At the end of the Second World War, there was a gallows inside of Landsberg Prison which was very busy executing the guards of Dachau Concentration Camp. Many of these men were known for execution, brutality and torture and they were executed themselves by an American executioner.

"American hangings were barbaric" said Albert Pierrepoint, Britain's chief executioner. He specialised in getting the condemned hooded, bound, noosed and through the trap in about 60 seconds. The Yanks took about 20 mins - a carnival atmosphere of legalese, religion and last words - torture really for the prisoner. Pierrepoint despised that. He should know; in addition to many Brits, he hanged hundreds of convicted Nazi war criminals and - as a contractor to the US Army - more than 20 American GIs at wartime leased Shepton Mallet prison in England.
