The Evolution of the Supermodel I Documentary
From Jean Shrimpton to Gigi Hadid. In this video, you will learn about the history and evolution of the supermodels from different periods of time. This is one of the videos I've always wanted to make, and I finally got the time to it. I hope you all enjoy it.
Quick note: There are a couple of grammar errors here and there in the video, sorry about that, my english and seeing are not perfect :). Also, I want to acknowledge some factual errors: Liu Wen wasn't the first asian model to walk for VS, she was the first chinese model to do so. I confused the terms when I was doing the script. And Wilhelmina doesn’t hold the record of having the most Vogue US covers anymore, but for a long time she did that’s why It appeared during my research but yeah, it’s outdated (I believe Lauren Hutton is the one holding it now), sorry about those things.

Quick note: There are a couple of grammar errors here and there in the video, sorry about that, my english and seeing are not perfect :). Also, I want to acknowledge some factual errors: -Liu Wen was the first chinese (not asian) model to walk for VS, I confused the terms when I was doing the script. -Iman is technically african but Alek Wek is the first model to be embraced by the industry for being african and having strong features. For me, nothing will top the 1988-1993 era supermodels. Linda, Naomi, Christy, Yasmeen, Cindy, Claudia, Helena, Karen, Carla, Tatjana etc. These women define the term supermodel in every sense, from their faces to their personalities.

Really nice look at the history of models! Linda, Kate and the last supermodel Gisele had a huge influence on the industry, having the most impact from the late 80s onwards, I like how you ended on Quinn Mora who actually has personality and smiles on the runway.

THE SUPERS: The big 8 includes Yasmeen Ghauri and Tyra Banks. Tyra made the best debut, a record for 25 fashion shows. Those walks alongside with Naomi’s slayed back in the 90s and still relevant to this day. Lit the most influential supermodels of them all!

There is nothing super about models today. Kendal Jenner just happens to be lucky enough to be related to Kim Kardashian. Other famous models today are the daughters of someone famous or have been featured on reality shows. No thanks. When you talk about Supermodel you mean the models from the 80s/90s like Linda,Christy, Claudia etc. They deserve all the respect and accolades

The video is very accurate the industry is being dominated by African decent models but in the media it looks like kendall, gigi and bella are the top girls. Kendall being the highest paid is literally down to her family ties that's it

For my part I'm so happy this clip recognized the true pioneers of modeling. Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton, Veruschka. Especially Twiggy was a model who defined a decade. She was so big that Mattel honored her with a Barbie " Twiggy doll" I know because my mom bought it for me. It looked just like her.

The first time the "Supermodel" was mentioned was about George Michael's "Freedom"-video, because the acting models became absoutely famous; I think, there were some missing, but you couldn't get them all for in the early 90's, there were many real glorious models: Nadja Auermann (longest legs), Tatjana Patitz and Helena Christensen (bombshell) etc. I remember as well that Iman was called a "Megamodel" because she was able to do every style of walk and always was marvelous. Very Accurate! Congratulations! But you have made 2 small mistakes: Claudia Shiffer was on Elle and Grazia's cover in 1987, and in 1990 she was already a STAR. The second, really super-small, oversight was the graphic NEX instead of NEXT GENERATION. Thanks for your trustworthy resume, you have been really correct in your indications. I know it because I follow High fashion since at least 1980, buing my first glossies and a few items the year after, when I was 16, this is why I remember all that you have written...

Great video, although some things are not right. For example- Claudia Schiffer didn't debut in 1990. She was featured in many European edit of Elle magazine in 1988. Also Lisa Fonssagrives, a Swedish model, married to legeandary photographer Irving Penn is widely credited with having been the first supermodel. And some other minor stuff missing in the video. But overall a really great video and accurate description of the evolution! Well done 👏🏽

Interesting video. Of course there was a lot of overlap and it’s not as cut-and-dry as is suggested here but it’s still cool to see it in a “timeline” like this. It would have been nice to see the 1950s era represented more as they really are the true firsts. I also don’t agree that all these women post-early 00s were supermodels. A “working model” or “successful model” does not mean “supermodel”. There were a few mentioned who genuinely reach that status but many mentioned or shown have not. However, like it or not, the Jenner, Hadids and Gerber girls are probably the closest thing to “supers” we’ve seen since the early days of Giselle. People know their names and all the big houses & companies use them.

@ 11:40 .... Liu Wen was NOT the First Asian Model to walk the Victoria's Secret Show. Ling Tan was the very first full asian model to walk the Victoria's Secret Show in 1996. Natane Adcock who's half Chinese walked the very first Victoria's Secret Show in 1995. Great video by the way. 😊

So many names I've never heard of. Of course I know the Jenner girl, she has a very famous father. The Gisele one was married to the gorgeous Tim Brady. The best of the walkways was Evangelista. The face of beautiful was frozen into my mind when I was a child: Jean Shrimpton has never been replaced. However, for sentimentality, how can I ignore the most glamorous of them all, the queen of Vogue Magazine covers, Lauren Hutton. Funny, classy, smart, talented, opinionated, and magically, relevant longer than any other.
