Take the 2023 PBS Survey: to.pbs.org/pbs...
Have you ever wondered why your hair grows out of your scalp the way it does? Maybe you've also wondered why our body hair isn't as dense as most other mammals. It really gets you thinking- Why aren't we as furry as our primate counterparts? And what are the advantages of various textures of hair? In this episode, Dr. Tina Lasisi walks us through why hair varies so much across all humans, how hair is a part of our impressive thermoregulatory system, and the shortcomings of addressing hair variation in scientific literature.
For additional information on the history and nuance of discussions around Black people’s hair (women in particular), check out these readings:

Yep, on several occasions when I was a young adult people asked me if I don't mind if they touched & feel my hair. When I wore a natural afro style then again when I wore long braids. These particular curious hair touchers were folks of the Caucasian race, and I'm of the Afro Black American race.

Thanks. We moved to Japan in 1948 (during the Occupation) and we three kids all had curly hair (two blond boys and a brunette sister). My mother used to tell the story of being surrounded with us kids in a train station while my father was buying tickets. It turned out that the crowd had never seen curls before. She also used to tell us that strangers would approach her in stores in the USA when she had us two boys with her; they would angrily denounce her for curling our hair. These idiots could not believe that some blonds could have hair that curly. Alas.

Went to school with several white kids with tightly curly hair from unrelated families. It was a low population as well. It happens. Interesting that some areas apparently lack that. Can think of at least two white actors that use hair products to make their hair moderately curly instead of tightly curly.

I've heard that schools in Japan still require students to have straight black hair and that it even happens to people with a non-japanese lineage to get something from the doctor to prove that they were born like that. There are many things about Japan that I love. I'm even trying to learn Japanese. But there are some things that really need to change imo

I’m white. A couple years ago my little sister’s childhood best friend was in a difficult situation & her kids needed placement. They were 9 & 12, & I was legitimately worried about my lack of understanding of black hair. Fortunately, the 12 year old was a gifted braider who loved doing her sister’s hair, and she was patient with me if she needed any help with her own (though the younger one helped her more than I did). I think it was something that connected them. They’d been separated in foster care, and together in 3 separate homes before coming to me. It was a lot of upheaval in that year & there were things between them that made them feel secure in each other. Doing their hair was a big part of that. I just wanted to provide what they needed & have them feel safe, so I was glad they had that bond. Just giving them a way to stay together did more for them than I could have done for either individually. They were able to make each other feel safe. But, I did want to get better. I don’t know that I’ll ever need the skill. I don’t even do anything with my own hair. I just wanted the girls to feel like they had extra family. Thankfully, things worked out & they are back with their mom & doing great. But it did shine a light on my own ignorance that I’m glad I got to examine.

Love the episode and the learning from it! One small note, the map shown around 4:28 is much more than what is commonly considered "East Asia", with India being solidly in South Asia and Thailand being solidly Southeast Asia, which makes it somewhat misleading, even if the focus is in the region around China, since that is where the label is placed. Again, loved learning about theories of evolutionary drives of hair's variety!

@@pbsterra Hey, sorry to be a bother - at 8:15 - please can you make a correction? 'Wooly hair' is not the disease in and of itself - it is a sign that typically appears in people with a number of other conditions that affect the heart and skin, causing cracking skin, heart problems, shortness of breath, shortened life, etc. such as Naxos Syndrome and Cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome. The study you showed was literally talking about its importance as a sign to investigate for various diseases, and not treating the hair as a disease itself. I feel that the way you presented it was misleading. And it is not simply 'kinky hair in non-black people'. It is distinct from afro-textured hair, and can affect people of any race (although is obviously easier to spot in non-black people).

I know it comes down to physics and the cross sectional shape of the hair that determines degree of curl, but it's still fascinating. As a curly-headed person it still is amazing to me how some hair can maintain such tight curl. You'd expect it to be like steel wool, or hair coated with hairspray, yet it actually has delicateness (until detangling, then definitely feels like combing steel wool and again involves physics). In Africa you'd think lighter color hair would be an advantage because it reflects light and heat, but it's absent.. Regarding hair cuts, I find many hairstylists mess up wavy and curly hair. Better to find someone competant.

I’m 45. Starting around 20, my straight hair started getting curly if I fell asleep with it wet. I don’t mean wavy, I mean actual ringlets that would take hours to achieve. If I brush it before bed, I’ll wake up with it straight, if I don’t, I look like I just left a salon. It’s really strange. I know weight can make a difference. The only time I cut it to my shoulders, it got very wavy- but not ringlets. (if it matters- I’ve always worn it past the shoulders. Straight to slightly wavy, very fine, prone to frizz, light brown with red highlights. I’ve dyed it over the years but almost never use curlers/straighteners, or even hair products /spray, it’s just natural).

I had sort of the opposite experience looking for a barbershop in a new town. Looking at the pictures on the wall, I could tell that the guys were absolute masters of fades and really complicated art... but they turned out not to be too comfortable with what some of my friends call "the old white guy cut." When I lived in Kenya, I was never brave enough to go to the local village barber; I always went to the higher-end salon in town, which catered to expat customers and white Kenyans.

Gotta say though the biggest difference between my hair and my best friend, a black woman, is our feelings about rain. I wish I had the words to define my hair. I understand some of its usual habits, like it being really strong, a lot, and likes to not keep anything it unless I use tension methods, but otherwise it’s straightish hair (small wave to it which is only seen when I keep it long). Also heavy. I know, generically, I’m probably getting a mix of what might be European (England and Iberian Peninsula area) Native American in origin but not sure what that means for my hair as it doesn’t seem to fall neatly into either category of the usual types in those populations. Like I said, wish I could define it. Honestly I wish there was better words to describe too because my new niece’s hair is also even more unique as she has not only similarity to my family’s side (mine isn’t uncommon, all my siblings have it) but also more Native American and African hair. It’s created an interesting texture to her hair as it doesn’t neatly fall into any category too. For now, we are relying more on knowledge from the African American side of the family for hair care so we can properly care for and maintain it. Don’t ever want her to feel self conscious about it and that starts with understanding how to care for it. Least that is my few.

For one: Environment plays a huge factor in human phenotypical development. You find straight hair in populations that have adapted to northern colder climes. In fact both Europeans & East Asians spent 10's of thousands of years during the ice age in their particular environments. 2nd I had no idea there was a thing called wholly hair syndrome. Insanely Eurocentric perspective on whats probably a genetic re-emergence of the Africoid traits original African immigrants into Europe & in Asia if this so called syndrome pops up in them. Allowing social cultural views to bleed into science is dangerous & we still have to stay vigilant. It leads to bad science & harmful practices.

@@murph_mustela No, from many studies it has been shown that baldness in men have started to drop down into their 20's. Clearly it's something you inherit from your parents, maybe from the mother's side(?). Steroids is a very interesting topic as well, especially in regards to *women* using it for bodybuilding purposes. As for baldness in general it fills a purpose or we wouldn't have it around. We just don't know what that might be. It could be something going way back to when we were apes most likely. You'd think that from a breeding aspect baldness would have been weeded out thousands of years ago, yet here we are today. In the end nobody really minds baldness, it's just something that happens to many men as they grow older.

@@michaelenquist3728 It's not that it's "useless" but rather than we humans have been breeding with that trait for hundreds and hundreds of generations. Despite people looking down on baldness, it's around even to this day and it's an appearance trait. Would men rather have lush hair? I'd imagine so but here we are with plenty of men around the world going bald every day. I wouldn't call baldness a "mutation", there is clearly something going on with the trait. It's not like children very rarely being born with a useless non-functioning "tail". I'm fairly certain baldness is a trait that could have been removed from mankind long ago. There might be a day when it's gone thank to science along with many other traits we don't approve of or would like to improve. The sky is the limit I guess.

Which came first: curly hair or straight hair? Honestly, it’s hard to say but there are several theories as to why some humans evolved to grow curly hair over straight. Different populations have different evolutionary histories, which is why we see a lot of variation in hair around the world. In the latest episode of ‘Why Am I Like This?’ : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Me4IljEafZA.html, see why humans have scalp hair; explore theories as to why there are different hair types, and then discuss how our biases play into how we define and categorize hair. Let us know your thoughts on the skit or science! 'EQUAL DISTRIBUTION' of Trait. Curly hair or straight hair I can already see how it might be evolutionarily advantageous; the one I can't fathom is MPB 👴 Lice probably drove some changes, since their claws match specific follicle shapes. However hari follicle shapes are a lot more varied than straight or curly and differ within traditional racial groups, so it's not a simple answer. Genetic mutation is random, but evolution can direct those random differences. Our species originated in Africa. I love this episode! So interesting, fun, and informative. I have long, straight strawberry-blonde hair, and a Scotts Irish ancestry. My Korean wife has long straight black hair. We are fascinated by people with curly hair. Hoping we can all embrace and revel in our diversity!

@PBS Terra I understand how this blocks radiation from the sun (learned that the hard way after a haircut), but I don't understand how it maximizes heat loss.

There is one type of hair that I wouldn’t consider good though: very straight hair with a double crown that sticks out in every direction. I’m so blessed with my thick wavy hair.

Why does hair curl to begin with? I was looking it up and got mixed responses like the number of sulfur compounds of the hair strand itself vs. the angle that the hair grows in

Saying this as a black woman... I know skits are part of this series, but I'd rather see hair appreciation communicated in a more wholesome way instead of hyper-focusing on micro-aggressions. I found the constant flip to it aggravatingly alienating because, despite this being something I've genuinely always wanted to learn about myself, even on THIS channel it feels like I can't WITHOUT my existence being turned into a boarder (and very on the nose) sociopolitical lecture. Yes, highlighting the alienation is important but throwing the skit out and sticking with what was said at 7:41 makes the same point WITHOUT reminding me about the rude ways SOME people react to me, even if it's not done with bad intentions. Next time, please more education and less cringe skits. I'm positive it'll be just as affective! 🙂

Speaking as another black woman, I loved the skits. It pits scientific fact against biases that have no basis in science at all. It's a reminder for all of us regarding how irrational and nonsensical the human race can be at times.....most usually when their comparing themselves the one another.....or claiming not to see the biological differences we so clearly have (I don't see color 🙄). People have suffered and died because of these biases...they still are. I personally don't fault a RU-vid video for reminding me that racism exists (how could I forget), I fault the perpetrators of racism for putting me through it in the first place. Also, racial inequality has been existing boldly and unapologetically for centuries in the US sometimes with horrific results (i.e. the Charlottesville church massacre). Some people are perfectly fine with being "too on the nose" when confronting it. BTW I loved the call out of Woolly Hair Syndrome as bias masquerading as scientific fact. Excellent job!

She says “good” and “bad” hair is not the right words, but imagine having oily hair AND thin, dense hair. But this is probably only a problem for people with mixed indigenous American and European ancestry like me.

Lots of different types of hair is an indicator that it is NOT selected for, because otherwise we'd see differences according to climate or culture (depending on whether it's environmental or sexual selection).

Expressing your identity or individual style by your hair? Better dont do that - you might tread on some peoples opinion about certain hairstyles being exclusive to their ethnicity or culture. Tough times for a non-black person with "wooly hair syndrome" since they cannot even have dreadlocks or something therelike because they are not black and so I understand that one might sonsider it a "disease".
