Listen: • THE FACELESS - Deconse...
California death metal outfit the Faceless move in a slightly softer direction on their their album, including plenty of melodic guitar passages and cleanly sung vocals.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

I honestly think that this album is a total masterpiece. I think that The Faceless have really good sense of how to create a complex song, but I do agree with the fact that the clean vocals didn't work with the song Emancipate. Some of the sampling in Emancipate didn't work either. But other than that, I really like this album. In Solitude was my favorite.

I feel like knowing a bands influences helps understand the direction. This album was meant to be more progressive as apposed to technical. I personally love this album and the direction it went. They did something new and still maintained that signature sound that they have made for themselves. A band like this is going to change and progress. That's what a band is supposed to do. Just my opinion.

10/10 alone for Autotheism I,II and III, 9/10 for the rest of the album. Amazing songwriting, whether you like it or not, at least this band tried something risky, and in my opinion, succeeded! If you want blast beats for 90% of an album and just growls, you're listening to the wrong band. But don't bash something that's not to your liking, when the creativity level of this band is sky high.

+cd0u50c9 Yeah, I feel like if you're going into this album expecting something like Origin then you are going to be pretty disappointed. However, for someone who likes a little more dynamic variety in their music, this is a home run. I actually haven't really been able to stop listening to this for the past week or two, simply because I hadn't discovered it prior and had to saturate myself with it, haha. Love the guitar tones, the composition, the range of styles, and pretty much everything about it.

I thought this record was an absolute masterpiece. The only "bad" thing about it is that it was short. The riffs flow effortlessly into one another. There was a perfect question-and-answer exchange between the clean and harsh vocals. The clean vocals could be described as dramatic, emotive, expressive but NEVER "nasally". The soloing was done perfect as well; shreddy without being inane and played with such profound passion that it's memorable to anyone who cares to really listen.

Man our opinions differ. I love this album, it's honestly their most progressive work. Planetary Duality was OK, It was just straight up Tech Death though I felt though. This was most creative to me, and it really created a story! I don't know I felt it was really well done, a truly progressive work in my opinion! Plus, the beginning of Hail Science actually kind of freaked me despite the fact it was probably made to be humorous.
@theangrycheeto
@theangrycheeto 7 лет назад
Riley Kopp interesting fact, Wes Hauch composed the majority of Hail Science, with Keene supplementing for the writing of that track. As a fan of tech death and the progressive metal guitar community, I really enjoy this album and it's definitely the most cinematic faceless album as a whole and I actually really enjoy Keene's idiosyncratic vocals. It's not a complete redefinition of clean vocals on a prog metal album but I personally prefer Keene's vocals to any other vocalist that Keene has been accused of ripping off like Opeth or Devin Townsend. Anthony's entitled to his opinion about this album but I wholesomely disagree and that's alright, we can agree to disagree on that. Music is a subjective thing and we're all just trying to find what most gets our ears off and that's gonna be different for each person.

I loved your Converge reviews, and I'm amazed how you can review totally different genres appropriately and I agree with you on this one as well. While this album has really awesome solos, the clean vocals totally killed it for me big time. Sounds like Opeth ripoff, while Planet Duality was IMO one of the best tech death metal albums of all time, they had the whole alien theme going etc.. everything about that album was very unique. This sounds like a bunch of bands thrown together with no clear direction. I wish they just started a new band (which they kinda did anyway, should have changed the name).

See, it's totally cool that you didn't like the album. They shifted their sound, and not everyone is going to like it. I actually love this album, nearly more so than planetary duality. It took a few listens to get into it properly, but I've grow to really love it. I think the cleans vocals have improved alot since the last LP, and I'm at the point where I actually like them quite alot. The playing for me is alot more developed, and spaced out, which alows a listener to take more of it in, and really embrace the feel of the music. I am more so a prog fan than a death metal fan, so this would be why my opinion sits where it does. Overall I'd probably give the album an 8.5 - 9 at this point.

I didn't really enjoy the musical direction on Opeth's last LP. I thought a lot of the instrumental interludes and "jams" were a bit underwhelming, but I do agree that his vocals were pretty sinister for the most part. Though singing well, traditionally, requires staying on pitch, I usually like to equate singing to acting, meaning that conveying emotions is imperative if you want to connect with people on a deep level.

Anthony, you missed the theme and context of the album, which was essentially the first few chapters of Nietzsche's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra". The musical circus theme is perhaps a reference to the tightrope across which humanity must walk over to reach the ubermensch. I think you will find the lyrics to be thoughtful and not so tacky, if still obnoxious at parts, given the context for the songs' lyrics.

Hmmmm. I don't know. But I think you could make it into a segment about your personal tastes in music, and how and why your opinions of certain styles of music and various artists have changed over time. If you haven't made one yet, you should make a video about music appreciation, or 'how to listen' to music, and what it means to be a critic of music, and how to objectively judge the quality and artistic merit of a piece of music, even if the style and aesthetic isn't personally appealing.

I don't know, perhaps I'm just a sucker for clean vocals on heavy distortion, but I find this both highly interesting and really heavy at the same time. There were moments you mentioned which did sound bland, but I've learned to listen past those moments somehow. I guess it's just the way I approach this stuff, and with which expectations I do so. I definetly understand what your saying about the clean vocals and "moving to the middle" but I still love this album.

I'm eye-to-eye with you on this one. Good call and good review.

First off I would like to say I love watching you're reviews, they've actually put me on to some music I wouldn't have heard of otherwise. That being said could you please review madchild's new lp dope sick or slaughterhouses welcome to our house? Thanks and keep it up
