PLEASE READ before commenting... Hey gang, so I've had a bunch of idiotic and disrespectful comments from people saying that all of this stuff has been available for years and is on the DVD/Blu-Ray releases OR is on RU-vid. Let me make this clear, not ALL of this is new. I know that, and do make a point of saying that in the video. However, the multiple FULL takes of the Washington trip and FULL alternate takes of other sequences have NOT been released on any home media version of THE EXORCIST since the first snapcase in 1997. Believe me, I have EVERY version of this film released. You get snippets of the Washington sequence in both the Fear of God documentary and The Different Versions of The Exorcist featurette, but full unedited takes have never bee put out there. The Karras/Merrin alternate takes - only two were included on previous releases - including the one where William Friedkin yells. The Kinderman and Dyer ending. The last piece where the dialogue is played WAS on the 1998 DVD and ever subsequent release, but the two alternate two shot takes of them talking without sound was not. I added the version with sound so that those who maybe don't have the DVD can hear the dialogue I was talking about in the commentary. The same goes for the Eileen Dietz makeup test. It's never been included on ANY release. To say to me that it has been out there for years is just ludicrous. There is a brief glimpse in the opening credits of Fear of God, and a brief shot of the clapper board in front of Dietz's face in the Raising Hell featurette. That is it. I've been obsessed with this film since 1998. I know what's been put out there and what hasn't, so telling me that I'm wrong or that I should be ashamed for saying this is new stuff - I wouldn't have posted this video if I didn't KNOW I had some footage that was significant, and didn't have to post it at all. I posted it because I wanted to share the stuff that I know isn't out there. As for how I 'suddenly woke up and had all this footage', I posted an Exorcist related video over a month ago on my other RU-vid channel. A day after posting it there was a comment in my 'Approve before posting' tab. It was a megaupload link with a comment saying "This may interest you." I downloaded it. Saw what it was and went back to ask the user where they got it from. By the time I got back the comment had been deleted. It's since been brought to my attention that someone uploaded all this stuff to a torrent site around the same time, which is a good explanation for how the person who sent me the link could have obtained it. Having shown snippets to Mark Kermode, he thinks its possible that given the 4:3 ratio and VHS quality, that these have been ripped from a tape that was used in the production of his documentary back in 1998. So when I say 'I don't know how I have this footage' it's purely from the shock of being sent it in the first place and not knowing who or why it was sent to me. The majority of your comments have been absolutely lovely, and I'm glad that you're enjoying the video. I want this to be a place for positive and engaging interaction. I have ZERO patience for disrespectful comments or negativity for the sake of being negative, and those who do post negative comments will immediately be silenced from the channel with no warning. Let's keep it friendly. x

Very much enjoyed your insight and appreciation for the craft that went into filming The Exorcist. Your perspective was more enjoyable than looking at 5 minutes snips without any context on RU-vid. With respect, it is Eileen Dietz in the scene with the oversized crucifix and the stabbing motions. There is no way Linda would have been allowed to make such violent movements with that huge cross towards her pubic area. Not from the sexual aspect, but more of a safety concern.

Interesting vid I myself saw some of the footage in this video but you brought a lot of unseen material so, thanks for sharing that. Great job. There are millions of ppl today who just want to wrong someone always be right and undermine something for their own selfish reasons, driven by envy or the lack of knowledge and ofc the fear of ridicule for just not knowing nobody wants to look stupid. Justification on your part isn't necessary. My dad taught us to ignore stupidity and just let them run their mouths. In today's world, we have those idiots who can seek refuge in the comfort of their home hiding behind a keyboard, pretending to be something they fantasize about being. They will never say it directly to your face. So let them be weak and miserable. Perhaps you can do some content on the scenes filmed at fordham university (hughes hall) and the aftermath of the strange occurrences that plague the campus today. Particularly at Keating and Findley Halls as well. I was 15 when The Exorcist was released, about 10 of us from the hood went and stood on line in the freezing cold for 2 hours at a local bronx movie theater, it was the talk of the projects. As tough as I was back then, i admit, the movie scared the shit out of me. Peace.

If the deleted scenes, especially Regan's Birthday trip were included, Linda Blair would have been seen more as a genuine actress at the time. I think that the normal Regan part of the film was avoided too much. She could have beat Tatum O'Neal as Best Supporting Actress that year.
@blerksnarfgut2766
@blerksnarfgut2766 10 месяцев назад
I totally agree! In the movie, Regan is little more than a prop/victim whom we don't really get to know much at all, and we don't get the opportunity to connect with her on an emotional level the way we do with Chris and Father Karras. Linda had so much charisma in these deleted Washington monument tour scenes, and we see how Regan was so very innocent- way different from the possessed monster she would become. Also, the bond between Regan and Chris is highlighted wonderfully in these moments; you really get a sense that they're not just mother and daughter, but that they're one another's favorite person. This would have made the possession all the more horrifying, traumatizing and tragic. I've never seen Paper Moon with Tatum O'Neal, but I can't imagine her performance could have been close to deserving the Oscar over Linda's.
@loren7551
@loren7551 27 дней назад
I agree too.There are hardly any scenes in the theatrical cut where Regan is seen being normal and hardly any scenes where she stars to act strangely before she is completely possessed.The original cut of the movie showed a lot more of these scenes.Too bad Friedkin was pressured into cutting a lot of interesting scenes.

two weeks after the opening in LA, i was hired at the phoenix az theater, to work as a parapsychologist, to help people that got sick, or freaked out during the movie.... so i had to view the exorcist about 400 times. in every showing, there were nervous giggles after the crucifix scene and such...BUT after the "help me" appeared on megan's stomach, there was no more sounds from the audience. EVER...i called it adrenaline overload. ... a lot of people went into shock, and couldn't respond any further....this movie, back then,.. tore a lot of people's psyche's apart, at least for the duration of the movie......oh, i did help a lot of people who fainted, threw up or freaked out, and had to call for the emts a few times...there has been no other movie to do that to people, not at that level......loved that i got to experience that phenomenon in my life........ also in the book, regan did snake like moves, there was never a spider scene in the book.

Let’s put it this way…. I was as.a 12 year old, able to watch The Exorcist on VHS in the UK before it became a banned film. It did the rounds on late night shows in cinemas in the early 90s. Any opportunity I had to watch this film, I took it. This is the only film that scared me so much, that it made me sleep with the lights on. It’s still shocking to watch it today. I can say that not many films have had this profound impact.

I actually said the same thing. I absolutely believe it has its place in the film, but I would've placed it much later. You don't have to cut the scene cause it's out of place, a good director knows how to use it at a later time in the story. I always felt the dialogue about "that thing up there isn't my daughter", where Chris says Reagan sounds like herself but isn't her. It's so out of place and weird, when clearly Reagan sounds nothing like Reagan and she took on personalities like Burke and spoke in an accent. That bit of dialogue should've never been included imho. She stops sounding like herself pretty early on and the way she sounds and uses other people's voice is what messed up with Karl and Karras. So why would Chris say that..

@@twistedelegance_,you heard her dialogue wrong what Chris said was”you show me Regans double ,same face same voice everything and I know it wasn’t Regan,I know in my gut,I’m telling you that thing upstairs isn’t my daughter,,,”,not only is this scene powerful but when she said “that thing upstairs isn’t my daughter “ it send chills,because she realises the truth,love this scene

Billy yelling, "Shut up in there!" comes directly from him watching Det. Eddie Egan while working on The French Connection. Egan, during the bar raids would yell "Shut up over there!" when bar patrons were whispering, letting them know nothing is getting by the detective. Gene Hackman recreated the line in the movie, and Friedkin found it a useful tool for jarring unsuspecting film crew and keeping control on a set.

I do have to be honest: once I listened to the Exorcist 40th anniversary edition audiobook, read by Blatty himself I haven't seen the film in the same light again. Compared to the book it seems extemely rushed. Even tho the film is over 2 hours long it feels like it jumps ahead way too fast and doesn't give the viewers time to take it all in and breathe before jumping ahead. Also, the film really did Merrin dirty most of all. In the book he is there for nearly a week, and gives lots of insight into who he is. Even when he dies, Pazuzu pleads with Karras and asks him to revive Merrin so he can kill Reagan in front of him and make him lose his faith. In the film I always felt like Merrin was presented as this overpowered superhuman who just came there to die. All that build up and meh.
@Oneanddone14
@Oneanddone14 9 месяцев назад
Good point. I also understand Friedkin wanting as much turnover as possible at the theaters. I don't feel it is rushed. It is still a slow-burn horror film. Ironically, young people today think it is a very slow film. Not rushed, but not as full and detailed as the book. 2 changes could work within the theatrical-cut length - 2:02 or 2:03 ....I agree with your Merrin comments. With my magic editing wand, I would have Regan yell at Karris to revive Merrin, etc. And when Karris and Merrin are on the staircase, after Karris asks why her, it doesn't make sense, Merrin should have said, "Yes, it does.....The demon doesn't want her, he wants me."

To this day, i wonder and get a little creeped at: 1.) the actual circumstances of how Burk Dennings was killed. Did Reagan call him to her room, or did she go downstairs and "get him" then take him back upstairs? 2.) Living and SLEEPING in a house with a person possessed by a demon just a few feet away, separated by walls. The sounds or horrible moaning one might hear. 3.) Was it Reagan who desecrated the church?
@harlhequim
@harlhequim Месяц назад
Agree. The Burk Dennings killing remains one of the most disturbing part of the movie for one reason, its not shown. So your mind complete the scene with the extrene elements of what scares you. Also add, when Karras enters the room and finds Merrin death and Reagan grinning. The actual killing is not shown, so your mind again goes overboard

I watched a clip of a Q&A with Friedkin and Bursten, and he says that when he was interviewing Blair prior to her taking the role, he asked her about the book. She said she'd read it, and when he asked her about some of the bad things that happen in the story, she mentioned the masterbation with the crucifix. So it's probably fair to say that she knew what she was supposed to be doing with it during those makeup tests :)

Great video, and brilliant commentary as well. I just watched all the Exorcist movies up to Believer and its great to get some background footage for the original. Thanks again for uploading this.

Thanks also for telling it straight about at the spider walk. Even if it was executed better than it was, it make no sense coming where it does. You wouldn't witness that and then move to hypnosis as the next step. It's SO much better to give Chris a double concern in the hypnosis scene, which is whether it will reveal anything about Burke's death.

Great explanation Mr. Paul Davis, I am an obsessor of the original 1973 movie the exorcist, and have been since I was 12 years old when I saw it, I waited for what seemed like an eternity for some sort of release to TV at that time, which would have had a bunch of commercials, thank GOD for VHS, DVD, BR, and now 4K, I have all of these in those media that were released. I really enjoyed your "unseen outtakes", and the way you explained it. So now this so-called trilogy that david gordon released really ruined the spirit of the movie, it will never be classed as a continuation of the original, because it didn't make any sense. Now the next part is called the deceiver, it will only make sense to the trilogy and have nothing to do with the original exorcist. Great job sir!!

Well done! I agree with you (and Billy Friedkin, ha) about the spider walk staircase sequence - it doesn't belong. Though to me the problem is the lighting. The lighting is so wonderful throughout the film; it is always so clear what the ostensible on-screen light source is within each scene. But on the staircase, I don't know where the light is coming from - seemingly all over. It is too bright in general and just doesn't have the same look as the other interior shots of the home. It looks like a movie set. Though the shots where Blair is poised-to-strike at the foot of the stairs, with the tongue-flicking - too bad they couldn't use that somehow, maybe re-filmed for a different sequence, because it is horrifying. The quickness of the movement is so lizard-like and the way she darts forward like an animal- just uncanny. Superb performance by Blair. Weren't all contact lenses glass or hard acrylic back then? I thought flexible contact lenses only became a thing in the 1980s. IIRC from back then there were still kids whose prescriptions were such that they could only wear the hard lenses.Or were these lenses used for theatrical effects something else?

It was actually included in the Fear of God bonus feature on the 2000 version and the new 4k boxset also. It's not unseen unfortunately. For some reason I thought it was put back the Director's Cut version and even asked my hubby where is that scene. Then I remember it was only in the bonus features lol

1. The lenses Linda wore are called scleral shells. I wore one when I had eye surgery. They are indeed made of acrylic. If they're properly polished, they shouldn't be too uncomfortable. But if she had to wear them for more than a few hours at a time, they could be annoying. If she had to constantly put them in and take them out, that would definitely irritate the eyes even more. 2. I liked the quiet moment by the stairs. It adds a respite from all the intensity in the bedroom. It also helps the audience identify with the priests a bit more and what they are going through. The audience is probably also wondering: "why this girl?" 3. Question: The scene where Linda is crawling down the stairs and flicking her tongue, is that a prosthetic tongue? It seems quite long.
@thekesslerboy

It was indeed a prosthetic tongue created and applied by Dick Smith.

I love this video, Paul. You have a new subscriber! I'll add, there's no reason to risk puting glass contacts in a child's eyes these days. All this could be done to exactly the same level with VFX. It might be a good idea to use some form of more comfortable effect-related contact to help inform the actor, much like costumes do in general, but to then enhance the practical effect to make it look more extreme, as it does here. Again, great video!

Oh I know, there would be absolutely no reason to subject the cast to ANYTHING they went through on this thanks to digital technology. Just another reason why the film feels special. Everything is there on set. Was just musing hypothetically more than anything 😊

Oh, for sure. I still lament the loss of some of the guerrilla filmmaking that used to happen back in the day, and the risks people would take, but with age, I've become so much more safety oriented working on-set that I compartmentalize, and not just the subject matter of a film to being "of a time," but also the filmmaking processes themselves. I look forward to your AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON piece. (John gave me my BluRay copy. We talked about it a lot. 😉)@@thekesslerboy

I've read so many conflicting stories about the crucifix scene. Blair has said she didn't know it was a masturbation scene with a crucifix, while Friedkin has said when Blair auditioned, even at 10 years old, had said she had read the book and knew what the character was doing. And another where the masturbation scene was not Linda Blair at all, and it was actually Eileen Dietz, who also played the face of Pazuzu.

Always heard of the outtakes through the 1980's and was curious, but when sewn into the film and released as The Version You Never Saw, can understand Friedkin's choice and forever a fan of the 1973 theatrical release as it's definitive cut/version.

What needs to be explored more in discussion and commentary is how the film resonates differently with Christians, especially Catholics vs non believers. They always insisted that this is not a horror film but rather a film about spirituality. But for those of us who do not believe this demon is no more scary to us than Pinhead is in the Hellraiser films. Itr is a much better film obviously. The demon is a fictional character. The real evil in the world is out there in people like Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgeway.

It's a shame they had to leave a lot of Kinderman's scenes out as he investigated Dennings murder. The best was him following Karl and discovering his daughter-who Willie thought was dead-was still alive and an addict. I understand there was no room for it, but it throws in 'detective story' as yet another amazing aspect of the novel.

William Friedkin and William Peter Blatty didn’t taper for years because William Friedkin didn’t add the scene of them on the stairs.

I prefer the melancholic ending of the theatrical cut to Blatty’s preferred addition in the re-release. Dyer and Kinderman bumping into each other and talking about films is just too cutesy for The Exorcist.
