When people (kids) think of karate as a way of life, they practice it differently. It becomes a different motivation, and not just to learn self-defense techniques or to obtain a ranking belt. I've seen kids who go to the dojo because their parents want them to be there. I've seen kids who show no courtesy or respect to others. Karate is part of a culture that should be cultivated long before one sets foot in a dojo. The most interesting part of the video is the cleaning of the dojo afterwards. It shows a high level of respect to the learning institution as a whole.

My 2 sons are studying Karate and I use all of your and Jesse's videos to inspire them to reach higher, to be brave and strong; mentally and physically. We live in Western Europe (moved away from my home country 13 years ago) and our Dojos are so different, not as disciplined or respectful as in Japan. I am Latvian and I was raised with similar discipline and raised my kids with the same respect as I was taught. I am very proud of my children being successful, having red belt and a display of their trophies. Every time I see anyone's children excel in karate it makes me soooooooo sooooo proud and my heart just melts. Thank you, you are supporting my children without knowing that. I am beyond grateful to you.

The goal for each training is so cool. I used to do something similar as a teen by myself. I had a training diary where I'd write down after every lesson what we did and also what criticism I got. Before the next lesson, I'd re-read it and remember those points for the lesson

My father was stationed in Yokosuka, in the Kangawa Prefecture in the mid 1980's until the early 2000's. He was with the US Naval Forces there in Yokosuka. He was a Judoka in the US during the 1960's before he joined the Navy. My family was blessed to be able to grow up on the Navy base during this time. In 1988, my mother finally allowed me to study Kyokushin Karate at the Seishin Juku Dojo there in Yokosuka. Takashima Sensei trained me in a dojo & class very similar to this dojo in the video. I eventually earned my shodan & travelled to many parts of the Kanazawa Prefecture competing in many tournaments over the years. This video brought up so many memories for me. I miss Japan & my old dojo. Now, as a Rokudan Kyoshi in Shito Ryu, I run my own Karate dojo in Tennessee. Domo Arigato Gozaimasu, Nagano Sensei for creating this excellent video. I love watching all your videos.

The practice of Mokuso reminds me of a particular time in 1963/4 at the end of a Judo session at the Budokwai in London that on this occasion was presided over by Sensei Kisaburo Watanabe and Sensei Trevor Leggett. The fact that the highly regarded teacher Trevor Leggett was present no doubt accounted for why this meditation period continued for so long. It must easily have lasted for at least fifteen to twenty minutes, possibly longer. After all the stressful activity we had just undergone that evening, I personally found the practice most valuable in settling the mind into a state where little or no thought processes were in evidence. Speaking for myself, I was determined not to move an inch while I knelt there with eyes closed and didn't do so at all, even though I could hear an occasional shuffling in the ranks accompanied by the odd cracking sound of one or two knees somewhere to my right. Sadly, we never ended a session this way again which I was most disappointed about. In those days, the spiritual aspect of martial arts was not generally understood by the majority of people in the West.

The most different thing for me was the cleaning at the end, I think it's very rooted in Japanese culture, we don't have that in my country. Also, the dojo-kun was pretty different from what I'm used to. This made me so nostalgic, I really want to get back to training, but I don't dare until I get the second dose of the vaccine.

I like the idea of having a goal in every class. I’m not sure of having the kids pick their own goal, but think that the Sensei should pick one so everyone is making the effort to achieve the same goal in the class. Wish I had a kids’ class now to introduce it to.
@christineperez7562
@christineperez7562 2 года назад
Not everyone has the same goals. Every child needs to work on themselves. To me that is like a child needing help with reading and you bring the child a math tutor.
@donelmore2540
@donelmore2540 2 года назад
@@christineperez7562 Letting children set their own goal would result in a bunch of kids eating candy and not working out at all. The teacher, hopefully, has more experience and wisdom than a bunch of kids and better able to set meaningful goals. In my many many years of teaching Karate, I don’t think I ever let the students, whatever their ages, set the curriculum. I gave a lot of individual attention, suggestions and correction, but the class was mine to run. I still like the idea of seeing something lacking in the group and setting a goal they can all work on.
@srimantamadhab2632
@srimantamadhab2632 2 года назад
Nah i really feel like the kids choosing their goals mean they are improving, they realise where they are making the mistake or where they lack and where their flaws lie and they want to correct it themselves, it's their will then that makes them even better. If the sensei chose one for them and they are alr good at it they will end up losing the interest in doing better. By choosing their own goals they are watching themselves from a 3rd person pov and learning more than they would if they are just bding controlled
@srimantamadhab2632
@srimantamadhab2632 2 года назад
@@donelmore2540 that is more controlling, teachers are there to guide them, if they don't want to do it you can never mentally make them want to, everyone lacks when they start. The goal is about what they want to improve in their karate, when everyone is performing, the sensei can look at only a few or even if the teacher looks at everyone it's not for long enough to understand what the student is actually lacking/doing wrong but while practising the student is always paying attention to their moves and when they aren't able to do something they understand that, they may not take the setting goal as seriously at first but everything changes when they continue doing it. One student may be lacking in their stance while the other in timing and they know it, you can not pair them together and give them a single target that doesn't solve either of their problem and expect them to do better in what they are lacking. Students practise the best with the motivation they get from their peers in the dojo, that's when they want to improve and that is when theu should be given the freedom to be able to do so
@srimantamadhab2632
@srimantamadhab2632 2 года назад
@@donelmore2540 and there is a difference between setting the curriculum and their personal goal, a teacher should never set a student's personal goal
