The Failure of Nijisanji India - The Original Nijisanji EN

The original NIJISANJI IN was a branch that not many people, even those in Nijisanji actually knew much about. The fact that they flopped is more known than the branch and talents it hosts. Due to various factors, the branch was unable to take off, even compared to Nijisanji's other branches. In this video, we try to find out why.

Sad because I really like Noor's design. And didn't Noor also interview some EN members of niji? That's quite sad.

out of all 3 it's easy to see why Noor would get more attention, her design is top notch and much more unique, whereas the other two feel like background characters from a glance.

they still own the design and character right? technically they can just reuse the design and reassign/recast the streamer that uses them. Whether thats a good idea or not. I dunno. But if I were a penny pinching executive trying to save costs. I'd do that. Reboots are the norm now.

Making a vtuber branch for a country where there's no demand is definitely a bad idea. I'm South African, and as much as I would love to see vtubers from my own country, I also admit that it would be a really bad idea because I don't think there's any demand for it here.

Ironically enough, there was a south African vtubing agency that ended up imploding because of... Several things unrelated to South African weeb culture.

yeah weeb culture isn't as strong here as it is in other places. Also Vtubing is almost unheard of here too

That is why I think an international branch might work. Maybe there isn't enough of a market for a South African group, but maybe one Vtuber could gather a following? Also, I get that English talents from Nijsanji, Hololive, etc. are from different English-speaking countries, but they are pretty quiet about it and don't make a big deal of it, but maybe it would add to their appeal if they did.

@Zergonapal
@Zergonapal 2 года назад
@@RedRabbit-ZA technically yeah, I know a number of hololive EN are from different countries, Australia, US, Canada, even Austria, but they are all lumped together as EN. It might come out or the talents might be upfront about their origins, but they aren't marketing themselves as the Austrian VTuber, the South African Vtuber, or Vtuber from Canada. I dunno if this is because they are not allowed to or if it was decided it'd be too confusing to viewers to make that distinction. I mean they'd probably still speak English instead of their native language like Australian because that is what the majority of their audience likely speaks. But it'd still be nice to say "I'm Australian and I proudly support my Australian Vtuber" right?

@@kurokie3691 its a very long story so I'll just tldr 1. Nijisanji bought one of their competitors and will be using their members as gen 0.5 or smth. People didn't like that cause they didn't audition 1.5 fun fact Nijisanji has a history of their competitors suddenly graduating or just disappearing when moving to a different country one is maya putri(IN) and forgot what she used to be called mint queen(KR) and EnC (the agency they bought) 2. A month before the announcment 3 of the members of EnC took a break and when announced about the accusition they graduated without any graduation stream fans be mad. 3. People assumned its something to do with the characters/model (do note for the 2 people that graduate they owned the character,Alice Mana and Ena are their name used to be part of Paryi and Paryi gave the model to his daughter when the group disbanded) 4. Fans investigated found that again Mana and Ena's character was sold as part of the package so they decides to quit again fans be mad. 5. Found out Maorin their leader is a sociopath who used to bully people in high school and digging through DMs she might have been power abusing other members especially mana 5.5 reason why Maorin hates mana well because she is the most popular one even though she is the leader(Maorin is part of the owner of EnC btw) 6. Nijisanji announced the graduation of Maorin like a few hours after the announcment that she will join Nijisanji. 7. If its not obviouse yet KR people did not like they way Nijisanji handled everything and thus they fked up the debut of KR talents. In anycase the 3 people that left started again in twitch then moved to bilibili with different characters/models except for Mana probably because she does have money to buy part of her character so she started using the old paryi model in bilibili and just recently last year most likely bought it back from anycolor and redebuted in youtube as Alice Mana once again. You can just search her in youtube she still mostly does Bilibili and is once again part of a group involving her original mama Paryi. This isn't the only debut Maorin fked up though with the Blue Archive Vtuber announcment thing well Nexon might say it wasn't Maorin but hey if the honestly said it was Maorin they will be facing far bigger backlash so best to just lie and say they never conducted background checks on their talents. When I heard the news I was like I don't understand then I checked the character and heard the voice and thought yeah they fked up lol.

This isn't also the first time Nijisanji had failed overseas project, their very first expansion in 2018 was when they created Nijisanji Shanghai & Taipei, the branch became a fluke given how Ichikara Inc. only did promotional and tech support for the branch. CAPSULE was the actual company that operated the branch, the company lost the license for the Nijisanji brand thus they rebranded it to VEgo before the entire agency completely closed down mid 2019. VirtuaReal was their 2nd attempt on expanding to the CN speaking market. Of course people became skeptical with this since Nijisanji's rapid expansion and their first attempt of an overseas project had already proven to be naught. But this time this was backed by a larger company, VirtuaReal is a joint venture by Bilibili and Ichikara/Anycolor so both companies have like half half ownership of the branch while also being operated by their own management. To this day VirtuaReal is arguably their largest Overseas branch with EN coming in to 2nd, but I don't think it's a fair comparison since VirtuaReal isn't 100% owned by Anycolor and is on a different platform. Nijisanji EN came to be after dissolving the IN branch which had gone through a lot of business decisions with questionable changes. But the difference with Nijisanji EN unlike the already dissolved IN, KR and ID branch is there is already a proven market for EN thus they didn't have to do the "expand small and test the waters" type of expansion. This project also didn't expand the same way as the other branches since EN is already directly under the wing of the Main JP Office where as KR, ID and IN all had outsourced local managements that operates the branch. Ofc EN still has a different management/staff allocated to them but is still JP based given how the EN members talk about how their managers are obviously living in Japan. In fact I think Nijisanji EN was Nijisanji's first attempt on a very dedicated expansion, they were the first branch to ever debut with original songs and a dedicated program for each wave, Debut with already 2.0 models, etc. Nijisanji has a habit of rapid expansion in the early days of 2018 - 2019 and only began to slow down when the market became competitive later on. When Nishizono Chigusa asked the Interviewer during her auditions for Nijisanji about the company's future, they answered something along the lines of: "Nothing in particular, but it's also not totally unplanned, We're okay as long as Talents in Nijisanji have freedom on how they want to perform, so rather than company this and that, our job is to provide the talents what they need" Which in a sense does reflect to what Nijisanji is. They seem like a company but they also acts more like support "platform" for aspiring content creators or people who want to become Vtubers, and Nijisanji will provide them that platform whether big or small and it does work with their Laissez-faire type management. Ichikara's first idea was to create an App that lets anyone become a Vtuber but they soon scrapped the idea and just started a Vtuber company with that very essence of "wanting anyone to have a chance to become a Vtuber" carried and taken literally when they debut Vtubers left and right as much as they can. But nowadays times are changing, ANYCOLOR probably already sees the competitiveness within the market so in order to keep up they are also putting more "Effort" on debuting talents and improving their promotions, projects to keep afloat unlike back in the 2018 - early 2020 era. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. I'm not even sure everything I stated is correct so take everything I wrote as my opinion and viewpoint on Nijisanji alone.
@DepressedNousagi
@DepressedNousagi 2 года назад
I wanted to talk about Niji Shanghai and Taipei too but I figured that they failed for different reasons so I couldn't use them as a comparison in the end. But yes, Nijisanji's plan for their expansion was a simple "Drop and just stream" which was not a really effective method for overseas branches.

@@DepressedNousagi Yeah, I also got this info about Nijisanji Shanghai & Taipei on the English wiki lmao. Honestly English wiki or information of Nijisanji in general tends to be lacking a lot of info. Meanwhile the unofficial Japanese wikis of Nijisanji has a crap ton of them even to the smallest detail so to understand Nijisanji moreso during their time in the 2018-2019 era you really have to understand Japanese. Even now, while Nijisanji EN exists, I find that Japanese and Chinese clips of them to discuss more on the interesting side of things and there are also a number of them as compared to the English clips I find which is kinda ironic given how they're EN and they supposed to cater to an English speaking audience, but I guess Nijisanji still has a very Asian-oriented fanbase.

@horiy5020 2 года назад
@@vervietta_gsx1300r Honestly this is just some of the surface. Nijisanji also had projects in JP like Nijisanji Network which was also later disbanded on December of 2019. Network was a resource support project for content creators to utilize Nijisanji management, their only members were Fairys-chan and Tenkai Tukasa who are still active Vtubers and have close relationships with Nijisanji till this day. Nijisanji back then and even until now does have projects in which the main idea was to "support" content creators or similarly affiliated companies. Ichikara/Anycolor even offered tech support to other JP agencies like AniMare and Honeystrap during the early days to the point that people even treat them as sister companies to Nijisanji. Their parent company Ichikara/Anycolor Inc. also had Non-Vtuber projects as an attempt to enter different markets. They had the SLEE RU-vidr Idol group project back in 2020 but the project most likely experienced difficulties in terms of growth so it was then transferred to Iwanaga (former COO of Nijisanji during the early days) in which Iwanaga resigned from the company and started his own one called Yokaze co. ltd. so SLEE was turned over on May 2021 to the sole ownership of Iwanaga and no longer under Ichikara/Anycolor. There's also Yumenographia which is essentially a Virtual hostess club in which you pay to talk to Virtual Hostesses using a VR like a normal Hostess club except with Anime women, There were a lot of info about them but ever since the Unofficial EN wiki of Nijisanji got reformed some English info about Ichikara/Anycolor's previous projects got lost. But bottom line is Yumenographia has been running for some time until it was discontinued December 2021. And now Anycolor only has Vtuber related projects under their wing, besides Nijisanji and VirtuaReal they also now have VTA (Virtual Talent Academy) which is basically an audition based free vocational course to teach people about Streaming and content creation. Training costs are paid by the company and upon completion, the graduate may be given the offer to debut in Nijisanji or freely move to other agencies to try to audition to them. JP's recent wave Ranunculus were former VTA talents.

Why Nijisanji IN failed so fcking bad (as an Indian) - 1. Language must be the number one reason I can think of. Its not there is a lack of people who understand English, but the thing is, they will most definitely *prefer* watching content in the language they have grown up in and use irl most of the time. 2. Weeb culture is literally non existent. I remember when the MHA 3 movie came out. It wasnt available for months, and when it did, it wasnt available for miles around me. The one that was available, was in a *different state* (of course I went there) and even in the theater, there might have been only 3 or 4 people apart from me. Great movie tho. 3. A blatant oversight on Indian history and culture. And I mean not just history and culture in its traditional sense, I mean the things like, what have Indians grown up with watching on TV? What kind of games does an average Indian play? What is actually trending in India? Did you know Nintendo consoles, Game Boy and console gaming in general are practically unheard of? (for the general public, not gamers) So all the iconic games such as Kirby, Pokemon, Animal Crossing are very obscure. Funny thing is, Pokemon is a popular anime here and it airs on TV, but people never know that the mainline games even exist. 4. Indian's relatively recent access to the internet + no awareness about the "internet culture", if you will. Most people are unaware of reddit, discord, stuff like memes, funny numbers and whole lot of "cultural" information that is native with the english-speaking part of the web. Not that this is the reason why no Indian would enjoy anything that is English on the web, its just that stuff like Nijisanji or even streamers for that matter, assume you do know stuff like that. It takes you out of the immersion when you dont understand something, making the genre as a whole less welcoming. 5. Thats it thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

so, a whole year already passed since their disbandment, huh Noor might not have been a gamer material, but I really liked her chatting streams. as for Aadya, I liked her determination to clear hard games despite her not being that good at them with Vihaan I think it was cool how he focused on racing games, which is quite niche content as far as vtubers are concerned (in general too i guess) sometimes I wonder how well would they fare in current Nijisanji if there was an option for them to stay back then they didn't really have many people to intereact with that were able to speak English confidently, just a few ID members and now there is a whole branch with 20 people that would be able to fill that role one thing that wasn't mentioned is that they... weren't really technically prepared for streaming Vihaan had potato pc that pretty much turned him into PNG-tuber, because his actual vtuvber model was rarely used I remember people joking about how his nyancat cover was the first time they have seen Vihaan avatar moving when Aadya streamed, it felt like she was doing it from pedestrian crossing, because you could hear the street traffic on her stream - every single car passing by her house even Noor couldn't escape technical scuff, since she clearly wasn't a technical person other thing that wasn't mentioned is that outside of Aadya they didn't really stream much it wasn't that strange for Noor or Vihaan to not upload anything in few weeks on a side note, it's a weird thing to include Suntory Nomu in 5:13, since she a) is not English vtuber b) she debuted waaaay before vtuber boom, back in 2018

The hatred for anime comes a stigma that "anime = cartoons" (and is viewed as childish) + the lack of popularity contributed by how widespread TV cables are and how 99% of time only cartoons are broadcasted. To sum up my experience on why the Indian branch failed: I fell into the Vtubing rabbit hole in Oktober 2020 after watching Clips of Aki (Hololive JP). Looking for English speaking Vtubers I quickly branched out my viewing to other agencies including Nijisanji. During my search I never once encountered anything about Nijisanji IN or any of their talents (probably because India is the last country I associate with weeb culture). The first time I found out they had even existed was in May 2021 when in Finana's chat someone mentioned LazuLight not being the first iteration of Nijisanji EN and I got curious .. almost a full month after the In branch's graduation. So I guess the worst thing about it was the timing. They debuted before Vtubing really took off in the west and graduated shortly after it finally did. Miko is the best example that a failed start can still be turned around given enough effort but I guess Nijisanji just wanted to close that chapter and move on.

There is a general problem with language specific Vtuber agencies, none really seem to understand. First, you need to know what your target audience is. Second, you need to know how to reach that audience. And third, is the target audience big enough to make sense. The problem with language is that it is not country specific borders that limit it, but how widespread a language is, and this fact can be rather random, as it has to do with how the countries schooling system works, what the major influences are, and how developed a region is. The easiest example would probably something European, like Swedish or German. Would it really make sense to have a Vtuber or agency that targets only Swedish or German speaking people? In both countries, English is the secondary language most people learn, so you have to ask yourself if targeting that specific market even makes sense, because if people there are interested they are more likely to already listen to some English speaking Vtubers. Also, you have to ask yourself if the market is big enough, even if you have an audience that only speaks one set language, because only a small portion of that potential audience can be reached, or would be interested enough to view your talent. In India's case, it is quite obvious what the problem is. English is widely spoken and if someone is interested in that kind of content, they can find it without being targeted at an Indian specific audience. Even multilingual talents have the same problem, and in the end they all follow the same trajectory, speaking the language that gathers the biggest audience. We can see that in NijiKR, where the biggest talents were the ones that spoke Japanese or English, not Korean, so they end up speaking more of the language that guarantees success, instead of the language they are marketed as. Basically, there are 4 language markets for Vtubing (or streaming in general), English, Japanese, Chinese and Spanish or Portuguese. Even if some getting a good audience in specific languages outside of those, they will never reach the same peak as someone in those languages, and it makes total sense, humanity wants to communicate, so we naturally drift toward a lingua franca that is used by the most amount of people, so we can understand each other better.

It's similar to Hololive's EN launch... that was also quite a risk they took, but it paid off for them, and pretty much paved the way for these Japanese agencies to start expanding towards the west. Right now, Nijisanji is also seeing a similar issue with their KR and ID branches... though it's not as bad as what happened to IN. ID talent that already have size amount of EN audience like mika melatika, Bonivier and hanamachia are keeping their style. and lots other niji id livers are trying to learn JP by starting more and more dualingo streams. it seems since after the merge there is a quiet significant growth on not popular ID livers amongs global audience, didn't know when this momentum will stop but i hope it keeps growing. if their attempt to assimilate to JP branch a success, i hope they can go more global. but still it's kinda sad that they talk less and less indonesian now as indonesian myself. but what viewers like me can do is praying for their success and support them, thats it.

@@Aviiixstar7901 From the looks of things, ID is doing relatively okay, at least for the more well known ones that you mentioned like Mika, Bon, and Hana. For KR, the only one I really recognize is Hada. It's good that they're getting more exposure now... I just hope that it's not too late, especially after KR had its first batch of graduations already

The difference with HoloEN is that Hololive knew there was a demand for English vtubers, given the popularity of Hololive with English clippers and the success of talents like Kiryu Coco. It was a risk sure, but it was a calculated risk with lots of factors already in their favor.

Hololive EN wasn't as much of a risk as Nijisanji IN. Hololive already had an English speaking fanbase because of the fervent grassroots clipping and translating community. I think Nijisanji saw the performance of IN and didn't fully understand why it failed before Hololive EN exploded. The reality is that Nijisanji IN was both a marketing failure and a failure to target the right audience. I mean, even Hololive underestimated how much of a presence the EN community could have since it also expanded greatly after Myth's debut. Afterwards, Nijisanji had a better idea of who the EN audience was demographically and what they actually wanted.

In terms of KR, Suha and Roha are doing quite well, Both are able to speak Japanese as well and Collabs with others often. Suha has always kinda tipy toed into JP and EN ID so he has been growing more rapidly since the merge, while Roha does piano playing streams often which alot of people love. Hada does well and is also fluent in English so that helps alot especially as she has been around EN

As an OG Noor fan yeah, I knew most of this. But it's nice to have someone put this all in a video so the newer gen can understand that at one point, Nijisanji india did exist. Also to add a point. I am kinda sad that Nijisanji Korea is not doing to well. And Im assuming it's the reason why Hololive haven't created a Korea branch yet even though there is a HUGE korean fanbase for hololive including big korean clippers. They look at Nijisanji KR, see how they're not doing so well, and are afraid it's going to end up the same for them.

The strategy of Nijisanji really give me a foul bitter taste on my mouth, seriously. I still think that Nijisanji IN should not be disbanded afterall, and Nijsanji KR and ID should not be merged into main branch. I was okay with Nijisanji's approach of very variative ala carte of streamers they have although it is honestly too much; but at least having branch give them identities and uniqueness and chances. Especially ID branch dissolution, I totally hate it.

I remember one time Yuzuki Roa said in her stream that the reason why she joined Nijisanji because she wanted a part time job, and Mito who is called as the queen of Nijisanji in the beginning only stream once in a week and sometimes once in 2 weeks, and from that fact I realize that Nijisanji somekind of "convenience store" chain for streamers that focused on live2D avatars...and they surprisingly expand their brand using the same way as convenience store, and yes convenience store expansion didn't work every single time despite the huge capital needed to do it, ...maybe because it was cheap, Nijisanji think they can simply discard the branch when it didn't work

I guess one of the things that I did not expect was for Ninjasanji ID getting dropped. From all the branches they seemed to have allot of potential. Ironically I got in to Vtubing after seeing the Hannah clip where Mick Gordon gets in to chat. On the bright side now Ninjasanji ID members have a home in the Ninjasanji group.

I won't go into super amount of detail because NijiKR was only mentioned in brief but I think it also shows an interesting point of comparison looking at KR vs the sort of boom KR indies have been getting as of late. NijiKR has been interesting to look at after the fact, since a large amount of graduated members are now back in the vtubing space either in mini-corps who, at least from the outside, seem to be treating with a lot more freedom than Nijisanji do and doing generally a lot more for them. While NijiKR has for the most part crumbled, KR agencies like VGG and V-LUP amoung others have slowly been coming up, and the people who pivoted into indie or even small corps almost seem happier. Hell, V-LUP has PHYSICAL MERCH! NijiKR haven't gotten physical merch at all yet despite V-LUP being like, half a year old comparatively. Two completely different streamer cultures not helped by a KR streamer preference for Twitch.

I really enjoyed them all and an unorthodox pick but my favorite of the 3 was Aadya... 😢I still sometimes think about how it's a shame that they bungled Niji IN. Honestly I think one of the biggest shames about it was that if it had just been allowed to keep going they *might* have eventually found success. There are a lot of vtubers that don't immediately hit success and with the formation of the real Niji EN I think they could have been great senpai and maybe gotten more attention due to well... the EN fanbase looking at Niji after EN happened. Also, I still think the management not knowing what they were doing and rebranding those 3, 3 times was a big issue. They just never marketed/supported them right... or kind of at all. It was earlier days of vtubing sure but it's still sad.
