Lyrics:
I heard you call through our wall
Weaving your tale through our minds eye
A direct embodiment of your wanton faith
You command me as I'm unknowingly
succumbing to your ways
Disgusting, yet so intriguing, I recant my beliefs
Accepting your false idols as my own, forsaking mine
I will be reborn and pure blood will line the land
I am just a fool, masked and anonymous
The final test lies just ahead
The swordsman have chosen me
I will die
I heard you call me from over the sea
I heard you call bringing me to this place
Once meek and on a perilous path
Now guided every step of the way
Light the fire and cast me in
Knowing the meaning of sacrifice
I will be the burning heart in the chest of the wicker man
I believe in the eternal life through sacrificing myself to you
I believe in the everlasting life
Achieving the death of a martyr for you

I remember in 2007 driving with my ex-girlfriend in the passenger seat while this song was playing - during the happy sounding guitar solo near the end i look over and see a happy tear going down her cheek. I'll never forget that and any time i listen to this it warms my heart

My favourite song on the album. The intro riff is 00's deathcore, there is also a lot of melodic stuff going further during the first two minutes. Also cool how they brought back the slow down intro into the breakdown at 2:25. The effect of unplugged guitar at 2:55 with the slam riff sounds groovy. Interesting transition, where the intro riff turns from metalcore to the melodic metalcore is another standout (3:44). And of course the last minute of the song is super melodic outro, great way to finish this song and make it even better. If there is gonna be "100 classic metalcore/deathcore songs" list, this classic has all reasons to be featured there.

3:00 is one of the hardest death metal breakdowns ever. i love all their records, i dont understand the autotheism hate. just because its more progressive than technical and way less aggressive than their previous releases, it is still a masterpiece of an album

I have. I've heard everything they've produced, they are one of my all time favorite bands. If any album by them were going to be labeled "Tech Death" it would be akeldama. Planetary duality had elements of both, but their use of breakdowns, cleans, and other metalcore elemants definitely would be labeled deathcore. while I admit; they lean way further toward "Death metal" than Metalcore, when it comes to classifications of "Deathcore" itself, they still aren't death metal.

Ah, I'd say that's definitely gotta be the reason why, man. Here's why that makes perfect sense, and also what slightly divides us as metal fans; Autotheism is without a doubt their most proggy release, and progressive metal is my absolute favorite, personally. Between The Buried And Me is my favorite band ever, so, what does that tell you? Other favorites include The Contortionist and The Safety Fire. Don't get me wrong, though. I'd probably consider tech-death to be a close second or third.
@EvisceratedZombie666
@EvisceratedZombie666 11 лет назад
Fair enough. I thought Autotheism was boring as all hell compared to their first releases and the fact that everyone was saying it was their best didn't help. That still belongs to Planetary Duality.

People hate it only because of the clean vocals though, and that's fucking stupid. They don't even try to find any appreciation because Michael Keene likes to sing. RoS kind of borders on deathcore (all the dissonance and breakdowns), but for the most part they're just a really quirky Brain Drill worship band. The only way Akeldama is more of a tech death album than Planetary Duality is the sprinkling of Death riffs, but the sound of the riffs is just as important as the structure. The way the ideas develop on Akeldama is VERY deathcore whereas the ideas on Planetary Duality flow and sound like a tech death album.

If you listen to enough of a certain style of music, you'll subconsciously find a way to work that into your own style. I typically listen to a lot of death metal and grindcore, but recently I've been listening to a lot of doom metal. If you listened to some of my more recent songs, you'll hear a LOT of doom metal-ish stuff. And modern music pretty much is derived from classical, somewhat. If classical music hadn't existed, modern music would probably sound entirely different.
