It's now roughly 12 months since I started to travel full time in my campervan after I completed the build so I thought I make this update video to go over the exterior of my campervan to show how things look 1 year later.

I have wrapped quite a few vans in a similar style to what you have done there. After the first couple, I started leaving a few mm gap either side of the seams. It is very difficult to get a perfect stretch and adhesion in the seam with all of the unevenness of that area. Not sure about the lifting around your windows. That said I have the luxury of doing it inside, so I cut the hole, wrap it, then fit the window.🙂

@@GadgetJohn half the issue is the heat soaked up by the black vinyl will very quickly highlight any problem areas.

Another great video John, campers of any shape size or brand have to be a labour of love. The more love you give them the better they perform😀. Mine is 24 yrs young and still going strong…..I love it a lot🤑😀😀

Still looking great I copied the door sill seal and it made a difference I did on my previous build fit extra door seals but never got round to it on the current van so thanks for the timely reminder! Mine’s a 2016 with 122k on the clock

keep up the great vids. I put some sound deadening over the top of the vehicle battery box as that box is only thin plastic and find engine /road noise comes up through that area. I put doors seal on after your vid while back on the autotrail .

Yes the battery box is noisy, I have a thick rubber & thick carpet floor mat in the front and that’s stopped the road noise from the battery box.

Thanks very much I liked it ,as it’s nice to come back in a circle to see what worked , I learned a lot . I installed the Victron B to B after watching your video and re installed it a month ago ,so looked back and used your video a second time thank you. The Victron is working well I like the blue tooth so installed the Victron charger too they are brilliant to be fair. As for the guy poking at your van so to speak , there will always be the vw clan versus the rest, but my buddy just had a horror story with his 2018 VW and I also know someone who has a van hire company who now won’t touch VW with a barge pole . I’m sure for every make van there’s a horror story so like you say good preventative maintenance well done and thank you 👍👍👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇨🇦🦢

Cheers John, that was a clear and honest review. I'm glad you covered the paint treatment to the skirting inserts and front grill, as I'm still wondering about what to do with my Ducato. I'm using back to black wax on it for now, but it isn't long lasting and its a bit messy too. I appreciate you did the whole panel, bodywork inc. Anyway, I really enjoyed the tour. Take care. 👋

Best thing you can use on the bumper is raptor. I used it on my vw and never had a stone chip since 👍. Might have to put it on the boxer I’m building now.

I’ve avoided raptor paint after seeing loads of vans painted with it and it flakes off & chips far too easy and it much harder to then touch up then plastidip

@@GadgetJohn yeah I know what you mean can’t really touch it up, but all the videos I’ve seen it flake off is on the jobs people have been too lazy to prep it and painted it straight onto shiny paintwork.

John have you tried forever black? I’ve used it for the last two years and it never flakes and I’ve only re-applied it once in this time and that’s cus I scuffed the bumper on a bank. Sam Crafty Blinders put me on to it

John try white grease for the doors plus locks that's what all motor garages us . As I've found that oil doesn't protect the door hinges also damages them

I found only oil gets into the hinges to lubricate them

Try using graphite to lube the hinges rather than oil, that should be kinder to the plasti-dip finish. It works well on locks too.

Only oil gets into the hinges enough to lubricate them I’ve found.

I enjoyed watching this video, Thank you so much for your honesty. Disappointed with the Pastidip Spray, I planned to use this on mine but after watching your video I will avoid it until something better is available. I will be getting the door seals. hopefully they will reduce the noise on my van as well. Talking about maintenance, I noticed you did not say anything about gear oil, as far as I am aware the gear oil needs to be changed every 30,000 miles. Looking forward to the interior video. I like the flags on the rear door. you need one for Morocco if you have not been there yet. Thank you John.

There’s no maintenance task for the gearbox oil, so that’s not been touched. The plastidip spray is fantastic, I just need to put a thicker layer on the front bumper edges

Really enjoyed ‘revisiting’ Lewis/Harris with you. Loved the Callanais stones. We visited in a hire van before we took the plunge 8 years ago. Looking forward to going back soon. Have you been to The Blackhouse Village yet, definitely worth a visit. Great Vlog!

For the bumpers, black plastic dye (worth make a very good one) is much more hard wearing and gives a factory look. You would have a big job getting all the plastidip off if you went that route though

I’d love to see any front bumper coating after 14,000 miles of driving in both harsh summer & winter climates, with many motorway miles too. The front of a vehicle gets peppered with sand, rocks, winter gritting as well as hail and rain.

If you see it that way then it’s your loss, most would see it as an opportunity to learn from the mistakes and cut the wrap 3mm away from the windows or panel edges, which is how they do it at the factory.

Thanks for the video John. Interesting to see that your spare wheel and tyre don’t match. We have been warned about the legality of running mismatched tyres in places in Europe when we had to get a puncture fixed. They don’t like different wheels on the same axle. I also use Elite and would also highly recommend them, we run Falken AT3W tyres which have been great, especially in the wet and snow.

Whoever told you that it’s illegal to have a different tyre spare wheel is crazy. Look at all the cars in Europe with space saver spare wheels.

@@GadgetJohn we had a puncture in France in 2019 and 3 different garages refused to repair or replace a single tyre. Had to be both on that axle. For a 4x4 they said it was all 4 ! I think from what I’ve found since it is something the police can fine you for but I’ve not been fined only forced to buy 2 tyres for a single repairable puncture. If you find out anything more please let us know. Especially with the winter tyre rules that came in in 2021.

It is an MOT failure to have two different size tyres across an axle. But yes as a temporary spare it is accepted in the UK. Provided you don’t present it for an MOT like it!

On the subject of tyres John I’m presuming the tyres on your van are not marked rotational? As now you’ve swapped them around they are rotating in opposite directions. Only saying as mine are and don’t want you getting caught out at the next MOT

Hello John, we’ve been following you for nearly 6 years now! Can I ask have you had any issues with rainwater getting into your bonnet area on the vans you have owned? Our van is a 2018 Fiat which I have had since new and I was surprised to see the water ingress from the screen and drain area. A video on a proper ( permanent fix would be appreciated). Thanks for all your content.

Thanks for the video once again John. Great to hear what’s worked and not worked for you. Can I ask what spare tyre / wheel you use? Is it the same bad ass wheel and BFG tyre like the rest of them? I am buying the same wheel / tyres and was wondering if the same spare will fit under the van. Also would you mind telling me how you fixed your blink cameras to your roof rack. The tiny brackets which came with them will not be up to the job I’d say.

I use the standard spare tyre as it’s fine for emergencies. I use the brackets the blink cameras come with, they’re fine.

The Starlink base is shown in this video tie wrapped onto the recovery board, which is also shown in the Starlink video. There’s no special fitting, just nice thick tie wraps / zip ties.

WD40 do a product called motorbike chain wax I find it great for hinges it sort of “sets” once applied.

How are the electrics working out? How long can you go off grid while using the van facilities (eg eating in the van and keeping it warm)?

I think the PlastiDip has done very well considering some of the roads and terrain you've been, so re-doing it every now and then to keep it looking like new isn't too bad. If you were doing it again, would you use the vinyl wrap or another product ? Maybe something like Raptor paint? Have you tired a dry or silicone lube for the door hinges? I was going to ask how the ladder fixes on, then I remembered you'd done one on the AutoFail, so watched that video again 🙂 (I'm looking at how to fasten the top rail of a bike rack onto Sprintie the campervan.) I can see you in the hospital car park with your T-cut and a cloth keeping yourself busy while you wait for Mandy 🙂

I’m going to repaint the bumper, it’s so easy to blend the paint in. I tried silicon for the hinges but it can’t penetrate the hinges, only chain oil has worked. I’m usually editing while I’m waiting for Mandy, the weather here has been a bit wet this week.

@@GadgetJohn depends, if running a courier company with 150 plus vehicles over the last 25 years, small, medium and large vans from many different manufacturers is anything to go by then I have a fair idea of what makes for a more reliable value-for-money that doesn't fall apart if you sneeze in it. Also, Which large international parcel delivery/courier company has a fleet of Citroen, Peugeot, Fiat? They are 'cheap' for a reason. 😂🤔😂

You seem to be coming at this with an attitude and I skewed situation. Look at motorhome manufacturers, look at the base vehicle they use & hopefully you’ll see that couriers abuse their vehicles, motorhome owners don’t and that’s testament to used motorhomes, built on Peugeot or fiat vans, still running over 20 years after they were made. Change your attitude, it’ll change your life.
