This is a pretty minor detail, but the SMG has a collapsible stock, not a folding stock. A folding stock folds either underneath or to the side whereas a collapsible stock is adjustable in length. The best comparison functionally is probably those old lightsaber toys.
Late night gaming, how would you feel about doing behind the scenes video for when your making evolution videos? The process seems interesting. Love your work, keep it up 👍👍👍
Ever since ODST, I've always thought that the SMG should always have been Supressed. that way it creates and fills a new role in the sandbox. A stealth weapon.
@ratkeep idk it definitely feels like it does. I've been doing a Legendary "realistic skull" run, and the suppressed pistol kills in one shot, and usually the covenant has no idea where I am, whereas if I use the snipers EVERYONE looks at me. Idk if it's positioning or what bc I don't think it is hard coded to have a shorter range.
one niche I feel the odst smg excels at is against drones as its one of few options for reliable hitscan(ish) weapons that can take care of such agile enemies the carbine isn't always available, the AR lacks the same precision and firerate to reliably hit, and the pistols damage is so low you have to go for headshots, which is really hard on drones so naturally, the smg is a great counter and has saved me many a bugger-filled firefight round
Yes, when I’m playing ODST firefight and a drone swarm spawns I always head for the nearest gun rack with an smg. By far one of the most reliable guns for drones.
@@l0u13__3 In Firefight on legendary the brute shot is actually still pretty rare, and there is no guarantee you'll get a brute wave before a drone wave. The SMG may be hot garbage on everything else but the nice thing is the racks are always there as a panic option for drones.
The ODST SMG is a jack of all trades, except against buggers. That thing tears them up and is a life saver on harder difficulties. Still, I'd be lying if I were to say that aesthetics weren't the main reason I hold on to it.
@@SerathDarklands I think its were you grab an smg that is scripted to keep firing at anything, pitting it as your secondary and then just dual wielding.
The sound dampener in Halo 5 silences and hides your position on the radar but it ALSO increases your effective range. It's basically the long barrel and silencer in one, which is why it's a higher level req compared to the silencer and long barrel. Really good for stealth in late game when you need range in warzone.
@@2010ngojo I think that's the whole point of the dampener, you get the silencer perks with out the reduced range. Just a gameplay mechanic and it's really obscure so I'm not surprised that no one knows about it. Just like how the kinetic bolts do extra damage to players lol
@@2010ngojo traditionally speaking, yes. There is modern suppressors that don't sacrifice bullet range but the trade off is a longer profile and much heavier than a standard suppressor. More often than not though it's your typical aluminum baffling or whatnot.
@@2010ngojo In real life, sound suppressors tend to increase muzzle velocity because they increase barrel length. The only time it would decrease bullet velocity is if the user opted to use subsonic ammunition (ammunition that does not break the sound barrier, and thus is more quiet). For the most part, sound suppressors reducing range or muzzle velocity is a myth embedded in many people now as a result of game developers just trying to balance the attachment. It would make much more sense to reduce the weapon’s mobility stats because it makes the weapon longer and heavier. While I’m at it, “silencer” is a word invented in Hollywood, they’re called sound suppressors in real life.
Two minor notes, some suppressors can actually reduce muzzle velocity, by using rubber wipes, which the bullet passes through. Also, some baffle designs can have a similar effect, due to leeching the gasses. Finally, in the original patents, it’s actually referred to as a silencer. So via technicality, both are correct.
We all know that tune that LNG starts playing when the video is coming to an end. Life hack: Any time you're at a social gathering that you are ready to leave, just start playing that song out loud and no one will question you leaving or try to pressure you into staying a little bit longer.
Eh not to bad a comment better than the cringey and obviously untrue "babe wake up >insert name< just uploaded" that really makes me almost throw up lol it's funny till you realize how sad that person must be
I mean it is a yt channel accessable world wide. And people in Australia play Halo a lot which is nearly opposite of U.S in most cases. So it is always uploaded late at night due to how popular English is.
@@austinhinton3944 one callback I did like was how the lightrifle performed like the halo 2 beta battle rifle, being burst when hip firing and single shot while scoping in
@@exoticbutters4212 I wonder why they did end up changing that to 3-round burst? Not that I'm complaining or anything. I'm interested to see this new burst plasma weapon in H.I.
There's only a few standout tools left that have been found across a few generations of Halo games to cover next. The Rocket Launcher, Covenant Carbine, Fuel Rod Gun, the Frag and Plasma Grenades, and the Beam Rifle.
You're almost out of weapons, and I think for the future maybe you could do the evolution of halo vehicles? Not at all at once, I.E evolution of Halo's Warthog? Really like those videos, they're weirdly fascinating.
This is my favorite weapon in Halo. Halo 3’s Dual Wield SMG’a first person view is so iconic looking and don’t even get me started on the Master Chief posing with them in H2. So nostalgic for me.
I just completed a run of ODST where I purposefully only used UNSC weapons for the whole campaign, and I gotta say, it gave me a new appreciation of the smg in that it was the best choice a lot of the time when you weren't near a weapons cache in Mombasa Streets or needed something with a bit of range. I even chose it sometimes over more powerful weapons because some spots of the game had opportunities to get new UNSC weapons placed few and far between on the map, and the smg had a reliably large ammo pool as long as it was used wisely. I definitely learned to use it as a medium/long range weapon more than I ever had before.
I love also how the Halo 2 Anniversary multiplayer SMG also collapses it’s stock when you dual wield it. Making it easier to handle for the Spartan. Cool detail.
I think a video on the evolution of plasma and frag grenades would be really interesting, especially since they appear in every game iirc Also evolution of the flashlight when
Not gonna lie the odst style of the SMG has always been my favorite gun possibly ever as I tend to try and find ways to mod it into other games that I'm playing like fallout 4 and others
The original smg models(especially the h2 anniversary model) take a noticeable amount of design cues from the MP7 from the slanted, blocky handguard, the integral folding foregrip and in the anniversary there's even the MP7s ambi charging handle at the back of the reciever, whereas the the halo 5 model is like a hybrid of the MP7 and the P90. Ironic considering those guns contended against each other for military contracts in the 90s
"Snappy" is a great way to describe all of the SMG animations. I have an unexplainable love for the SMG and its animations have always been my favorites since Halo 2, I just have a ton of fun running around with it even when it might not be the most effective choice. When someone says "Submachine Gun", it's always the first thing I think of. Hopefully it'll have a place in the Halo: Infinite sandbox.
This was a very interesting video, which gave me more of an appreciation for this weapon than before. It kinda makes me want an “evolution of Halo’s forgotten weapons” which covers weapons that showed up in one or 2 games and were never seen again. Weapons like the mauler, bruteshot and plasma launcher would be really interesting to hear more about
Really wanting to see an evolution of the carbine! Though, this may be something more suited for the future when we get to see more of the “Pulse Carbine” and its performance in game. Solid video as usual!
The one aspect of this critique I disagree with entirely is the SMG in 3. In close range it outstrips the AR in 1 hand but outside of close range the AR does better.
ive actually always loved the SMG and I would take it over an AR in Halo 3 any day of the week. The H5 version of the SMG is my fav. its just a very satisfying gun to use.
The Halo 3 ODST Silenced SMG sits right alongside the Halo 2 multiplayer SMG in terms of memories for me. They both fulfill distinct roles in their respective sandboxes very well while still being unrecognizably the same gun
I loved the SMG, both the look and feel of the weapon still hold a special place in my heart. But it really showed off one of the worst features of Halo 2 that continues in Halo games to this day: the ammo cap is pitiful. To go from ten mags of AR ammo in CE to 3 mags of SMG ammo in 2 was a pain, and it's never gotten better. Too many weapons do not allow you to carry enough backup ammunition to make them worthwhile to even consider picking up. The only real solution in most cases was the triple-wield trick in Halo 2 and 3, but that carried with it the problem of effectively only having a single weapon on top of the lack of melee and grenades and you STILL had less ammo than in CE. In many cases, it's only gotten worse in Halo 4 and 5. I'm sure that it's a not-so-subtle way of forcing the it's player to constantly switch weapons and explore the sandbox, but I hated it, and I still hate it.
11:08 okay, the stock collapsing for duel wield is pretty nice. I was thinking either that or sincea spartan doesn't need the stock the pick up animation is them grabbing it and pushing the stock closed
I love using this gun every time I play floodgate on legendary because of how much fun it is to rip and tare through flood. It’s also fun to combine with the plasma rifle and mauler. Hence why it’s my personal favorite incarnation of the weapon besides the ODST smg
4:54 what I recently discovered, which i find rather interesting, is that the SMG is more accurate, and has a faster time to kill than the assault rifle does. The SMG excels over the assault rifle in almost every way, yet... It's... Redundant, and left unnoticed within the sandbox.
ODST’s version is probably my favourite, since it felt more useful in the campaign than in either Halo 2 or 3. As for the SMG itself, I’ve always been a bit mixed towards it, as I feel like it’s addition alongside dual-wielding, ruined the plasma rifle in order to put the latter in the same category as the former. In Halo 2’s multiplayer, it was basically the newb weapon of choice, especially dual-wielded, until you could find a BR or carbine. Properly wielded, it could also hold off shotgun and sword-wielders.
Rad! Love the halo smg! It's compact and really slick! That caseless magazine is also super cool! Loved the suppressed smg and the halo 2 anniversary version feels super cool to use! The sound and model make it feel snazzy and more lethal. Great stuff! 😎👍🏻
I might do some reviews of halo games and might use these clips and snippets on these weapon videos because of how well you explain some of these points Great video as always however and I wish you good luck
i grew up as a kid blissfully unaware of most of halo beyond halo 1, and the halo 2 E3 demo. I remember seeing it and hearing it for the first time, and its shooting sound immediately made me coin the term “popcorn gun”.
15:34 Minor correction: The sound dampener suppresses your weapon's sound AND increases your range. It is a combination of the suppressor and long barrel at cost of not being able to mix and match your sight and at a higher req cost.
I’m actually a huge fan of Halo 5’s SMG model. I’m 18 now, but I was 12 when Halo 5 released and I would always hold my Xbox controller like the SMG and pretend I was doing the Halo 5 reload. I prefer the classic Halo titles and have a lot of nostalgia for them but I ALSO have a decent amount of nostalgia for Halo 4 and 5, and I feel good when I play them nowadays.
Halo 3 ODST SMG reminds me a lot of the Reach AR, both are perfect secondary weapons that can be used, as you put, as a jack of all trades weapon that's incredibly reliable. Carbine and SMG in ODST and Needle Rifle/Focus Rifle plus AR in Reach are my go-tos
As much as I love the dual wield feature in Halo 2 and Halo 3, it is very true that it's pretty limiting in what the player can do. Not being able to enter vehicles, throw grenades, melee, or use equipment while holding a second weapon is annoying, and it does drastically reduce your options for play style. That said, I don't agree that the SMG is redundant or hasn't got a place in the sandbox in Halo 3. I found myself using the SMG more in Halo 3 than I did in Halo 2, really. I know the intention of adding the SMG to Halo 2 was to separate the role of the Halo 1 assault rifle into two weapons, one being a high fire rate, low damage, close range gun with a large ammunition capacity, and the other being a medium range, medium damage, higher accuracy weapon with a moderate rate of fire. Obviously the assault rifle in Halo 3 ostensibly fills that role better but I just always felt for some reason as if the assault rifle was somewhat underpowered and not that intuitive to use. I prefer the SMG in Halo 3 for close range hectic engagements when I need something with a lot of bullets that shoots fast.
Whenever you run out of weapons to look at, would you consider looking at the evolution of maps throughout Halo? I think there's some interesting things to look at how maps evolve from one game to the next. For example, Coagulation has a third level to the bases that Blood Gulch lacked, and some more rock formations in the open areas of the map to take cover behind. Or even aesthetic and thematic changes to the map from one game to the next; like how Lockout is a forerunner-themed flood research center on a Halo ring, while Blackout is human-themed weather station in the arctic.
i havent finished the video yet, but the halo 3 odst smg made its way back into destiny 2 as an entire weapon manufacturer called veist. side loaded and top loaded guns that are all suppressed :) It's a neat homage
I just realized it didn't leave casings. That makes the silenced smg even cooler now. No muzzle flash, minimized sound, and you don't leave behind any evidence. No wonder the ODSTs used it.
i always use the smg and plasma pistol together when dual wielding in halo 2. i dont have go get head shots, i can just dish out damage on an elite and his grunts. it's great! also i love hearing this dude say "it's BEAUTIFUL"
I really like “Blocky” and industrially “chunky” guns, so the Halo 2A campaign SMG was my beautiful baby in my arms! And the Halo 5 SMG is one of the few things I loved about Halo 5’s sandbox. The P90 was always my baby in modern shooters, so I instantly fell in love with it! As for Infinite, since they confirmed no dual wielding, I hope they bring the SMG back as a faux dual wield weapon like in the Halo 2 demo.
I think the SMG fit well in a campaign context and wish there were one or two more situations where they force the use of it. It shined brightest when given a suitable enemy type such as flood spores or buggers or clusters of grunts. I enjoyed the few times in Halo 2 where it was given to you in a specific situation. Like when the covenant are first boarding Cairo station. Nothing shredded that pack of enemies as well. Also in ODST it was the star of the show. It FELT like they simply tightened up the spread and lowered the firing rate a hair. Just gave it a little range and controllability. It really transforms it. If this is what the SMG had always been like it would've made much more sense vs the Assault Rifle.
Great video, though I disagree with your assessment of the Halo 3 SMG and the SMG's role in general. Yes, dual wielding is a trap and you probably not do it with an SMG unless you are styling on grunts in Crows Nest or fighting Flood in Halo 3, however in multiplayer single wielding it, it's identity is pretty clear, it's range is between the ar and shotgun. It isn't a very large range, I would call it close mid range. It could beat an AR in this range and to and to melee kill which was omnipresent in Halo 3. It could also beat a shotgun if you started far away enough. You would think that the plasma rifle and spiker would be better suited to that role but they aren't hitscan which causes precious time in that small range. The plasma rifle is more an alternative or plasma pistol in that game and the spiker an actual better weapon to dual wield with the plasma rifle, but single welding in that range I would pick SMG. I love the Halo 3 SMG it is my favorite weapon in that game. The ODST SMG is much more clever and you are right it is a great reliable back up and I am glad to see it in Halo 3 now, but the Halo 3 SMG has a role, it's just not dual wielding, it's shredding and beating ARs to time to melee.
When I played 2 when I was four years old I loved dual wielding smg’s and when anniversary came out I loved how cool the model was and how loud and aggressive it was. I think the re-imagining of it visually was cool! Not my favorite though, that damn ODST smg is way too iconic.
I actually quite like the H2A rendition of the M7 Caseless. The MP7 style charging handle looks really cool imo, and with a few design modifications (mainly the folding foregrip and fixing the collapsible stock) it would be my absolute favorite rendition of the SMG. I also hold the ODST Tactical SMG in very High regard. Both it and the SOCOM Ultramag version of the pistol are my favorite variations of Halo weapons
The sound dampener I believe was actually a combination of a silencer and long barrel, suppressing but also increasing range rather than decreasing it, or at the very least retaining its default range. It was my go to for the dmr since I thought its default sight was just fine. Also you explained the laser sight a bit weird, what it does is increases bullet magnetism, or in other words, increases the distance your crosshair can be away from an enemy before turning red, it was literally the shit shots gift from God...you could literally see your bullets making hard curves to connect with an enemies head lmao
Thanks to the fact that a few years ago the Halo games I played the most were Reach and ODST, so now every time I hear the SMG from any other Halo game it catches me off guard a lot of the time.
I like the way you described the Halo 3 ODST SMG. You described it to resemble an ODST. Jack of all trades, Not particular powerful in any situation, multipurpose and strong tactical presentation, could all be used to also describe an ODST.
I've always hated that the silenced SMG in ODST didn't actually have a functionality. Its almost certainly due to the constraints that game was made under, but it would have been so fun to sneak around New Mombasa picking off grunt patrols and trying to stay off the radar.
I don’t know why, but I always enjoyed using the smg. Maybe it’s because you get to live out that 90’s power fantasy, where everybody falls at one pass of the gun. Probably my most hyped Evolution vid!
