The Fading Chinatown of Kolkata | Unique Stories from India

What was once a thriving community of thousands of Chinese descendants is now down to just a few families.
Kolkata's Chinatown was once home to a thriving community of over 20,000 ethnically Chinese Indian nationals. That number is now estimated to be as low as 2,000. Most of the inhabitants' ancestors moved to Kolkata in the early 20th century, setting up shops and businesses for families of Chinese origin. But of late, the younger generation of the community has been looking to move out of Chinatown, looking for better prospects and standards of living in countries like USA, UK, Australia and Canada. Does this spell the end for the once-bustling Chinatown in Kolkata?

101 Traces looks at the last of anything: ethnic communities, folk craftsmen, disappearing trades, forgotten people. It sketches portraits of these unique individuals, locked in a battle they cannot win: a battle against the future. Together, they represent the dying whispers of ancient heritage and traditional individuality. As India moves towards homogenized global pop culture, 101 Traces honors the people, the objects, and the skills that connect us to our ancient identity.

I live very near to the Chinatown in Calcutta.. Going for a morning breakfast to Chinatown with all my friends (nd we invite as many people as we can) on weekends is still a religiously followed ritual fr us!! I'm a proud Indian, but believe me when I say that the 'Soup Chowmein(garnished with fried chicken/pork) is the BEST and cheapest breakfast one could have in this country.. it costs just Rs. 50 fr one full plate (along with unlimited soup and 3 wantons). The best part is, even the chowmein is HANDMADE. Sorry for being such a jerk fr posting this on ur channel but we feel that the Chinese of Calcutta are an important part of our multicultural heritage.. Chang Ming Calcutta!! 😊😊

@Jacky Phantom Don't talk without knowledge. Back in the 40s China was a very poor place. So was South East. Thet were all in civil war and poverty. And this is Kolkata we are talking about. Kolkata was the capital of British India. It was at par with Singapore or Tokyo. So back then this was the go to place for any business minded individual. Now Kolkata has declined after communism..but I hope it will rise again.

I have had lived in Calcutta, WB (1998 - 2005) and some more cities in India. Calcutta is the ultimate, amazing and the most beautiful city to live in. The Armenians, BENGALIS (THE DOMINANTS) , Parsis, Jews, Anglo Indians, Chinese. Nahum's, China town, Coffee House and thousands more to add on. The perfect blend of Europe and the United Kingdom ..I have had never felt home alone. The best place in India to be. No wherein India I could find all of these!

There is a Chinese village in Tinsukia district of Assam known as China Patty. The Britishers brought them for tea plantation. After Independence they were unable to go back to China. Those Chinese people got mingled with the locals & married Assamese people. The current generation have forgot the Chinese language and they speak Assamese in the village.

British Kolkata in the early twentieth century was at par with Singapore and Hong Kong at that time. It offered plenty of opportunities. China was embroiled in civil war on the other hand. But how things change. Today, China has over 25 booming modern metropolis that a sane person would choose over Kolkata anyday. The irony is that personal freedom in China are still not as good as in India. That's why these people are moving to Canada instead of China.

Believe it or not, Indian Chinese people have a huge community in Canada. There are multiple Hakka restaurants in each city opened all across Canada and most of them are VERY successful. I don’t see this immigration as a bad thing. If anything, this has nothing to do with their Chinese roots. It’s just people looking for a better life so they choose to immigrant to countries that are more well off. Lots of Indians choose to do this and move to Canada, USA, Uk, Australia, New Zealand, etc. The Chinese Indian community seem to be better of when it comes to immigrating and there is nothing wrong with that.

Apart from Tangra there are Chinese staying in Central Kolkata as well. The famous Chinese leather Shoe business in Chitpur Road have also vanished. The condition of those who still runs Shoe shops in this area is a hard story to tell. Feel Sad to see this loss for Our City of Joy which is known for its multicultural beauty. Kolkata's Chinatown decline was due to the Defence of India Act, 1962. India incarcerated thousands of Chinese-Indians in an internment camp, where they were held for years without trial. Thousands more Chinese-Indians were forcibly deported.

It's funny how Chinese people speak English with Indian accent, because it's the only type of English they heard growing up.

I feel sad, there were lots of Chinese students in our school, St. Patrick's H. S. School, Asansol. All of them were borders. They were the best sportsmen in the school. It seems to be history now. There were two Chinese restaurants in Asansol who introduced us to Chow mein. The shops have since been sold and the families have migrated. Once in Kolkata, I was at a street food shop run by two Chinese brothers. What amazed me was there mutual conversation in Bangla.

Back then Kolkata was one of the best cities in the world , admittedly it was colonial. But that is why these people were attracted to Kolkata. It is said what has happened to Kolkata since then.

China town is known for cheap booz, great food & unique ambience .New cuisines are fading the old glory of our country. The footfall dropped a lot in this decade still its a pride of Calcutta. Believe me best food in India is available in Calcutta.Beijing & kim ling and Big Boss are the best among all the restaurants in china town.

World's best documentaries you people make but here in our nation nobody have time to think about whatever they are the part of our country we must protect them from violance and government must provide them protection because they have live here from more than 100 decades so they are the part of our country with their own culture and dignity doing this we the people of India can preserve our diversity for which our nation is famous in the world

I am the 4th generation chinese in India. Most of my community have migrated due to better opportunities. A very few of us remain, and are mostly scattered in various cities in India. As time passes, even we few will wither away.
