Great video. I think the section on the keyboard shortcut at the end was the most useful for me. Shortcuts for superscript and subscript as well as a few others for special equations is really helpful for statistics.

Great tutorial Gary, I have my F keys off so I don't need a the FN key to use the controls. Find myself using the volume and play/pause button a lot. Still learnt quite a bit here too. 👍

I have the feature turned off. I use the F keys quite a bit and realized it was one less step not having to use the FN/Globe key as well. Gary, Happy Thanksgiving! Keep up the great work 👏🏽

Thanks, Gary. I find myself using the volume and brightness control quite a lot and settled for controlling these functions directly with F11/F12 and F1/F2, respectively. I have also discovered that if you press Option - Shift - F11/F12, you have finer control over your volume, and so goes for the brightness. I wonder if there is a setting so I can make that behavior the default one, i.e., pressing only F11/F12 to adjust the volume more granularly. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the tip on fine-tuning. You might want to look at Karabiner-Elements for special requirement of making F11/F12 do fine control.

hey im wondering if there is a way to switch my f1,f2 and f3 commands to my numlock 1,2,3 eaiser for a game i play

Thanks for confirming (at 5:15) that F3 through F6 don't work when using the function key to revert to special-feature mode. This is a bug! Also, anyone interested enough to watch this video may also be interested in two bits of software for further customising this behaviour: 1. Fluor (lets you set the function-mode vs special-feature-mode on a per-application basis), and Karabiner-Elements, for extensive keyboard customisation. A quick search will reveal a number of other keyboard customisation software products too.

At work but still use the Function keys daily. But they use pc’s. On my Mac at home I shut the functions off and just use them as special features

Great video, this explains it well. I have just been through 2 sessions with Apple support trying to figure out why my "Special Features" on the keyboard don't work any more after upgrading from Mojave to Ventura. Turns out that I had the “Use F1, F2, etc as Standard Function Keys” turned on, when this needs to be OFF - as per your video. (I sent them a screenshot as proof for the setting!) They led me through SMC reset, NVRAM reset, called my issue very concerning!!! because the whole row of "function keys" suddenly didn't do anything any more. The problem was just misinterpretation - I saw “Use F1, F2, etc as Standard Function Keys” as "Do what is printed on them", not some obscure, not defined F1, F2 etc. operation. Doh... Nobody ever explained to me the special features vs. function keys, and the Apple support people did not pick it up either. 😍

How do you tell which functions are assigned to a function key? (not the special features printed on the keys) Also could you please tackle f9 key does not update fields in Word for the Mac.

The whole thing is a toggle though. Either have FN held down or not and how you have it set up just makes it the opposite. But you always have access to both F-Keys and special features keys with the FN key.

What do you use the f keys for ? Anything different from default ? I feel fn plus f key is a bit not easy on a keyboard to reach

The use would depend on the person and what you need to do. Most people probably don't need to assign anything to them.

Question can't seem to find answer. Can you bring an app that was used like iMovie back to a time that it has not been used with time machine. I want to have a fresh start with iMovie and when I do use replace with time machine at a past date nothing changes. Sorry this is off the subject of your video. Thank you

@@macmost I want imovie to go back to like it was going to be opened for the first time and then start to use the program and have the files or the previous work done erased. A virgin program. hope this makes sense. Consider it to be picking up a new computer and running all the programs for the first time.

I have a Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad. The f5 and f6 keys do not have a special feature. Could I allocate one of those keys to the dollar symbol?

What's wrong with using Shift+4 (assuming you have a US keyboard)? It isn't easy to reassign a key to a typed character like that. Usually you assign it to a menu item as a keyboard shortcut.

@@macmost I type a lot of LaTeX code and it feels tedious to type the dollar symbol every time I would like to create an equation environment. Hitting only the f5 or f6 key is only one press instead of two presses every time.
