I wouldn't go that far. Liverpool won the title and are currently champions of England, Europe and the World. Cheers. This game and the defeat in 1971 was a learning curve and actually put Liverpool on the march to 1970s and 1980s dominance.

The referee was glad it was all over for sure.. How silly were Liverpool, wearing long sleeves in the Wembley sun? Thick cotton shirts back then! This didn't go unnoticed by Bertie Mee and The Arsenal wore short sleeves. Sensible decision that possibly helped the players, especially with the extra time. #COYG

I remember watching this as a 7 year old .we had a black and white television , as did 98 percent of the uk .I don't know how, as we didn't know these people,but my dad and I were invited to watch the game.at someones house in a nearby street. After watching only black and white tv this was like magic. I think this was the first cup final broadcast in colour

Man speaketh truth - I went to my aunties aged 8 to specifically watch this in colour - as she had just got a colour TV - unheard of in Sheffield in 1971

These clips gives the impression that the game was evenly balanced and that is far from the truth. Arsenal could/should have won by 3-4 goals

Been a Liverpool fan all my life and I was gutted but I still remember this match fondly. It was a young team that you knew would get a taste for winning. sportsmanship between both teams different class back then. Both teams were going down with cramp and the players helped each other from opposing sides. You can just about see Bill Shankly congratulating the Arsenal players. The Liverpool fans clapped the Arsenal players On their lap of honour. Lastly proper kits and fans with scarves and flags. This was a time when the Cup Final was special. These days its just another game that you soon forget about.

Do you know what, I reckon Ray Clemence might’ve saved it without the deflection. I also never realised it took a deflection until seeing the goal from this angle.

Same here Must have seen that goal 200X and didn't spot the deflection Given that by 71 the final was live broadcast the way we see know it's funny seeing it done like it was in the 60s and before

Arsenal are the only team who have scored FA Cup final goals that were credited to the wrong player and it happened twice in the 1970s. In 1971 it was George Graham who scored the first and on 1979 it was Alan Sunderland who got the first not Talbot.

@@lyndoncmp5751 - FWIW, I watched the match live from the other side of the world, starting as a neutral observer. After a while, Arsenal were getting away with dirty rough tackles that weren't penalised, so I started hoping that Liverpool would win. Arsenal scored more goals, so they were (by definition) the winners. If you can't get over it after 49 years, you choose a miserable existence. Perhaps you could complain about the outcome of the Battle of Hastings.

45 year old referee with a "day job" (not a professional athlete), relentlessly keeping up with play for 120 minutes - but he explained that he was glad not to be doing it all again a week later. Muscle recovery slows down in the early 30s age bracket.

People think ref is an Gooner. He might be. But mostly he was just happy that game ended because if you watch the full thing you can see it was full of incidents and it wasnt an easy game at all to referee. PS: I am a gooner.

What an astonishing goal 1-0 by Liverpool's Steve Highway, what you don't see is Peter Thompson, Liverpool's seasoned winger, passing the ball to Liverpool's new winger to score!. What a pathetic (on both sides) equalising goal (1-1) for Arsenal ... In regard to Arsenal'ls winning goal by Charlie George (a great strike) Liverpool's Goal Keeper Ray Clements said after the match "He could have saved the shot, but Liverpool's Larry Loyd tried to block thus a deflection and it went beyond his grasp".
@tonywarren5031

Arsenal probably deserved to win although it was great to see the travelling Kop showing the Arsenal fans how to raise scarves. Look at the difference. The Kop stayed and applauded Arsenal after the game as well and Frank went on record to say what great sports they were. In contrast look at how quickly Arsenal fans emptied Cardiff 30 years later when Liverpool got their own back.
@lyndoncmp5751
@lyndoncmp5751 4 года назад
@David John Thats why I said they probably deserved it anyway. Liverpool were a young and upcoming side that went on to rule Europe later in the 1970s. Or are you talking about 2001?

More atmosphere back then, the FA cup was a bigger deal than it is now, but the quality of the play was pretty poor. The modern game is more skilful and better on the whole.
