guy said about why Ishy is not arrogant, just immensely frustrated and a fair bit traumatized, and instead address your plea to like her. I think you should see Ishy's actions as a consequence of her compulsion to do things perfect and competently instead of her thinking she is way better than others. Yes, she should say things sooner, she is to blame for that and should speak and explain instead of going into a silent tantrum. However, let me clarify she really never was shown to think herself above other sinners, just that she gets crisped when someone is incompetent when she is trying so hard (and failing sometimes, especially given her silence this Canto so far) to be competent. I think that of you see Ishy through that lens instead of mistakenly seeing her as a woman who thinks she is miss perfect you will have a better time, and perhaps actually enjoy her. But if you dont, it is quite alright too.

Oh something I didn't notice when I was playing that was definitely intentional from the writers was the contrasts in leadership styles between Ishmael, Outis and Dante.

While i personally greatly enjoy Ishmael's character, and i understand why you don't, i think you're misinterpreting her actions a little, Manager Esquire. It's not that she sees herself as so much better and everyone else as beneath her, she's basically the only straight man in a group full of incompetent lunatics, and she's been repeatedly proven right in her view of The Team. She has absolutely no reason to trust any of them to not screw up in some way, and when it's about something as important to her as this, she's not going to give them the chance to screw it up again, which in my eyes, is entirely understandable given their track record. But again, i understand where you're coming from, and you're probably not going to start liking Ishmael any more than you do until the very end of the Canto, but just remember that there's a very good reason Ishmael has so many fans and why many considered Canto 5 some of PM's best writing until Canto 6, so don't worry. Now back to my usual Timestamp replies, i hope i didn't come of as too preachy Manager Esquire, i respect your opinion, and am interested to see if it changes by the end of the Canto. 45:40 this scene is most likely a reference to the greek myth of The Symplegades or Cyanean Rocks, which would clash together and crush any ship that tried to sail between them. They where eventually "defeated" by Jason and The Argonauts, who only lost the tail end of their boat (same as the Busboat), after which the rocks never moved again. 1:18:44 As i said above, we don't think the way she's acting is "cool", we love it because of how well written of a self-destructive downward spiral it is, how her anxiety and obsession are making her become her worst possible self while we can only helplessly watch it happen. It's a perfect example of what unchecked trauma and obsession can do to a person, where you see those around you not as people, but as either stepping stones or obstacles to your goal, to the goal you HAVE TO accomplish no matter what it takes or what you have to destroy. Again, i hope my comments on Ishmael aren't too preachy Manager Esquire, i know i can be a bit overzealous at time when talking about things I'm passionate about, but I'm very excited to watch you experience the rest of this Canto.

Hello Foreman. I just remind you that if you complete Canto 5 fast enough, that you can do railway refraction 3. You will have at least 8 weeks (Assuming two weeks for mirror dungeon updates, two weeks for Walpurgisnacht, and four weeks for the first 6.5 event (This does not count extra "dead" weeks between these events since they can be variable, so you have more time then that)). You should probably be able to beat canto 5 in this time frame. I would also expect railway 3 to have 2 episodes worth of content. The fights should be not be too hard, especially since you no longer have an extra incentive to beat it in under 100 turns (Not that achieving a sub-100 on a blind play-through is impossible either).

Don't worry foraman, the nerfs were honestly pretty mild compared to the ones they did in ruina, with some of them basically being the same

I have been watching this series for a bit and only now caught up to it, good job on everything so far, i genuinely think you are a good player and this chapter will give you no trouble besides maybe the very end Sorry but i will now proceed to try to defend Ishmael a bit: Ishmael is supposed to be at her most unlikeable at the moment, even (most of) her fans won't deny My main disagreement would be 1:26:56 due to the fact that she isn't a downer as much as she tries to be the voice of reason of the group and that can get frustating very fast when you have to deal with a party with multiple murd*rhobos and people that are completely passive 90% of the time, she is the most "normal" sinner which is why she was so disappointed by Dante during Canto II, she expected a good leader that was at least capable of not constantly fucking up, even then she still took bullets for Dante and always tried to help as much as possible and she is one of the few sinners to actively be helpful to Dante I can't guarantee that you will do a 180 and suddenly start liking her afterwards but i personally enjoyed her characterisation a lot and i think all her actions due lead to somewhere, if that final destination will be enjoyable to you... i have no idea Please don't take this as me hating on your criticisms or anything like that, i just wanted to give my own opinion since i barely discuss with other people about this game and this Canto made me cry a ton during the entire ending sequence You saying you wish Ishmael was more like her Captain ID is............. very funny Hope you have a fun experience with Canto V🎉

Well, its your opinion, my dude. I will just say that, Ishmael is not acting like a know it all like Faust. The problem with Ishmael is that, she doesn't trust any of the Sinners, time and time again they have made various blunders. The Sinners don't read the pamphlets guides for each Nest, the Sinners time and time again fail to comply to simple orders. Ishmael simply lost any semblance of trust to any of them. She is basing off experience from the 4 Cantos we did, that none of the Sinners are dependable, and this Canto is a pivotal point in her journey, all kinds of emotions are brewing in her like a storm and she sees no dependable person within the group.

Foreman was so blinded by his obsessive hate of Ishmael he didn't notice her new status effect lol (or maybe he did and just didn't say anything, idk just wanted to make the pun)

As much as beating a canto before it's nerf is a flex. That doesn't really stop a canto from having parts that will kick your ass for not reading.

I know this was 2 months ago, and I'm quite far from catching up to this playthrough, but honestly Everyone suddenly forgets the idea that a person can enjoy a fictional story without every character being a "favorite" doesnt matter the fact that he doesnt like ishmael or doesnt enjoy some of the other sinners as much as certain ones But we all have our favorites Personally, i adore every sinner, but to each their own The fact that he's enjoying the story nevertheless is still a positive thing in my eyes!

I like the electric scream EGOs, they do really well with the middle ID's, turning those into charge ID's with another nuke in their arsenal

To be fair, I was just as frustrated with Yi Sang during Canto IV (and even before) as you are with Ishmael during this Canto. I though Yi Sang just thought his self wallowing / self pitying was more important than everyone else, and was very annoyed when he seemed to know a lot that could have been helping during Canto IV, but chose to keep everything to himself because we weren't worth an explanation. It didn't help that, on a surface level, the league of 9 flashback looked like Yi Sang was too busy admiring himself in the mirror while everything around him was falling apart. Obviously I was wrong about Yi Sang, and he's a true cinnamon roll. That being said, Ishmael is truly unsufferable since Canto IV.5 so I completely understand the frustration, that's entirely deserved.

a good support passive for the Liu team is The one who grips Faust, while on the bench she heals 15 sp on 3 lust reason, since all Liu members have lust it's pretty handy as a way to bump sanity (or hold Sinclair from corroding)

Faust tier about to become Fish tier. I personally never thought Ishmael thought she was better than everyone, to me she always came as someone who is very impatient and that translated to have no patience for the Sinners' fuck ups. Which they do a lot to be honest. Now, to be fair, the story abuses too much of the "I'm not telling you this piece of information to make things more impactful" which ends up hurting characters like Faust and Ishmael. But hey, you can't like everyone.

My interpretation of Ismael's behavior in the first half of the canto is that of someone who feels frustrated, thinking that they have no one else to rely on but themselves + Has something she wants to achieve (Which is kinda already implied to be vengeance-based). So it's not that she thinks highly of herself, but that she *distrusts* everyone else and refuses to communicate (Classic relationship issue if I have to say so myself). Kind of similar to how childish Angela acts across the majority of Ruina thinking that no one understands her pain and stuff. So yeah, basically she's just being childish and irrational due to an emotional turmoil here. Not that it excuses her behavior of treating her teammate badly though, just considering it as a screw loss she always has.

Funny your opinions on Ishmael up to this point mirror a lot of my own. I would only add that I felt at the time, she was more pissed off at how casual the others are about a situation she sees as very serious, and that warped her better judgement. Certainly though, her doubling down on her usual schtick isn't at all productive, but it felt like an expected response imo. Anyway, have no fear of having your own opinions. It's always interesting to note others' in these cases, and I'm looking forward to seeing your thoughts on the rest of the story. Thanks for the video. As always, very entertaining.

Tbf at this point you have to overlook the fact that no one is ever going to tell you what you are getting into before hand. They cant surprise the player if you were always told first. I dont think to this day any of them tell you what is going on until it happens

I believe Ishmael's behavior in this canto is meant to come across as abrasive and unlikable. So you're not the only one that feels that way. In the earlier Cantos, Ishmael at least held back her more conflictive personality traits for the sake of the team. Now? Not so much.

its okay if you dont like her!!! i loved her so much since day 1 of the games release so even though im omega fucking biased, she did still grate me a bit at this part. like a d&d character who doesnt want to cooperate but my god is the payoff worth it. so, so worth it keep your eyes buttered till the end

I'm surprised people had any issues with the C6 part 3 bosses that needed them to be nerfed. They felt challenging for me but I still got most of them first try. Only the final boss took more attempts and mostly because a certain staggered phase still managed to stagger most of my party because the Thorns they weren't supposed to have when staggered, they had. This was using the Liu team with R corp Heath and Magic Bullet Outis over Hong Lu and Gregor.

Ishmaels personality in this canto is obviously a bad thing. That's why this is her canto where she has to change

Part of Ishmael's issues, unironically, is her obsession with getting things done. she doesn't care about who she insults or what she steps over, it's all about solving the one goal she cares about.

At 1:10:52 some part of that may be true about Ishmael showing off, but I think there's also a bit of truth to the idea that "actions speak louder than words". So while she may be showing off, I think Ishmael also doesn't believe simply "telling" Dante will work, because she doesn't trust them.

I am an episode late. Again. I think school and stuff has been kicking my ass because normally I'm more on top of these ID reviews... Lobotomy Corporation Remnant Faust: A rather speedy Rupture-Poise based Identity for Faust. There isn't much special about her, mechanics wise, and her clashing is fine enough on her first two skills. At Uptie 4, her S1 rolls an 11 and her S2 rolls a 14, which are both average for their type. The real standout is her S3, which gets +3 Coin Power if she hasn't been hurt. Assuming you fulfil this frankly very easy condition, her S3's value turns into 26, which outstrips most 000 IDs. It is ridiculously good, and the damage it inflicts is nothing to scoff at either.

The best way to describe Ishmael this chapter is that she views the other Sinners at this point, especially Dante, with contempt. As you pointed out, even with reason, he's been a pretty lousy leader. She doesn't trust them, and typically begrudging people don't solicitate people they hold in contempt. Which of course, doesn't do a lot to help anyone here lol. A LOT of people found Ishmael insufferable this Canto, which fits cause she's absolutely being as such to the rest of the Sinners here. Outside of that I think most anyone else simply understood why she was acting that way. And yeah, when you dislike a character, or even technically just in general philosophically speaking, anything negative sticks out far more than any and everything positive, and sometimes that's just too much for people to handle and that's fair. Not everyone mixes well, nor needs to all the time after all. You don't have to like every single character in a story, and you can still enjoy a story even without that. Plenty of great stories have absolutely despised characters amongst their fanbases, yet those people still love the story they're in. Though as someone who's very spiteful and very much holds grudges, I will still put up with business because responsibilities come first. Everyone has their limits though, and people with trust issues who feel like you've irrevocably wronged them will absolutely watch you ruin yourself in spite when you've earned their ire. Especially if they're in a position to, by all means, provide assistance to those who've irked them. It's not good, by all means, but that just goes to show how much those kinds of people have their patience pushed. It's why Ishmael's my favorite of the Sinners. She's the one I can relate to the most, especially with having to deal with negligence and arrogance from people I can't distance myself from where it feels like I lose or whatever goes wrong is my fault no matter what I say or do. So why bother doing anything, right? It unfortunately tends to build a very 'scorched earth' mentality at times. I'm sure all this probably comes off prudent or like I'm 'in defense of Ishmael' here, but I mainly just want to give personal perspective as someone that likes the character mainly because of how much I feel I can relate to them compared to the rest of the cast. Not to change your opinion on her or anything with it, even if I disagree with some of the scorn you've given her, you've still got the rest of her Canto to experience after all. It's not right to judge or fully criticize someone when they've yet to finish something, it'd be unreasonable to blame someone for that kind of ignorance. And as someone who sounds like they resonate a lot with Heathcliff, I can't wait for you to reach Canto VI after this lol. Absolutely loved their setting style of 'Wuthering Heights'. Besides, if you end up hating Ishmael, hopefully plenty of other great aspects of this Canto make up for that!

I do agree with your opinion regarding Ishmael at the start of this canto, she is one of my favorite characters, but once I got to this part and she started causing problems and doing rash actions without talking to anyone about it first, it was just the worst. Granted she gets her character development and everything later, but man, at the start of this canto, I just wanted Heathcliff to whack her with his bat.

There is a conversation between Heathcliff and Ishmael near the end of the canto which really explains her abrasive attitude (not that it excuses or justifies Ishmael taking her frustrations out on her fellow Sinners), but it allows you get a more clearer idea, in retrospective, why she acts the way she does

You will know why we like her when the canto finishes

39:29 this is one of those weird City taboos that is highlighted in some of the other works like Leviathan/Distortion Detective. In context, it really isn't that unexpected. If you really think about it, it's a way of thwarting outsiders who, compared to people who have lived their entire lives in said area, absolutely don't know what they're doing. It's complicated.

While watching this I'm playing the levels you clear for the first time myself so this is my own speculation. What if the way Ishmael is acting is related to the laws of the lake. What if there are laws you can talk about much like how you can't write them down? I dunno. Just a thought I figured I'd share.

We all have our different takes and preferences about the sinners, so don't let anyone in the comments give you too hard of a time! And yeah, I do think that you having such a passionate reaction to her *is* a positive thing, I'd say it's a much more positive reaction from a storytelling perspective than just feeling lukewarm about Faust's whole thing. It's only "bad" when you dislike a character a story is really trying to make you like. Considering Ishmael *is* supposed to be frustrating as fuck to us RN, I'd say that's a win. I do, of course, also hope that the story manages to change your feelings by the end of the canto as well.

While I'm aware foreman said he doesn't want to look into the source material for any of the sinners at least until their cantos have been completed, I wonder if he knows which sinners is from which original piece of literature. I knew most before starting the game but Yi Sang (Wings), Hong Lu (Dreams of the red chamber) and Sinclair (Demian) were foreign to me at the time.

I like your commentary Foreman but what irks me the most is this part 1:14:23. You even zoomed in, looked a few seconds at Ishmael and even her sanity but you glossed over it entirely. Someone already said it but Ishmael gets a unique status effect called "Compulsion" so do give it a read next episode or maybe you cut it out so who knows.

I'm not going to try and defend Ishmael's action this early onto the canto but I will say that the journey ahead will be quite troubling with how it's starting

ok, quick note here I think you are right to dislike ishmael at this point in the story- she isn't acting rationally, despite what she wants everyone to believe. won't say anything about the rest of the canto, but I just want you to keep that in mind. she has the Compulsion debuff for a reason, after all.

Tbh Ishmael never annoyed me this canto, but mostly for ludonarrative reasons. In every dungeon coin flip sequence i would always send Ish- because she ever EVER failed- not even once. the only time up to this point i lost was when i let Sinclair sit on the spiky chair, so the game implicitly built the image of Ishmael being an unkillable determinator, living and breathing to kill 'that bastard' and being unstoppable doing so. so she was probably right in being a venomous paranoid freight train because if the sea can shape a person into can do all the bs i made her do w/o wincing, it can probably turn us into much worse than chum. TLDR: its cool how different ppls gameplay experiences shape their ishmael opinions🐟🐟🐟

The Canto VI nerfs weren't too bad anyways. Just a few fixed target attacks losing that element from what I've seen. It'll be fine. I still look forward to your reactions to it regardless, don't let the "ThIS CanTO wAs HArDeR BfORe tHE NeRfS" people bug you about it. I've noticed there's some really weird elitism in this community, across all three games to varying extents. Also, you may have noticed the art style changed for CGs this Canto! Due to some unfortunate circumstances that I won't get into, the previous artist, VellMori, left the Limbus team. They got a new artist (or possibly, brought back an old one, I can't actually find a name) and while different, I feel the art style matches Limbus VERY well. Feels like a direct upgrade from Ruina's CG artstyle. I certainly like both styles, but I think the art style shift in Canto V and beyond was VERY fitting. There's certainly some upcoming scenes I struggle to imagine in Vellmori's style.

Elitism is such a constant annoying problem in this damn community. While the blatant superiority comments are bad, it’s the clueless ones that think they’re being “clever” or “well-meaning” when comparing to their own experiences that are the most obnoxious. Neat, you did it day one. Cool, you thought it was fair and balanced. How long have you been playing? Since launch, right. How many IDs and EGO- all of them? Gotcha. At what lev- maxed everything and used a meta team? Which you used to make that statement about the fight being “fair and balanced”? Yeah. From one longtime veteran to many many others over the years, I’m kind of just sick of it.

Oh you're going to HATE Ish this chapter, I'm sure. There's a good bit of nuance as to why she is the way she is at the moment (and there's a couple hints as to what pushes those buttons early on, as in, Canto 1 and 2), but while it explains why she is how she is right now, it's not quite an excuse. That said, there is a reason, and... Let's just say that, even with your VERY impressive skill in this game (genuinely shocked how smooth sailing, pun not intended, it was) I would be very surprised if I don't see a "Defeat" pop up at least once during this Canto. Anyone in the know knows which fight I mean, and you'll know which one I mean when you fight it I'm sure.

I guess to add my own take on the difficulty,i did all parts of canto 5 and 6 pre nerf. The fights in this canto were..difficult to say the least. Ignore anyone whose like "erm you didn't beat it pre patch so ur bad." Because beating it pre nerf is essential the equivalent of the poorly drawn gold star image that says you did it. i get judging Ishmael's recent behaviour but like calling her self-righteous before is pretty stupid though?? like Sinners go into danger head on without any preparations or reasons, like is it not obvious to do stuff like read up on the place you're going to? most of the time she's been "Obnoxious and self righteous" it's been caused by people around her being total morons and failing spectacularly so i really don't see your point.

I also agree with the current Ishmael assesment, she also frustrated me mildly when playing the chapter. Like i understood that she wanted vengance and being focused on it and yada yada but there was no reason to act like the rest of the team is full of useless dullards. Or acting like her trauma is the be all end all. All of them have their own stories, its understandable they joined because they wanted their goals, their dreams fufilled, hell Yi-Sangs was the most "fir the team" mindset yet, and she digs into him throwing a hissy fit fir no reason. Just... Ugh... Frustrating...

So many bad takes wow. You blatantly ignore the stupid shit that the sinners have done that would make ANYONE not want to trust them with anything more complex than a four piece puzzle. Now imagine how much worse that is when you are dealing with trauma AND are a perfectionist. 'You're all idiots' yes THE MAJORITY OF THEM ARE. I understand your reaction to the community after library of ruina, but its getting a bit weird how you get defensive with things like the difficult or about people saying that you should read leviathan when no one is being a jerk about it, at least as far as i am aware.

Mhm i think this is the tipping point for me, your playthrough has had its ups and downs for me (as do most things) i think you have been doing really well at the game, dont let the difficulty elitist get you down they just cant read though i also do believe this *is* the canto where the game starts to have proper difficult fights. But your opinion on Ishmael is really hard to watch, not just because of how annoyed you are at her character that would be fine (though its just kind of unpleasent to watch someone who is that angry at a character) i would get it because i was annoyed at her throughout this canto too but i think your opinion on her character is really wrong and i think i have to stop watching otherwise i will not enjoy the content, i will pick this series back up once you are done with Canto 5 and i can see how your opinion on Ishmeal has changed (if at all) and see if i want to watch then. I dont want this comment to be entirely negative so i will say you are a very funny person you do enhance a lot of comedy scenes and i will miss watching those.

Maybe if you just experienced the canto and picked up the nuance of Ishmael's writing instead of yapping on end everytime she has appears on screen, you might be able to appreciate the character.
