Honestly I don’t mind the current system. The only change I would make is limiting it to 3 attempts at road courses and superspeedways. And if someone tries to pull a Harvick nascar should throw the book at them.

It depends what you (collectively) value more. I don’t think anything is right or wrong in absolute terms, but there are decisions that take away from the “integrity” for lack of better terms, of the race that add entertainment value. In a vacuum those decisions are zero sum changes, but if you’re nascar management and entertainment is your priority, then adding overtime is a net positive to you. For me, I think the race itself and how the teams navigate it are the entertainment and when you hit the advertised distance, come hell or high water, the finish is the finish whatever it may be. At the same time, if you have a situation where someone spoils a natural finish they need to be punished to discourage shenanigans. If they don’t, then they create their own incentive to add extra laps on which literally moves the goalpost. People are allowed to like that, I personally think it takes away from the larger race itself in the exact same way the playoffs takes away from the collective season. It depends who you ask and what they care about more. (Edit: does it bother me enough to not watch if I see it on tv? No, but I’m also not going to give nascar any of my money to go out of my way and watch it, and maybe that’s good enough for Phelps)

Honestly, NASCAR should go back to one overtime attempt like the GWC from 2004 to 2009, now we have unlimited attempts which is ridiculous. 2023 Daytona 500 for example had 3 overtime restarts, resulting in the longest Daytona 500 ever at 530 miles. Last year's winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr ran out of fuel shortly after the checkered flag, if it wasn't for that final lap caution, Stenhouse (and some other drivers) might have ran out of fuel on the final lap.

Just make it one attempt at a GWC finish and no more attempts afterwards. Too many wrecks and crashes that could have been avoided if there was only one restart, especially if NASCAR is all about saving teams money then go back to one GWC only. I think you can bring back racing back to the line... as long as it is safe to do so. If a car crashes on the backstretch, that has no impact on getting back to the start/finish line so let them race back to the line in those situations. The 2021 Daytona 500 where McDowell won, the crash was behind them so let the leaders race back to the line. Would have been fun to see Chase & McDowell racing back to the line for the win.

@chromediesel444 Even though I do have perks with the current overtime system, I do not think it is entirely responsible for Ryan Newman’s crash. Yes, the aggression that spikes in overtime did lead up to that, but realistically, the crash could have happened even at a restart with 2 laps to go in the normal 200 lap regulation(And at any lap in the race as a matter of fact). While the crash certainly wouldn’t have occurred had there been no overtime procedure, to say it would have only happened then is just incorrect.

I did not mid Jeff Gordon if Rusty Wallice was doing poorly or DNF (my favorite driver at the time). Most of the love came from people first being Jimmy Johnson fans and Jeff Gordon being teammates then moving to Jeff Gordon after Jimmy Johnson was winning NASCAR Cup every year or almost winning every year becuse rules in playoff format meant to stop Jimmy Johnson in playoffs, actually helped Jimmy Johnson win a few of his Cup trophies he never would have won under older playoffs or points formats.

As a fan of both F1 & Indycar in addition to NASCAR, I am very surprised that either series has yet to adopt the GWC finish. Indycar still has the racing back to the line rule in its rule book though I haven't seen this in Indycar in almost 20 years. Racing back to the line largely ended after the death of Dan Wheldon due to how dangerous it is. Instead Indycar has just ended the race if there is a caution on the last lap. However in recent years Indycar has also introduced a race clock usually set around 2 hours meaning if the race can't conclude within that time frame, everyone is given half points based on where they were when the clock reached zero or where they qualified in the case of races that don't get started due to weather delays. F1 also uses the race clock but it rarely reaches zero in most cases as F1 also has both the virtual safety car & a safety car to make sure laps & the allotted race distance are still completed. The only time that F1 has had an issue with the race clock was at the Belgian GP a couple of years ago where the majority of the time was spent in the paddock due to terrible conditions after running only a couple of laps under the safety car & the FIA simply let the clock run out.
@GinoLaMainFroide
@GinoLaMainFroide 7 месяцев назад
F1 can't do GWC because of the no refueling rule. The closest thing they could do is to abuse the red flag rules like they did in Australia last year, but given how poorly it ended, I don't think they'll try it again soon. They actually suspended the race clock for more than hour in Spa in 2021 citing force majeure, it's just that visibility to start the race was never good enough. A better example of race clock messing up things is Suzuka 2022, as they could only do half ot the race (but to be fair, given how dark it was getting in the end, I think a red flag was near, clock or not).

@xavierjuno4572 The field would be much more spread out in this situation. They they would be fighting for 1 position and result in a 1, maybe 2 car crash. Then it's done and the race is over. I agree that they should just run the scheduled distance and finish the race however it naturally happens. Overtime is a gimmick and the Daytona 530 last year was absurd. I think things like this hurt NASCAR’s credibility and make it harder to take seriously as a sporting event.
@SHarrell42069

A race should NEVER end under caution! Here's how I would do it: - No scoring loops, all positions determined by video/timing/scoring at the moment the caution comes out at any point during the race, including the finish - Unlimited attempts at a Green/White/Checkered finish - Once the leader has taken the checkered flag, the next flag ends the race A race should only end under caution IF severe weather/darkness impacts the race after halfway, or if the caution comes out AFTER the leader has taken the white flag.
@SigmaRho2922
@SigmaRho2922 4 месяца назад
IndyCar should adopt overtime rules as a result of the situation that occurred in the 2023 Indy 500, when three red flags occurred during the final 20 laps, including two in the last ten and the last red flag coming with two laps to go. The rules would be similar to NASCAR except that an overtime finish would be required if a caution began or continued with three laps remaining rather than two, but the restarts would be the same at two laps and there would be a limit of three overtimes.
@whalesequence

It is a gimmick. Plus it makes the ending take way longer, especially at super speedways or truck series season finales. I would say the best way is to have 1 GWC attempt if a wreck happens up 5 laps. If they crash again, just end the damn race. I want to move on with my day.

Well... races have to finish under a checquered flag. I don't mind the Overtime system, but I think the amout of laps behind the Pace Car is too big. On Indy 500 they do 3 at most. So, when the pace car comes out, I suggest that no more than 1 lap should be done extra after the track gets cleaned up. After that lap Green should come out. That would be kind of an issue at like Bristol or Martinsville though, so maybe these tracks will make an exception due to how small they are.

The reason being is I don’t want another 2020 Clash, 2017 Fall Talladega, 2021 Knoxville, and 2023 Truck Finale. Those were AWFUL races and none of the drivers seemed to want to finish the race, so if they can’t finish on their own, then they shouldn’t be able to. It also helps keep the race on the big channels so that way they don’t have to switch. Other than that, I’m fine with Overtime

It’s funny how everyone is like “we can’t go back to the old way, it’s boring.” Meanwhile everyone also agrees that late 90s early 2000s nascar was the most exciting. Gimmicks are good for excitement today, but they take away from the integrity of the sport. NFL is by far the most popular thing on tv and the majority of the games do not have an exciting ending, at least not at the buzzer. If you’re racing a 400 mile race, whoever is leading at the line after 400 miles is the only legitimate winner. Imagine San Fran having a 14 pt lead in the closing minutes of the superbowl and the refs just give KC 10 points so we don’t have a boring finish. That’s literally what NASCAR would do.

In 2013 Spring Talladega for both the Xfinity and the cup series race, they only did one attempt at overtime because of darkness instead of 3

The Jr fanbase are such sore losers after hearing Jeff Gordon's POV at Talladega in a podcast. But they also exposed how finishing under caution might be the lamest way to finish a race. Overtime isn't perfect rn, because it's limited to only 2 laps. It should vary depending on the type of track they're on. If on a superspeedway, 10 laps overtime, race ends if The Big Wreck happens. If the leader's ahead, race it back to the checkered like the old days. Intermediates get 3 laps, same rules apply, short tracks get 20, still same ruleset. Also, no more than 3 attempts under CRINGE network, NBC can make it 5 cause the booth is better

I hate NASCAR Overtime. It robs people of wins. The race should end at the scheduled distance. But NASCAR at this point is a far throw away from the days of "May the best man win". They are just focused on keeping the cars as close together as possible, and they will call as many cautions as they need to make that happen.

I'm boring here. My favorite ending is the scheduled distance. If it finishes under caution? So be it. The overtime rules have ruined some interesting strategy races, which honestly I think have their place in the sport. Creates for different kinds of finishes adding to the unpredictability of the sport. Yeah, maybe not with a chaotic finish, but sometimes with a mid pack car making a gutsy strategy call and being rewarded with the win.

I prefer the 1 attempt at overdrive. Especially since we're supposed to be saving the teams money nowadays and time consumption wouldn't be so bad as in the races wouldn't drag on past the originally advertised distance

So in other words, nascar was altered because of popular drivers and legends being “wronged” or put in danger. If it was a back marker, none of these things would be put in place today. Thank you Brian France.

On road courses and superspeedways overtime should be only one lap.

The current format is probably the best if you went back to the race ending under yellow people would be up in arms. Certain tracks could use limits of 1-3 to this rule like COTA. Last year the last 2 laps took like 30 mins with all the wrecks.

I like the idea of the GWC, though can see the appeal of just ending the race, so that cars don't get banged up. $$$ talks. If they complete one GWC lap, the next flag ends the race is best. The half lap thing was stupid. If not 1 lap completed, 3 tries is good. Though can we possibly get a couple more laps at short tracks. That's too few.

Yeah but I would relax the rule by saying the Yellow shouldn't automatically end the race on the White Flag no matter what happens behind the leaders.

If the final lap comes with the Caution, I would wave the Yellow-Black Checkered flag and add 10 laps to create time to finish under the green aka checkered flag.

I know there are safety concerns but I really miss racing back to the line. Keep the current GWC rules but add racing to the line.

Give them 3 attempts and always let them race to the checkers on the last lap unless there’s a flip or really bad wreck.

I think the current system is good. The only complaint I have is when we have races that keep stacking up at the end, NASCAR has a habit of turning a blind eye if another wreck happens before the white flag. They have ample time to throw the yellow, but let the leader take the white flag first to officially make it the last attempt before throwing a caution. Just be consistent with the yellows is all I ask.

Overtime is cool. But it gets annoying if a suspect caution comes out to bunch the whole field up. Nascar and the rule book can go to hell. As much as I hate the FIA governing body. It beats the nascar rule book in regards to there model of entertainment. Just my opinion

superspeedways: finish under yellow Road courses, rack em up at the end of sector 2 on the track and one try at green white checkered Ovals, 3 attempts Short tracks, unlimited amount because it’s just fun to watch.

The fact that we STILL haven't axed the green white checkered attempts and just gone back to just racing to the advertised distance UNLESS DEEMED IMPOSSIBLE after the asinine GWC nonsense that happened last season is a crime all of it's own.

In recent years, I've really started disliking OT. The worst version was the OT line with the infinite number of OTs coming close. I say get rid of OT and go scheduled distance but I know that won't happen. RIP Toby Keith 🙏.

I hate them too, it just drags on and unnecessarily tears up cars, I say get rid of them, because no matter how lame a yellow finish is, 3 green white checkers and 2 red flags is way more anticlimactic.
@joshuahofman4708
@joshuahofman4708 7 месяцев назад
Let’s be real here, the only time multiple OT is necessary is the drafting tracks, so let’s limit those to 1 or 3 at the most. Other tracks let’s do as many as necessary
