In the books he's a bit part who I think appears in exactly one scene, and not a particularly good one. For all intents and purposes he's a TV-original character.
Just take a moment and appreciate what a great actor Tarabay is. He really made you hate him in Spartacus and look at him here. Really loved this character and the sassy interactions between him, Chrisjen and Bobbie. Sad to see him go, but he went out a hero.
"Good job, marine" "Same to you, spy" That's one of my favorite pieces of dialogue in the whole show. They could (hopeflly) make 9 seasons and it would still be in my top 3
Superb comparison, I never thought of it like that but you're exactly right. Now I'm going to have start thinking of other 1 to 1 character comparisons. Like obviously Holden is Jon Snow in space. Bobbie Draper is the sci-fi version of Brienne. Tyrion and Amos both sneak up on you to become the character that no one expected to become their absolute favorite. Avasarala and Oleanna Tyrell are both deft political power players with sharp tongues...
You don't even see Bronn in the books but his last in person scene (as of now) was his scene in Tyrion's cell. But you do hear about what he gets up to after the fact.
He went out, like a boss, in service to the human race...and there will be no accolades nor fanfares for his sacrifice, save in the hearts and minds of those that were closest to him at the end. ...And he, consummate spy that he is, wouldn't have it any other way... Godspeed, agent Ghazi, your debt is repaid. You are now free from the politics and intrigues that ensnared you in life... Take your well-deserved rest.
You summed up most of the reasons why I liked Cotyar. Another reason for me is the odd-couple chemistry between him and Chrisjen. I'll miss that most of all going ahead.
This character needed a tribute as beautiful as this. You nailed it. I don't think i'll ever get over it if this show get's cancelled. You are helping to bring more people into the movement of saving this show through these videos. Amazing job
Yep, along with Drummer and Amos, he was one of my favorites. Shame to see him go, but awesome way to punch out. Reminder that sometimes even the best are dealt a loser of a hand!
@@gfarrell80 Or he was exactly where he needed to be in the right moment. Without him being on that ship at that time those mutinys might not have happened. Without him being there the Agatha King might have been boarded eventually. I prefer to look at his death as a good life.
His sacrifice and courageous death would not be remembered, so many say. Cotyar would have not had it any other way, folks. What a show. What a character. Bravo to this incredible edit.
What an amazing character. Great actor by the way. He's been lucky enough to play a part in the two best shows ever made, The Expanse and Spartacus. Respect. #SaveTheExpanse
he was great in both shows, that is why I was skeptical of his character in the expanse, compared to Ashur. But he stayed loyal to Chrissie until his death
I don't think I realized until watching this just how much time Cotyar spends simply *reassuring people* - not just Avasarala, everyone, down to the lowliest grunts he already knows have no chance of surviving the nightmare they've found themselves in. It's a really subtle bit of character writing, but I love it. RIP spook, you will be missed.
I first saw Nick E. Tarabay in Spartucus. He played a very hate-able person. He was fantastic. I was so thrilled to see him show up in The Expanse. Such an amazing actor. Can't wait to see him show up in another great show. Hopefully, they won't kill him off in it.
As usual, amazing job Zurik! You added even more epicness to this already great (and amazingly acted) character. I really wished he'd live longer, he was just getting better and better with every episode, rip.
I love that in the show, he gets the chance, even comments on it, to have that badass last word moment. Laughs at the hubris of it. Last words after making an untimate sacrafice: "Oh well... "
He fought the good fight right to the End, even if the man himself didn't think he did. Saddest thing ever said while he was alive: "I guess this makes us even"-just before he blows the Agatha right out of the stars to stop the Protomolecule spread. He effectively ended the War between Earth and Mars in the process. It has to be said, mind, this was exactly the kind of Agent you'd send to kill Marcus Inarios.
I love that The Expanse is a series about Sacrifice for the good of the Species in such a violent and hostile place as Space. Everyone dies. But only a few martyr themselves and are truly remembered by even fewer. Even Miller's choice was perverted in the end, used as fuel and only a few knew the truth of his Why. Cotyar reminds me so much of Miller.
Man, they killed him right when I started thinking him as one of the best in the show and one of the main heroes. (Even thought he had just murdered a dude coldly... harsh decisions make for strong characthers!). I really thought he could have escaped that ship, but his sacrifice was not in vain. We've lost the detective and the spy... and in this show anyone might be next. The marine? The pilot? The politician? The botanist?
I hate to see him go but having the guts to kill off important or a well liked characters makes the show much better because you never know what can happen. Imagine how lame game of thrones would be if Ned or Robb Stark or King Robert were never killed.
Nick Tarabay has a weird charm to his characters. Asher is pretty much one of the biggest scumbags he's ever played but he still ended up being a favorite character of mine. So annoying he didn't last in The Expanse too.
I love what you did.. I’ve watched it a lot. Great job and he was an amazing character on a great show filled with great characters played by awesome actors. I wish I had something more pithy to say
Beautifully edited video! You have summarized his contribution of the great cause in Season 3, he literally stopped that unnecessary war. It is sad to see him gone but I will remember him with respect.
Awesome character and absolutely loved the chemistry and relationship between him and Chrisjen. Wished there could have been so much more of that to see.
Great job Zurik :D Great flow of quotes and follow of music, good parallels :) That quote at 1:31-1:34 "I own him, not you" - brings on mind what Ashur said in Vengeance e3 while talking to Oenomaus, he said "You own them nothing!" (same pauses between words) ^^ "Even if life fades, my hand shall yet be felt!"
RIP Cotyar 😭 He survived what we thought was a death sentence... only to quickly find himself with yet _another_ death sentence, this time one he couldn't survive. Goddamnit.
Fantastic vid tribute to a great character who paid the ultimate price doing the right thing.... definitely will miss all the barbed conversations between Bobbie, Chrisjen and him.... now, as long as we can see his compatriots a bit longer, that would be a good thing.... #savetheexpanse
Looking back on this now after amzon has had s4 come out and has confirmed 5 it makes me so happy all the effort we all put in to save this show. It truly amazing. I streamed on twitch me and a bunch of friends building expanse ships in space engineers and watching the show in the background
Nick Tarabay always providing a great acting in the making of an interesting role. as we saw him in SPARTACUS, I will miss his participation in season four of THE EXPANSE
This show has so many great characters. Drummer, Cotyar, Ashford, Avasarala... Sometimes it seems like the Roci crew could take a season off and we'd still have plenty to see.
Pretty late to all this but have just binge-watched the 3rd season. Great video. If one of my favorite characters had to go, this was the best way possible. Now I just got to get my ass in gear and start reading the books!
Loved this guy. Memorable character death. Haven't been as sad since Miller got killed off. Thank god we still have Bobbie, Amos, Drummer, Johnson, Prax, and Alex.
