The Treehouse of Horror episodes are supposed to be about scary horror stuff but the new episodes can be about everything and is often not even about horror anymore. Also the old Treehouse of Horror episodes could often have a creepy, disturbing and scary atmosphere to them but the new episodes only try to be funny.
The problem with the newer ones is that instead of playing off of common horror tropes for a Halloween special, they’re just straight up parodies of whatever’s trending at the time. Horror or not. They’ve quite literally lost the Halloween spirit.
It's not even necessarily just this, because they've gone great movie-parody TOH, it's that they aren't doing them because they have solid jokes to make out of the properties, they're just doing it because 'oh this thing is popular'
Treehouse of Horror used to be more self-aware, poking fun at moments in the movies or horror related things they were parodying, sometimes they provided light, hilarious commentary on issues at the time like that election episode where Kang and Kodos disguised themselves as the presidential nominees. Now, they just put Simpsons characters into [BLANK] and go from there, struggling to remain relevant in today's world.
The episode where the teachers cannibalised the kids genuinely terrified me as a kid, always get chills when that episode comes on. Defo the most shocking
this is a pretty nice analysis of how the Treehouses have changed over the years- early episodes went more for spooks, later episodes just went for parody and body counts.
To many, the Lady Gaga is the worst episode of The Simpsons. To me, it's the Spiderman Treehouse of Horror episode. It felt like even lazier Family Guy.
I tremember the first time i ever watched the first Halloween Episode as a kid. It deeply impressed me and left a HUGE longlasting impression. The style was radical different and there was a strong eerie atmosphere in every story. I LOVED the style of it. The lighting, the camera angles and the overall writing as well. As a kid i had NEVER seen anything like that elsewhere in any other cartoon show. Compare that to the current Halloween episodes and it's like seeing an old childhood friend who's gone crazy, unpredictable and suffering from Drug abuse. Whole personality completely destroyed and it just hurts to see it because you are constantly reminded how low things have come.
“Pathetic humans! They made a video about Halloween episodes...in November!” “Who’s still thinking about Halloween? We’ve already got our CHRISTMAS decorations up!”

1. Having the best Treehouse of Horror episodes be from seasons 1-9 makes believe more that those seasons + movie form part of the Simpsons canon. 2. I always thought that if they had the intentions of ending the show then they would end with 31 Halloween specials for every day of the month ( like you said). Some pretty weird thoughts of mine...
Treehouse of Horror episodes are my favorite too, you can tell the writers and animators have a ton of fun making them. Even the boring ones have elements that make it worth watching, and I personally think if they wanted to they could make a show with this concept.
One thing I can say: they are memorable in a weird way. Have you ever been in the situation where you're dreaming, and suddenly you know you're dreaming? It happens to me with nightmares. Things are starting to become incredibly spooky (in dream) and somehow my mind shifts out and kinda says "Yeah, something really scary is about to happen. Just GTFO and wake up". And then you wake up kinda startled but not truly scared. Well, this happens to me with the Treehouse of Horror episodes. I might be having a "normal" dream and everything plays out as normal, but as soon as I see the Simpsons doing something weird as they would do in a Treehouse episode, that's the cue for my mind to realize I'm about to walk into a nightmare. I've escaped 90% of my nightmares by just realizing that I shouldnt be watching a Treehouse of Horror episode in a dream.
“HEEEERRRREEE’S JOHNNY!” *d’oh!* “DAVID LETTEEEERMAAAN!” “Hi David I’m grandpa!” *d’oh!* “I’m Mike Wallace, I’m Morley Safer, and I’m Ed Bradley! All this and Andy Rooney tonight on 60 minutes!” *AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!*
Oh, you accidentally forgot to put a timestamp for the Surfshark ad, here, let me help: 6:34-7:38 There, now people know E V E R Y section of the video :>
"Mr. Ploot?! Homer Simpsons here! When you sold me this house you forgot to mention one little thing...you didn't tell me that it was built..ON AN INDIAN BURIAL GROUND...NO YOU DIDN'T...WELL THAT'S NOT MY RECOLLECTION...YEAH WELL...ALRIGHT, GOODBYE! He says he mentioned it five or six times..."
I think the writers have done too many pop culture references, whereas the earlier specials were more direct parodies that made sense within The Simpsons!
I remember I looked forward to them every Halloween, haven’t watched Simpsons in 5 years 😔.I wouldn’t mind Halloween content in November, months as dry as turkey
Ahh, yes.... 'Halloween of Horror'... REAL drama, REAL character development, REAL arcs... THIS is what modern Simpsons is so sorely lacking, and we need more of it.
I know it was probably intentional but I love how when Kent Brockman’s talking about going to an ad break then Homer says “We’ll be right back” and then an ad plays in the video
Hi I'm Troy McClure you might remember me from such credits lists showcases as That's Not Mall Folks "A MOA Interactive Guide" and The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy: The Credits Continue; Today I'm welcoming you to the list of couch gags credits which include the likes of: The Rick and Morty Team, Guillermo Del Toro, "The Guy who Did Ren and Stimpy who isn't Bob Camp", and many more!
Halloween of Horror was truly one of the best episodes of the last 5 or so years. Love how they did an actual canon Halloween episode, and it was an excellent Homer-Lisa story with great writing and animation throughout the episode. It felt way more like horror than the actual THOH episode was from that season.
C 5 I’m not sure about other schools in the USA but where I went I don’t remember learning how to read Roman numerals until I took Latin in highschool.
You mean the one time and then the 2014 godzilla and the excellent king of the monsters sequel? That's not "time and time again". That's literally one fail and one success
Oh man, when rating the episodes at the end and mentioning their number, it totally bugged me saying literally the letters: X-V-I-I-I, you should've said the number, #18
"Treehouse of Horror X" is the last one I fully enjoyed. I continued watching them up to "XVII", but they were fully into _Zombie Simpsons_ mode by then - mediocre to terrible. A handful of individual segments were decent, but even they tended to fizzle out with weak conclusions.
The treehouse of horror were my favorite episodes as a kid. I look forward to them every year. I even do a binge watch on all the episodes near Halloween.
Imagine a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror segment that seems to set up a parody of Demon Slayer only to reveal its the cast of Demon Slayer doing a recreation of Who Shot Mr. Burns
I've always been lukewarm on The Simpsons, but I LOVE Treehouse of Horror since it's the one time the team gets to be actually creative and animate cool shit
I love the treehouse of horror episodes there some of my favourite episodes in the season. I remember when I was young I was scared of the Gracie films logo at the end because of the organ music and the scream.
The very first episode I ever saw of the Simpsons was Treehouse of Horror XI. I have a very vivid memory of sitting in front of my grandparents' old TV as a kid, getting excited for this show that other kids had told me about, and watching Moe Szyslak get impaled through the chest by a dolphin.
I know it's the most minimal thing but I love that their parody of Dalí isn't limited to the melting clocks everyone knows, but referencing also the twisted ways in which he drew people like in his self-portraits.
I always watch Terror Tales from the Park every Halloween. I watched maybe 2 of the Treehouse of Horror but I know which ones I'll check out next year. Nice video
When I was a kid, these were always my favourite episodes of the entire series -- but now I am appreciating the subtle commentaries of the standard episides in the classic era. I don't watch any of the modern seasons, but I always check out the latest ToH episodes (and they usually remind me why I stopped watching the new episodes). Like you've said, SOMETIMES there's a new diamond in the rough, though!
You guys notice how his top 5 best Treehouse of Horror episodes are from the 90s era while his top 5 worst Treehouse of Horrors are from the post 90s era. Let that be a true testament to how 90s era Simpsons was and will always remain golden!
