Maungatautari Mountain - Sanctuary Mountain Maugatautari - Ecological Island This Waikato must-do Maunga has many names. Outdoorsman Dave takes a camera-shy, complete stranger on Maungatatautari’s Over the Mountain Track. We are immersed in birdsong (See below, the best I’ve ever experienced) in what was sometimes challenging but always beautiful native bush. An off-track adventure goes badly, resulting in abandoning the mission and a slow and painful hike. A visit to A&E that night revealed it was a fractured ankle. Will Dave capture the most elusive creature on camera on Sanctuary Mountain, his mysterious friend…Willie?
What was that bird?
This channel aims to help teach rather than provide mere entertainment, so with the assistance of Craig Montgomerie, the birds heard in the video at the time slots below have been identified as the following...

6:30 Tieke / Saddleback

Very cool video all the excitement and all. Willie definitely not slow because he's under cooked ...I'm so proud of him walking out with a fractured ankle.❤

Thanks Anita, it’s a hard one, personally I would have appreciated knowing what level of pain he was in so we could consider all options if need be like taking the easier Wairere track or make up a splint to transfer the weight to it rather than onto his ankle etc. Suspect he didn’t want to seem a burden but yes, he was certainly a good sport and is one tough cookie, we didn’t know (to the point of him driving the car home) that it was actually a fracture. He was wearing his glasses at the off track creek crossing but I literally don’t have any facial shots after that to know when he actually lost them. I’m sure you make a good nurse, take good care of him, all my love, Dave 🙏

Seeing and hearing what is out there is what it's all about. That is one of the reasons I go alone so often. A complete kit for self care is so important. My kit has had the cooperation of my physician so I have everything covered. An interesting track you followed and I'm glad your friend managed to get out. Not an easy task with injury! Thanks Dave!

Thanks, you have just reminded me I need to go and put a pencil in my safety kit as so often I get to huts and there’s no pen to write hike intentions in the book, it’s something we do here in New Zealand.

@@OutdoorsmanDave We do it in our huts as well but the days of calling and getting into a hut are over. Nowadays it is pretty much a drawing to get into huts. That is why I pull a sled and have a tent with a wood stove. It used to be like NZ prices but now it's like a 5 star hotel. At least from my point of view but then what do I know.🤣

It’s getting a bit like that here on popular tracks, hence my preference to go to more remote areas.

Funny. I had this one on my list for a while and nearly did it just before your vid came out. Did it on a blue sky day today but kind of in reverse- started at Hicks Road (parking is at the Marae rather than the road end where it used to be and where Willie was picked up), up to Maungatautiri and Pukeatua for cooked lunch via the Te Raki, and back down the Wairere quad bike track. Large frost patch at the summit of Pukeatua- doesn't look like it ever gets the sun at the moment, and a constant climb on the Wairere until the saddle and then constant descent down to the fence. For anyone who is interested, the section from Maungautiri summit to Pukeatua and then back down to the Wairere quad bike track is steep and rooted and will keep people on their toes and for me was around 5.5hrs walking time and 15.8km with 900m total ascent. A fun day out, thanks for posting. Btw, that was a Saddleback- the old rusty steel wheeled squeaky wheelbarrow wheel bird. Heaps of them up there.

Thanks for visiting my work Dave. Your bird ID could do with some work lol. The bird you thought was a kaka was a tieke (saddleback). The the birds you thought we Robin's were popokatea (white head). Perhaps some time I could take you to see the real maungatautari

Hi Dave, at around the 12 min mark, that is a Saddleback or Tieke, they have a really distinctive call.

Also, with the markers, there's a lot of pest monitoring lines/tracks. I go with my Dad every now and then to put out or collect pest monitoring cards to check what's going on. The track we do is about a 5 hour trek, lots of bushbashing involved. And the birdlife is fantastic.

Yup saddleback and with the kokako the only two native wattle birds left in NZ. The 3rd wattlebird native to NZ was the huia which was hunted to extinction by Buller.
