You know what would be a good design for these super star destroyers? A-Wing proof bridges
@tba113
@tba113 5 лет назад
Yeah. Command bridges hanging way out on the surface of the ship is a vulnerability pretty much all Star Wars (and Star Trek, for that matter) ships have, and it is totally avoidable by the simple expedient of putting the bridge near the center of the ship. It's not like they don't have dozens of bridge crew whose only job is to monitor sensor feeds from all over the ship anyway. And it's not like this problem is unique to Imperial designs, either; Leia's "Mary Poppins" moment in TLJ was due to a single starfighter's strafing run on a Mon Cal ship's exposed bridge. I remember there being a passage in the novelization of the game Halo, where Captain Keyes is silently cursing art-department ship designers who put aesthetics above practicality: with ships that run to kilometers in length, it's not like windows would actually help navigate the ship, or provide targeting data, or do much of anything useful, really. Instead, they mostly just provide the enemy with a convenient (and often glowing) weak point to hit for massive damage.
@Mike-mt4ln

Usually the shields would absorb all damage from a ram. The executor went down because the shields were down
@BungieStudios
@BungieStudios 5 лет назад
@@tba113 In Halo, the Covenant keep their bridges in the heart of their ships. They are well protected, but a well placed MAC round will kill the ship and its bridge, shredding it to pieces. It also grants a large, center mass target. Without the MAC, the Covenant are near invulnerable thanks to their incredibly strong armor. The Bridge will be the last section alive in that case.
@ribbitgoesthedoglastnamehe4681
A-Wing proof bridges? What a foolish idea! You mean we would admit being afraid of such puny craft? Imperial officers lead from the front and are ready to risk their lives, not hiding inside a ship! If we would admit being afraid of the enemy tactics, we would look weak! Looking weak is of course much worse than being weak, we rule by making the enemy fear us, not fearing the enemy!

The Supremacy is a fascinating concept, a mobile factory, training center, research facility, shipyard and command center all in one. Such a ship could be used to supply and arm an army and fleet away from the eyes of your enemies and during war act as a mobile staging ground deep behind enemy lines, like a US aircraft carrier on steroids. Why on Earth you would use such an important strategic asset on the frontlines to chase down a fleeing enemy, especially because it slows down your entire escort fleet preventing them from accelerating and easily destroying said enemy is a level of stupid that makes anything the Empire ever did look brilliant by comparison.

In all honesty, seeing both the Executor and the Supremacy's respective introductions highlights the...underwhelming presentation of the latter. Look at how you have a bunch of star destroyers, already established as dwarfing and looming over another ship in a prior film, slowly being utterly eclipsed by the shadow of something massive. Then you have a bunch of ships appear out of nowhere, capped off by "wide load comin' through boys" in a perspective that seems underwhelming in comparison. Rogue One does things better, so it's not just a "newfangled Star Wars ree" sort of thing, as they made the Death Star look like an *absolute unit* just from having Star Destroyers sitting there while the main weapon is being put into place.

How I would've intorduced the _Supremacy_ is as follows: We open on an ISD flying through space, casting its enormous shadow on a nearby planetary body. Then the ISD gets eclipsed by the larger Resurgent, and the two are shown in a wider shot of a large fleet to really contrast them and show how the FO evolved in those 30 years of hiding. Then, a Mandator IV eclipses multiple ships, and we see Canady on its bridge, ready to jump to hyperspace. Then, as they go to leave, the Madator IV gets eclipsed itself as Snoke rejects a strategy proposed by Hux and orders him to carry out the original plan. You can't even see the entire _Supremacy_ yet. You only see that it swallows up a massive swathe of fleet.

The Executor will always be my favorite Super Star Destroyer, partly because I am partial to the original trilogy. It's dagger like aesthetics and overwhelming sense of megalomania make it one bad ass mass of space tech. That being said, there was more than enough space on the bridge area (not even counting the superstructure) to pile on scores of turbo lasers, heavier guns and ion cannons in forward, ventral, and aft positions (plus the "up" and "down" positions, keeping in mind they they are out in space) and better defend the command center. When you think about it, any small section of the ship could be as heavily armed as most warships. I don't think power would be a problem, as the reactor was supposedly almost as powerful as a small star. Perhaps its main flaw was plot weakness. :)

But SSD-s are great attack platforms-and sucks in defensive operations! If you attacks an Galaxy with an SSD, the enemy ISDs are in multiple systems, you only faced few in one time, easily kill them, and reatreats before the reinforcemens arrive. If the galaxy was attacked by 100 ISD, and the defensive forces are just one SSD, the SSD just trolled around...

James Burnett Thrawn is stupid then and doesn’t understand that larger ships pack more firepower and more power output into a more lightly crewed space. 1 Assertor is equal to about 400 ISDs in power output (thus shielding, firepower etc.) but probably only needs 300-500k crew... meanwhile 400 ISDs would require... 16,000,000 crew! And by the time 400 ISDs took down the shields of an Assertor you’d have already lost 133 ISDs, or 5,320,000 crew - which is an absolutely stupid waste of resources. Thrawn was a great tactician and had a very sharp mind, but he was absolutely awful at procurement and I think that his words are just Timothy Zahn’s ignorant bias; not what Thrawn would actually say.

They should probably have stuck with the Bellator class dreadnought. Big enough to engage fleets of Star destroyer, small enough to be mobile. A very balanced dreadnought ship that manages to cut the 3 corners of firepower, armour, mobility. Ultimately though, they would probably be better of with just ISD's. Add point defences and give the fighters some survivability and you have a VERY dangerous fleet.

The thrawn doctrine over the tarkin one. Less focus on ISD II's, more balanced ship compositions, fewer dreadnoughts and no death stars, instead invest the money in more fleets of smaller ships and better fighter bombers, like missileboats and tie defenders. Keep a core fleet of the odd SSD and some ISD's as the big hammer.

I think they are a decent idea, just the modern Imperial dreadnoughts are lacking in anti-starfighter capabilities. I get that they are supposed to be a part of a fleet, but every unit in the fleet should at least have short-range self-defence weaponry. Sure there will be the dedicated long-range anti-snubfighter ships, butbevery ship should have the ability to defend itself in a pinch.
@imperialsecuritybureau6037
@imperialsecuritybureau6037 5 лет назад
Director Orson Krennic yes it doesn’t take much power draw to slap a point defence turret on to the hull... it’s a very cheap solution to a potentially very expensive problem. These turrets are hundreds, sometimes thousands of times weaker than the big turrets, so any ship could feasibly make space for at least a few of them. The ISD-II could afford to have hundreds.

Historically, dreadnought does not refer to a role but a specific class of ship, or more a sub-class of ship. Dreadnoughts were a type of battleship named after the HMS Dreadnought which was the first battleship to utilize and all big gun main gun layout. Prior to the Dreadnought battleships had a mix of gun calibers in its main armament with a few large caliber guns mounted in turrets and smaller, faster firing guns, mounted along the sides of the hull in barbettes. Rolewise, the dreadnoughts filled the exact same role as earlier battleships as they were just a new form of battleship.

@MaddMattP90
@MaddMattP90 5 лет назад
It makes sense. Has happened on a larger scale. in TCW, the battlecruiser Quaestor, in hyperspace, collided with the Separatist planet Pammant, fracturing its core and killed millions. So a ship just entering or just about to enter hyperspace colliding with an object in realspace is possible and devastating. School time! Every object casts a 'shadow' in both realspace and hyperspace. This shadow can interact with another object no matter which dimension it is in. Also why hyperspace lanes are carefully plotted out to avoid Mass Shadows from stars and other celestial objects. In the new canon, activating a hyperdrive manipulates hypermatter particles which allows the ship to thrust into hyperspace. SO yes, a ship is still 'moving' through hyperspace, but it is perceived as traveling at extraordinary speeds in realspace. Hyperspace was a dimension of space-time alternative to that of realspace. It could only be accessed through molecular displacement, which was achieved by breaking the speed of light. It was coterminous with realspace, meaning that each point in realspace was associated with a unique point in hyperspace, and all adjacent points in realspace were adjacent in hyperspace as well.
@ZZMonkeysUncleZZ
@ZZMonkeysUncleZZ 5 лет назад
Not entirely true. While hyperspace is acknowledged as being something of another dimension, Han does mention to Luke the dangers of inaccurate hyperspace jumps, like flying into stars or planets. If hyperspace and our dimension had no interaction, there'd be no worry of that.
@richardkenan2891
@richardkenan2891 5 лет назад
@@ZZMonkeysUncleZZ Thousands of years of hyperspace travel, and nobody thought of it before. That kind of demands an explanation. My guess? Objects need to be pretty massive to interact with ships in hyperspace. Even an Executor Class or Eclipse Class isn't that big. The Supremacy was. That would reduce it from "how have you morons not figured out this tactic over the course of thousands of years of intermittent war since hyperspace became a thing," to "Man, we missed the boat on those two Death Stars, we could have dealt with them so easily if we'd though of hyper-ramming." Two missed opportunities stretches my disbelief much less than thousands of years of missed opportunities.
@Vyrexuviel
@Vyrexuviel 4 года назад
@That One RU-vidr Hyperspace is just that, a 'space'. it's a different "dimension" of normal space, one where lightspeed is effectively the /lower/ limit. it /is/ linked to normal space, but only via gravitation, and only very massive objects have enough mass to be dangerous (I'm talking stellar-scale masses here). Han's exact words were "fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your day real quick". That implies that only energy densities comparable to that of /stars/ were a large enough problem to need avoiding during a hyperspace jump. This probably explains why an Interdictor-class Star Destroyer could only keep the "yoink passing starships in hyperspace into realspace" thingies going for a short time (hours, I think? probably only minutes). My point is that jumping to hyperspace does /not/ result in any sort of a ram, unless you're pointed right at something with enough gravity to be considered at /least/ a planet, and more likely a /star/ (baring technological shenanigans like the Interdictors).

Dreadnought might not have a specific ship class meaning in Star Wars, but it certainly did in real life. It referred to the all big-gun battleship classes (note that it was battleship exclusive, battlecruisers etc did not count) starting in 1906 continuing with the super dreadnoughts until the advent of the fast battleship. It's fairly interesting history and well worth looking into. Also the caption on the USS Nevada image is wrong, the first US super dreadnoughts were the New York class (Nevada is of the following Nevada class).

Dreadnought is a specific ship ( 4:12 ). It was the first modern battleship. Its name was meant to symbolize that the British Empire had nothing to fear at sea. Its name could be used to describe a highly advanced warship but otherwise, Dreadnought = battleship.

The most famous dreadnaught the HMS dreadnaught was unique in that it focused on high speed and high range high calibre guns. Basically the idea was if you can't hit it and it can hit you and you can't catch it it can destroy as many ships as it wants before running out of ammo or the enemy ships going into port. Before effective naval bombers it was so dominant that battleships would later be classified as pre-dreadnaught or post dreadnaught. In short dreadnaught doesn't mean big ship it means big guns.

@Nargrakhan As far as I know, battlecruisers were battleship sized ships, with light armor that was supposed to make them operate at speed and range of cruisers. But better engines, guns and armor made the concept obsolete nearly instantly.

"star forge would be able to build in battle and can build newer ships" starforge wins 10/10. Seeing how fast it can churn out fleets it only needs to build droid fighters and bombers to swarm the enemy with. Also, just to speed things up, if it can build newer designs then clonewars era ships are droid controlled as well, just churn em out.

I personally believe that Star Dreadnoughts should be used like the current United States uses their Carrier Battle Groups. 1: Show the Flag- Cruise around allied systems with it's escorts and gather support by providing reassurance of safety. 2: Strategic Deterrent- Having a ship of that size with a supporting fleet near their borders is going to make an "Enemy" or "Neutral Party" think twice about doing something hostile to things you have an interest in. IE: "Are you sure you want to do that?" 3: Fleet Anchor Points- Large, well armed ships, can provide rally points and supporting fire to allied vessels in combat. 4: Large Scale Evacuation- Larger ships like Star Dreadnoughts can be used in the Worst case scenario to Evacuate large amounts of troops, (or Civilians) from a Hazard zone. 5: Industrial Might Demonstration- IE: "We can build this... We can Build More like It..." 6: Command Vessels- Large ships that are tougher then other ships with them, can serve as Fleet Flagships and be used to coordinate other ships and keep fleets Organized.

Great vid as always, explains some stuff I didn't know. While huge dreadnoughts look kick ass we have replaced them we better weapon systems in our world, smaller ships doing more damage but this was an evolution of many technologies. In sci-fi most series still don't employ some ideas from older stories, maybe the creators just haven't read enough classics or the ideas won't translate to the general audience well, they have to cater to the average intelligence and many ppl won't grasp some things, many ppl have probs grasping jump drives and any non linear transit tech. Such is the nature of entertainment. Keep up the good work !!

Most realistic: The fighters from nexus: the jupiter incident. Covered in manoeuvring thrusters (because space) and a beam laser weapon (again, space), pretty decent. The fighters in X3 have manoeuvring thrusters too, you can see them from the cockpit on some of them when you turn. Most powerful... avoiding shit like culture and xeelee (because that powerlevel is ridiculous) I'd suggest imperial Fury Interceptors from wh40k. Their tau and eldar and chaos equivalents may all be faster and more manoeuvrable or have better weapons tech but the Fury is the most durable fighter with the most guns... Inb4: the suncrusher isn't a fighter, it's an antisolar torpedo carrier. Different role.

To answer your Question of size, I would say it depends on the enemy it is supposed to fight, or force any other kind of limitting factor of your enemy. Prime example for this in our world is the Yamato class Battleship, which was supposed to force the Americans to build a bb in response that would have been too large to transfer the panama canal. It would be intereseting if there ever was some kind of resource limiting the economy of any faction. On the other hand fire power, automasation and better targeting systems, therefore better reaction time, is the key to win any battle. By the way I favor any kind of design with a spinal mounted main cannon over plastering the ship full of turrets. This has been my biggest issue over the years with the ISD. Of course you need point defense systems, but they should not be your main firepower. So if I would design a ISD and keep the wedge shape, I would give him one spinal mounted main gun, then give him many secundary broadside guns along the divide of top and bottom shape and last the point defense systems protruding from the superstructure or make the rotate out of the hull. For Hangers I like the Idea of "negative space" like valleys along the hull to lunch fighters. This would shield the hangers from direct fire and make boarding through the hangers more difficult. Oh Yeah, and build the CIC at the centre of the ship! because windows are structural weeknesses. Thanks and so long

Interesting enought, that one bigger ship are just realively cheaper than the same weight of the smaller ones...An real example:- Iowa class battleships weights as much as 57000+ tonnes, and their original price was around 120 million USD. An Fletcher class destroyer was circa 2500 ton, so 23 Fletcher equals to 1 Iowa. Price of an late-war Fletcher around 8 million USD. So 23 Fletcher costs 184 million USD! 23 Fletcher needed to 23x270(or 350)=6210(or even 8050!!!) crewmember. Crew of an Iowa=2700 men. So if you have manpower and money shortage, bigger ships are most effective...Of couse, 23 Fletcher have 23 gun directing radar system, an Iowa have 4 sets, and 23 Fletcher was much more HP in their turbine sets, than on Iowa machinery power...- Charles de Gaulle class nuclear aircraft carriers costs 2,6 billion, and Nimitz class ships in the 90s are costs 4 billion. (If i remember correctly...) 1,5xprice, but the ships are 2,5 times bigger! Steel are cheap, electronics and weapon systems are not... If you have for exaple 8 long range AA missile, you need the same radar system and fire controll computer, and the same number of trained weapon system officiers, as if you have 32 such missiles...

Just to be random yet stay in the lines of spaceships. Earth needs the Daedalus cruisers (fully upgraded one)from stargate. Can travel to another galaxy in months rather then years. Has enough firepower to fight far larger vessels and win. Shields that can take alot of punishment. Weapons ranging from auto rail guns that can destroy capital size ships yet accurate enough to hit fighter size ships, beam weapons that tear through shields and armor a like, and nukes that have been boosted to be far stronger than any nuke developed in today's age. And can deploy fighters that are dangerous to fighters and capital ships. And beaming technology that they can bypass shields and put a nuke in side an enemy vessel destroying them from the inside out
@tba113
@tba113 5 лет назад
Agreed, the BC-304's were pretty awesome. Their point defenses - the high-ROF railguns - were accurate and powerful enough that they could, in the right circumstances, cripple the five-kilometer-long Wraith hive ships. The Asgard beam cannons could one-shot hive ships with no trouble, and make even Ori warships think twice. Mk. IX naquadria-enhanced warheads, commonly mounted on guided missiles in the 304s' VLS tubes, apparently come in at the ten-gigaton yield, making them _vastly_ more powerful than the heavy weapons in almost any non-40K setting; by comparison, based on the 3kg warhead used in Starfleet photon torpedoes, they have a yield of about 65 megatons. Not bad at all - the biggest nuclear weapon of the 20th century, the Czar Bomba, had a test yield of "only" about fifty MT - but the Mk. IX's blast is about 154 times as powerful as a photon torpedo. The only drawback is how slow the conventional missile technology is when delivering a warhead over long distances. The Daedalus-class's typical complement of F-302 fighters, already formidable in their own right with just cannons and guided missiles, can apparently also mount one of those death-bombs - though they have to sacrifice most of the rest of their ordnance to do it. So far as I know, the only strike craft in Star Wars that had any external hardpoints was the K-Wing, and as awesome as it was, it only showed up in Legends. Good luck hanging any specialist equipment on an X-Wing without rebuilding half the fighter! The 304's shields could scale with however much energy was routed to them; one ship tanked a solar flare for several minutes, something that vaporized a Borg cube more or less instantly. The 304's transporter technology is better than that used in Star Trek, too, since it can achieve a lock on a moving target with only a radio beacon to work with - though it's not perfect, and can be jammed by active countermeasures. That's another thing I miss in a lot of sci fi, actually: electronic warfare to screw with sensors and communications gets almost no play outside of the occasional cloaking device, and as cool as they are, those are really just stealth suites. They do nothing to help the rest of a ship's task force.

@@armycowboy4313 With their advantages in mobility and firepower, yeah, pretty much. And since the Asgard- and Goa'uld-based hyperdrives don't worry about mass shadows like Star Wars hyperdrives do - they've jumped directly through planets, a flat impossibility in Star Wars - it's not like the Empire could ambush a fleet of 304's with Interdictors. Every engagement would be on the Tau'ri's terms, which makes for a lot of easy fights. And I'd take SG teams over Stormtroopers any day.

@phoenixx913
@phoenixx913 5 лет назад
@@armycowboy4313 Um no that's not happening lol. The imperial Navy at least in the EU had a navy of millions of warships and trillions of personal, not to mention that the weapons had ridiculous range and power. A clone wars era Acclamator is a more fair fight to be honest since it was equiped with the following. 12 quad turbolasers rated at 200 gigatons of energy per shot. 24 light point-defense laser cannons rated at 6 gigatons of energy per shot 4 heavy torpedo tubes 100 high-yield proton torpedos On top of that the hull armor of Acclamator-class vessels was impregnated with ultra-dispersive neutronium that withstood and spread massive energy blasts. So that would severely weaken both the nukes and the beam cannons. And then it also had deflector shields which protect against both energy and kinetic weapons thus nullifying the railguns. Also those Asgard Beam Cannons aren't that special in the Star Wars Universe regular turbolasers and lasers fire compressed bolts of superheated plasma, same for the beam cannons in star wars, same as the ones in stargate, even the railguns and nukes aren't special because star wars has nukes as well, and railguns also coil and gauss guns and slugthrowers(guns) and eletrothermal cannons(plasma driven projectile weapons)
