I liked turning the Catalpa piece you gave me and it seems like you had a good time turning this one, Gary. Not difficult to turn, easy to sand and looks like an expensive wood when done. What's not to like. You did a great job with this bowl, my friend! Nice design and finish, it's a winner! 😃 Phil

Ok. River otter head (in its den) looking left at the roots in the river bank. Catalpa can be easy to turn, or completely obnoxious when over ripe. Glad you got a good piece. One of my favorite Catalpas is at a lavender farm near Sequim. Those leaves are HUGE!
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 4 месяца назад
Sounds interesting Valerie. Sadly I did not see the leaves on this on. Looked like it had been down for many years. If I could remember where I got it I would see if the tree is still there. Not all that far from me.

You just gotta love Catalpa wood. I love how it turns out and I wish I would have gotten more when I had the chance. The smell of it is kinda strange but it's beautiful whenever you can get a piece of it to agree with what you want it to look like. Happy turning my friend😊

I've never turned catalpa. It looks really cool. Nice grain patterns. You made the right decision by not filling the spot with coffee grounds--would have drawn the wrong kind of attention to it. the natural look is great.

Thank You Gary...I know zero about Catalpa wood. Watching your first cuts reminds me of Ash with a darker tone & heaver grain? That open grain looks very thirsty drinking in that sanding sealer. We have 3 large (50 foot) Catalpa trees on our property. I have turned several pieces from cutoffs and dead falls. When leaves are off during winter, the tree branches resemble something from an old Hitchcock movie. Can be creepy. BTW, ACE Hdwr stores carry the shellac sealer. Other box stores (orange, blue or green) do not.

@@ThePapa1947 My wife is in the choir as well. She sang in English, Spanish and Latin. She had a lot of practice to do as well as write a bit of music for a part of Mass. I just try to do what I could to give her time to do all this. No project work got done by me. Now, it is plant photography time for me. Who knows when I will get back in the shop for fun. Haha Have a nice Spring.

Another beautiful bowl, Gary! I'm also a big fan of the Zinsser Seal Coat, it really helps give a smoother finish to the touch, and a bit more luster as well.

Gary it looks beautiful especially the one side. The shape is very pleasing as well. Do you find wide growth rings are hard to smooth? You have a good price for Seal Coat. It’s $30 at Rockler and not sold at the Depot🤷🏻‍♂️
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 4 месяца назад
Thank you Skip. It sanded up nicely. The Depot used to have the sealer. I bought a gallon of it years ago. I will just get a quart at a time from Ace. I have another 5 dollars off LOL

You can improvise sanding sealer with a clear di.uted water based "varathane"

Beautiful! Have you made your own shellac sealer from flakes? Not hard to do.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 4 месяца назад
Hi Gary I have not and I know it is easy enough to do. Seems to be more expensive to make your own though. Do you use Everclear? Or can you use cheap vodka?
@garybeasley4885
@garybeasley4885 4 месяца назад
@@ThePapa1947 I used denatured alcohol I got from Home Depot. Use any high purity stuff you can get for a good price. Got my flakes from Rockler but you can probably get it cheaper elsewhere. The flakes dissolve quicker when the alcohol is warmed. Use a heat source thats not an open flame, heating pad, warming zone on the electric stove, even a sunny location on a window sill. One pound cut is one dry ounce of flakes to 8 ounces of alcohol.

I don't remember seeing you sand after the sanding sealer is dry, do you?
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 4 месяца назад
The plan here was to fill that crack. The sealer would have kept the CA from staining the wood. As it turned out I did not fill the void. Normally fine scotch brite between coats is all that is needed.

@@ThePapa1947 I'm blessed with a brother that is an arborist, but he lives in Utah (I'm north of Seattle). I don't get to Utah all that often, but when I do, I come back with a pickup truck full of Black Walnut, English Walnut, Locust, Russian Olive, Catalpa, Cherry and other fruit woods. Just costs me the gas to get there and back. I'm fat on English Walnut at the moment... Want some?
