Lots of problems with this one!
I debated even finishing this piece of Birch but the spalting was too much for me to resist. All in all I think it looks pretty cool. The inside not as nice as I like but it will probably have dried flowers or something in it.

Thank you very much Peter. Oh I was hanging on the edge of my lathe wondering if it was going to hang in there for me. Once I got to the bottom I could relax. The farther you reach in the bigger the chance of things going south with a sketchy tenon. But you still need to be relaxed when turning. If you too tense it is more likely something can go wrong. Thanks for watching, Gary

Where you saw the lion, I think I saw a dancing figure. And above the eyes/face, I see a bear face straight on. The spalting really makes the piece interesting, but spalting, bug tracks, and punk can be an awful lot of extra work!!! Thanks Dave!

Thank You Gary, Thank You Dave at Calmwood Creations.. WOW Gary this is VERY different. At 12:31 I agree with your "wow" cause that grain looks like it's going to offer some interesting figures! HA those wormholes were giving you problems (my way of thinking is the more wormholes the better, omg!). I know Gary this soft, punky, wormy wood was perhaps not that desirable for you BUT for me it was WONDERFUL. Watching how you had to fix the tenon and more or less baby it along to achieve a finished turning. This is one of your most entertaining turnings. LOTS OF DRAMA Gary & I love it ..... until your next adventure... TM

Thank you my friend, I was sure hoping once it got smoothed up the beauty would show. Not much we can do with worm holes other than just let them be. When it flew off I just looked at the lack of a bowl in my chuck I and had nothing to say...good thing LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thanks Gary, wow what a labour of love that was. It’s a real pain when the tenon splits right off like that. In Australia we have a timber called Gidgee, extremely dense very hard hardwood, which also often splits tenons off. You’d think I’d only use mortises on it now. Slow learner 😤😂. The spalting made this piece. Above your lion face I see a unicorn or pony at least.

Beautiful I love turning Birch but like you said it can be punky in places. One trick I have used is to create a recess tenon and use CA on the inside of the recess to harden the wood and it has worked very well for me most of the time.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 6 месяцев назад
Thank you very much Jeff. I think the CA in your recess would certainly make it stronger. What I normaly will do hot glue a tenon on the bottom. But the broken one locked itself in and the CA held good. Nice to have lots of options. Gary

I see a standing bird where you saw Spiderman. This was a lot of work but that's not news to you! It wasn't my labor but if it was, I would have to say it was worth every frustrating minute! Lots of great color and spalting. Combine that with your cool design and you have a winner! Nice finish, too. Not easy to do with all that punky spalting. Great job, Gary! 😊 Phil

I will check out the bird. Makes sense because it did take off flying like a bird for a second. I poured salt on its tail so it would not fly away again LOL. Oh it was getting to be a pain getting down to the bottom on the inside. And a long time sanding. But it was worth it just to see what nature and those worms created. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary

Very nice save, Gary! Love the figure! The spalting *is* surprising, but not the grubs (although I didn't know about them at the time). I'm remembering that Claire and I drove to your place to visit and I brought several chunks of wood from my excess. If I'd known then what I know now, I'd've left the EU birch to the tree-felling crew and taken only the weeping birch. EU birch is nearly always full of borers, and makes holey bowls, I only recently found out. If you have any birch pieces with really thick bark, that's weeping birch and very nice to work with.

Definitely worth saving Gary, that grain is pretty cool, very nice piece,I see half of a left side of a deer head, it’s ear and a antler, I saw the eye also you were talking about and a spooky face also on that one side, Glad you where able to save it and didn’t get hurt, never know where those things are bouncing around to when they fly off 😵‍💫, that CA glue is some stout stuff, Enjoyed the video 👍

Wozza thought you'd lost it when it flew off, you stuck at it and done a grand job, lovely finish. Irene could see a fisherman with his pole wearing a porkpie hat, i saw a bear standing upright, lots to see, i was surprised because i thought that kinda birch was more like paper inside. Top marks Gary All the best from Lincolnshire UK. Oh yeh Happy Easter to you both from us both.

Wow nice! I finished an almost identical piece a month ago, and it is now sitting in the gallery. I always watch your videos and wonder if I should try a sanding seal. I never have and have never seen the need. Maybe I should try some! I finished my vase with satin wipe on poly, another product I don't use a lot of. Surprisingly it did not darken the light colored spalted birch.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 6 месяцев назад
Thank you very much. I use the sanding sealer with shellac because the shellac I use has wax in it. The sealer does not so easier to get more smoothly. I never use sealer with wipe on poly. But I do use it with the water based poly. I really like have so many choices of finish. Thanks for watching, Gary

At 18:40, top left, there is a very definite face. Looks feminine. Really good. Maybe you could try doing what Jim Sprague "Sprague Wooodturning" does for his tenons. You don't need to keep an old electric fry pan around for melting lots of glue sticks. But, something like that.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 6 месяцев назад
Thank you John and I do see that face. I use a lot of hot glued on tenons for much bigger pieces and they hold good. Not sure why you would melt it in a fry pan. I only put the hot glue around the tenon and none under. Holds great and easy to remove with DNA. Much harder to get one loose with hot glue under it. Thanks for watching, Gary
@johnslaughter5475

@@ThePapa1947 He does a lot of bowls and preps several at a time. He just finds it easier to dip a pre-cut tenon in the liquid glue and stick it on. He removes them using parting tools. The ones I watch most come out on Fridays. They involve a lot of epoxy. Different strokes. 😊

Great save, Gary. That turned out beautiful. Question is with different widths on the top, how did you get an even rim width?
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 5 месяцев назад
Thanks Garth! So get the highest part of the rim to the width I want. Then you need to change the angle of the cut so it brings the lower section to the same width. This might take a few cuts but not hard to do. Just don't rush it. Gary

Hi Kyle...I had to laugh to myself when i watched Phil's yesterday and he turned a piece from Dave. All the time knowing I had uploaded mine much earlier in the week. So no we had no idea. Another good story is that piece he turned I also turned one of those from Dave. The 3 of us was to meet at Dave's a number of years ago. Across the river for me and few hour drive for Phil. Probable was we were heading north in our motorhome so missed the get together. I turned my piece a few years ago and not sure if I made a video of that. Thanks for watching, Gary
