Growing up in a Catholic family I wasn't allowed to watch this movie, and when I finally saw it as an adult I was blown away. It is truly masterful in every aspect. I can't imagine what was going through people's minds during the "let Jesus fuck you" scene lol.

i was only 1 when this came out, damn! Jason Miller as Damien Karras has to be the perfect cast EVER! he gets even better in Exorcist III. i had thought the hospital procedure was a spinal tap. not sure. theaters usually show this every October, so get out there people!

I also seen this Jason in the theater when they did the re release for the version you have never seen and it was an awsome experience seeing it on the big screen and the weird thing was is that the theater was basically empty beside me and a couple of my friends and maybe 5 to 10 other people which added to the creep factor lol. Excellent review bud as always and cant wait to see ur thoughts on Exorcist 3 which is highly underrated and a film I like way more than the original which Brad dourif should have gotten an oscar for his performance as the Gemini killer cause wow what a performance.

You are seriously correct on that subject. The 70's came out and placed horror movies on a pedestal. 1968 saw Rosemary's baby. But the following decade gave us these badass gems. The excorst. The Omen one and two. Race against the devil. Dawn of the dead.phantasm. alien. Scanner's. The hills have eyes. Texas chainsaw massacre. Halloween. The devil's rain. Burnt offering. Check out that last one.

The demon should have mostly spoken in Babylonian, Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, or some made-up demon speech. Having it speak in English, even vulgar English, takes me out of it. It doesn't seem as alien, but more like a twisted human.

Jason, I completely agree about the points made here on the horror genre overall. As a horror fanatic, I often have discourse on matters of this genre and agree with you about the 70s horror films being in a sense better than 80s horror (and this is said even tho I love EVERYTHING 80s). 70s horror had zero comic relief and silly one-liners like we saw in the 80s slasher films and kept the element of the genre dark. Yes, you are right- it faded when the 80s came in and we really haven't (or rarely ever have) seen it since.

~ About "Tubular Bells." Mike Oldfield wrote/recorded that long before, and Virgin Records (new record company at the time) had it in their vault, but it wasn't likely to be released. Friedkin wanted some kind of creepy, atmospheric music, not necessarily mainstream, asked for some of their product, and found that. The rest is history.

Great review as always. That's an interesting take on the 80s being the starting point where horror declined. I'm not sure if I agree or disagree. I do think there are great/amazing horror movies and ones that are terrible in every decade, but I'm not sure if I can agree if the 80s was the start of the decline. I'll have to check more 80s horror out to see if I agree or not though. Other than the Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th franchise installments, do you have any 80s horror I can check out?

The medical procedures in the film tended to be what the majority of the squeamish feedback came from. Yes, people were shocked by the sacreligious imagery, and the supernatural implications, but the one thing that had everyone turning their stomach was the procedure where they inserted a catheter into her carotid artery. The horror of medical procedures in the 70s, and how loud, cold, uncaring and sterile the environment is. That resonates with believers and non-believers alike

@ 26:21, It's implied that Regan did. Because of that short scene in the beginning where she is sculpting stuff from clay. Plus, it resembled the Pazuzu statue, with the snake-headed bulge.

In the very beginning of the film, Chris wakes up hearing the noises in the attic and goes to Regan's bedroom. When she gets in, the window is open. In the novel, she hits her foot or something on a piece of furniture that was in the wrong place (I don't remember if that happens in the movie). So, yes, the noises are things being moved around, which I think is a sign of demonic possession (we see that in the scene with the crucifix, where Regan's things are being thrown around by "no one", with the chair closing the door and the wardrobe almost crushing Chris). Also, it was Regan who vandalized the church. We don't see that, but it's implied. When Regan and Chris are in the basement, Regan shows her mom the artsy bird she made, which is painted and not dry yet. We know Regan makes art, because the detective asks Chris in the kitchen about the small pieces of art he sees by the window and Chris says Regan made them. We can clearly see in the church that the material used on the statue has paint and a sort of clay thing look on it.

So you said something about the scenes in the TV version of Halloween being cut for time...they were actually filmed by Carpenter when the crew was in town filming Halloween II cuz NBC was airing Halloween at the time and they needed additional scenes to pad the running time...Carpenter refers to filming those scenes as "yep...I ho'd out..." lol

I saw it in theaters at that time also. Probably 3 times. I saw it like a couple years ago, took an older friend who had never seen it. I was expecting the spider walk but the editing was so jarring that it freaked me out. Even though I had seen it so many times. It is a masterpiece. It happens and the second they show her face it cuts immediately to silence. Leaving you frazzled. Once I was watching it. And there was one of those super silent moments. And a friend of mine knocked on the door really hard and loud as a joke. SCARED THE LIVING CRAP OUTTA ME.

Great review! Wasn't raised in a religious family but that film really pushed the bar in mainstream cinema at the time and was one of the most shocking movies I had seen when I was a kid. Here's some trivia on the spider walk scene( I do relate to why you think that scene was originally removed) "The infamous scene of a possessed Regan spider-walking down the stairs and then doing lewd things to the houseguests was filmed using a real contortionist, but it never made the final cut of the movie when it was first released. Director William Friedkin did not like the quality of the scene because you could see the wires that suspended the contortionist. It was included in later versions of the film when, with the help of CGI, the wires were removed from the shots. Some horror experts argue that the spider walk scene should never be included because it’s the only instance when Regan leaves her room."

What if pazuzu's like the obvious suspect in a mystery and Reagan was actually responding to sexual abuse from Burk? She's mad at the church for not protecting her and is healed when she sees these priests giving so much to help her. It'd explain the long opening sequence, to throw you off another possibility.

@@sinistercinemareviews5420 I'll tell you one thing for now....the scene in which Regan is sprinkled with the fake holy water (by the way, that was the demon messing with Karras' mind because of his temporary weak faith). When she speaks backwards...if you record that actual part yourself & play it backwards yourself there are 2 lines in it that you don't hear later on when Karras is playing it for the sound tech and we, the audience, find out its English in reverse. Those two lines are, "I see you" & "It is warm in the body". And trust me, they are CREEPY as Hell!
