The Failures of Crash Tag Team Racing - Square Eyed Jak 

I've always thought Tag Team Racing was the first true open world Crash game.

The bowling is unironically the best thing about this game so I'm glad you acknowledged it.

One of those games where I know how flawed it is but I just can't stop playing it xD

Call me sad, but in my childhood, the only Crash games I ever owned was Twinsanity, Crash Nitro Kart and this game (all on the PS2). I was still adolescent when I played this but as a result, it's forever stuck in my head and I won't stop loving this game, despite the many flaws people would point out like the lack of difficulty. I remember the characters, tracks, vehicles, weapons, the music (because Twinsanity made me love acapella and it actually changes based on race performance), and the goddamn quips during the races. I can't not find them funny cause' that's how low (or selective) my sense of humor is (my favourites are from N.Gin). Why I stuck with the races was that I always love it when the characters react to anything during the races. Bump them, hit them with a powerup, pick up a powerup, get blown up, blow someone else up, ram a poor amusement park worker off the track, they'll quip a lot and I love them for it. You can even have the characters do a taunt during a race, with 2 other different taunts when holding a type of powerup. I really have nothing to hate on it. That said, the collectible gags and die-o-ramas were also passable for me but I wasn't playing the game for gags (but I'm a sucker for random explosions via dynamite monkeys). Also, I could be wrong but as I was a kid at the time, I believed the "Uranus" jokes completely flew over me. Seriously. all I saw was an amusement park world all about the planet "Uranus". That was all I got.

I will admit, I had fun with this game, particularly the racing aspect, but the clashing part makes the races too easy, and the platforming elements feel forced and uninteresting and the mini games feel like they don't belong there.

As a kid I honestly quite enjoyed tag team racing, though I'll admit it doesn't even have near the same quality of the other crash racing games .

Say what you want about the game, but you gotta admit Von Clutch is a very underrated character

The GameCube and Xbox versions have 4-player Split Screen mode. PS2 version has no multitap support, with split-screen mode being limited to just two players.

Am I the only one who feels that coco is the most mature thing about this game? Seriously, not only does some of her lines sound like she's finally found someone and went wild, but her idol animation when you go to her involves her doing a whole bunch of sexy poses. One of which is her showing her ass to the camera. Maybe she's auditioning to be the next trophy girl.

This game was a huge part of my childhood, one of the games where I had 5+ copies because I kept scratching them. This game is really good. It's fun.

Beenox seems to really love Tag Team Racing... A lot of the new content in Nitro Fueled was either inspired or taken directly from this game. The costumes, the vehicles, the new Grand Prix levels.

I re-watched your original review for this game to prepare for your re-review and I still enjoy that review, still get a few laughs out of it.

This game brings fond memories and my younger sister, who's in her late teens still loves it. But like you Jak, I just outgrew this game's humour and the gameplay is just to lackluster. It has it's moments, and some of them will make it to Nitro-Fueled, but its charectarization and tone is one I don't want Crash to revisit. Thanks a lot for the re-reviews. Can't wait to see what you think of CTRNF.

I tried playing a used copy of this game, but it was too scratched up to work, and I got refunded. After I watched a 100% playthrough on double speed (except for cutscenes), I can see that it was a mess but not a complete disaster either. My favorite thing in the whole game is Crunch's design in the cinematics. I don't know what it is, but I think he looks absolutely adorable. I can easily say that it's my second favorite design for him, and it's only beaten by Nitro-Fueled.

You should review the banjo kazooie games, and the Coco jokes are still funny to this day!

I’d say Jak says “In my opinion” way to much but when you remember that people will take everything a lot more seriously in reviews then just being a review of the players thoughts, but that’s just my opinion.

One of my favorite things about crash tag team racing is that you can make fart and burp noises during the loading screens

I played the whole game in one afternoon on my PSP a month ago and I’ve already forgotten nearly all the tracks, arenas, characters and music. Seriously, the game is forgettable and bland imo. Great vid, looking forward to CTR NF’s release and your review!

I will say this, I like how Radical Entertainment weren't afraid to change up the formula and try new things even if it didn't really execute that well. Every developer should atleast try new things with their games. It gives them a chance to really learn from what they do with their games and all. I feel like the idea of new and innovative things are really lacking in some of these modern day IPs. CTTR is one of my favorite Crash games even if it is laughably easy and immature. You're original CTTR review was the first review I had watched on your channel and this revisit definitely doesn't disappoint! Keep up the good work Jak! 😎👍

My uranus is ready

In fact the one thing that we all missed, is the characters animation while they're on vehicle. All of them got unique personality, whether you pick up chicken or monkey powerup, doing random things with said item. But yeah, I grew up with this. It's fun, wacky, odd, repetitive, strange, you name it. That Coco voice though...

When i was a kid this was one of my main time killers on my PSP, especially when travelling between places.

I remember playing CTTR with my mentaly disabled cousin when we were kids, we fucking loved it, switching when one of us died, teaching each other secrets we found (we both had a ps2 and cttr) and laughing our asses of on the cinematics. I even remember we lost our shit in the ''Crash falling into a witch pot'' cinematic in Hapily ever faster, today I'm far from a laughing fit when I see it but, it at least shows me how much I've changed, from a kid to a young adult... huh... go figure. Also great reviews Jak, the revisit trilogy was sick and I enjoyed watching it :3

That thing you said about CTTR content being in CTR:NF... there was clearly a trailer involving said content released like a month before this review. Sorry if I sound like an arse, I thought you would be up-to-date on the news for this game. More CTTR karts are coming in future Grand Prix events, as well as Nina, Von Clutch, Pasadena, Chick, Stew and Willie, who've been datamined. Chick and Stew are already in the game as reporters for the Grand Prix events.

Tag Team Racing ran perfectly fine on the PSP for me actually. Then again, i did have a "PSP Pro" version of Tag Team Racing so that might have been why it ran fine

Still can't get over how much I love the on foot animations of crash jumping, running and spinning. Yes....just a game with those animations but a platformer and I love the N Sanity trilogy but something different but not too familiar.

nicely done, once again ^^, its funny because i always tend to look at both this and twinsanity as the black sheeps of the crash series, i did enjoy twinsanity, i do feel it's unappreciated and tag team racing, it's actually interesting because me and a friend who used to live around my neighborhood, would often play it and then it actually hit me, with some of the jokes *aside the many many uranus jokes* kinda felt like they would've been good in twinsanity, while tag team racing hit many stumbles, i do have a soft spot for it, as for the psp version, it was released very early in the psp's life cycle, regardless the overall racing to me is rather basic, nothing too deep, less than 2 weeks before ctr: nitro fueled!!! ^_^

Didnt realize it was that bad. I loved the change crash and cortex got on Twinsanity, and loved that it kept some of that in the tag team racing. I felt it was flat then when I first played, but I found my fun and hunger for more twinsanity being satisfied. But thanks for you I can see that tag team racing was quite flat.

The best part about CTTR, was the Japanese Crash cheat code. I think that was PSP exclusive, if I remember correctly. But that was pretty cool, since one of his idle animations was the Japanese crash dance

I really enjoyed messing around in the hub, but nevertheless, nice review.

When I was little, I used to think that this was a sequel to Twin Sanity. Looking back, I can see why I thought that: It's free roaming and Cortex isn't the main antagonist (unless you count the final cutscene). Eventhough I completely agree with what you said, I still think this game is improvement over Twinsanity. Unlike Twinsanity, Tag Team Racing let's you grab edges/climb ladders, you can change outfits, there is more content for completionists besides crystals and gems, levels are more open world rather than linear. Seriously though, most of the levels are too linear and most of them prevent you from leaving until you complete the whole section. For example, in Twinsanity, if you go to the 10th Dimension, you're stuck there until you beat the final boss. But in Tag Team Racing, if you're in Astro Land, you can simply exit the level whenever you want. I know, I know, this is a terrible comparison but interms of the open world aspect, I prefer Tag Team Racing. Now I don't have Tag Team Racing, although it was my favorite back in the day, it just doesn't feel worth rebuying just for the sake of preparing for Nitro Fueled. I feel like if I rebuy it, the nostalgia wouldn't feel as strong as it used to. Not to mention that I previously said that I would only play the game just to collect the coins and watch the counter go to infinity; but looking back, what purpose does that serve? It's not like I'm gonna get a platinum trophy for that. On top of that, the coins are worthless after you bought everything in the game because all sellers give you one transaction. It's just as worthless as the money in GTA 4 (have tons of money at the end of the game to buy hotdogs derp derp). If they do make another open world Crash game, it better surpass Twinsanity and Tag Team Racing, but NO fixed camera BS like in Mind Over Mutant. Give us an open world Crash game that can compete with Super Mario Odyssey

As a kid, I thought I was playing the game wrong, honestly. I thought "Uh... am I supposed to be able to casually wipe everyone off the track and zoom to first whenever I feel like it? Is it a glitch? Am I somehow cheating?" It was much too easy to win, and I wasn't even remotely good at racing games as a kid, so I thought I somehow broke it in my favor lol. I get that they were trying to bring things down to a level kids could handle, but they seem to have laid it on a little thick with making victory so easy to achieve.

There is some enjoyment to be had with this game, for a short amount of time. Though, I really hate this game, overall. On one hand, I love cortex's lines in this game. Even though, this is where Cortex became massively dumbed down, and less of a threat, as a villan. He became an absolute joke, starting with this game. As did every single other character. Every character got dumbed down, and turned into an annoying, obnoxious idiot. Still, I enjoy cortex more than any other character. Always a joy listening to lex lang's performance as cortex. The racing is horrifically boring. Fun, for 10 minutes, but there's nothing to master, and no skill to it. The platforming was interesting, and probably the most fun I had with this game. I enjoyed smacking around people and looking at the npcs. The park goers. They are hideous creatures. Worth a smack or two. It's also pretty fun to smack the other characters around too. Easily the worst crash bandicoot racing game, and even possibly the worst crash bandicoot game in general. I haven't played boom bang....sooo.....until I have, I won't update my opinion.

Hey Jak I have been a long time fan. When I was 7 I used to watch your videos with my brother who had all the crash games on ps1. Could you consider reviewing harry potter and the socerers stone for ps1 or ps2.

With better driving mechanics and a greater focus on multiplayer, this game could be absolutely amazing. It's one of the few racing games I can think of where you work together while simultaneously competing against each other. Maybe everyone should have the same default turret until you run over an item kinda like mario kart? Or like maybe have some different turret options for each character with different pros and cons.

Crash Tag Team Racing is just one of those games I always felt so weird about but when I replayed it many years ago, I realized just how terrible it was in comparison to its predecessors. I still remember buying Crash Tag Team Racing in the first week it came out and the afternoon I played it, I remember feeling nothing. I didn't feel like I was having fun but part of me still wanted to like the game because it was different. When I beat the game and tried finding some enjoyment for it, I just couldn't. The game just felt so off and didn't give me that satisfying feeling I got when I played CTR for the many years I did and as much as I didn't care for Nitro Kart because of it's botched controls, I still had some fun with that game as well. But Tag Team Racing? Like you, I only enjoyed the tagging assault feature for a good few races before I started getting bored with it. It's sad because everything you said is right about this game. The biggest problem with this game is how dumb down it feels. It feels like it insults your intelligence with the humor, the shallow racing, and just the lack of effort put intio its presentation which is something that never happened to a Crash game, even in a rushed game like Twinsanity. The only thing I can say that I personally enjoyed in this game was playing as Nina Cortex. Despite how some of the characters were turning into annoying blathering messes, I actually didn't mind Nina and I personally enjoyed hearing her quotes and I really liked her Pipe Organ/Candle themed kart. But besides that, this game was just not good in my opinion. It was nothing more than a shallow cash grab and the only people who could enjoy this game to the point of saying it's better than CTR or CNK are little kids who don't really understand quality game design yet and/or blinded by nostalgia for it not realizing how lazily made the game was (especially if they hadn't played it in years). Like I said with your last two look backs, this was a lot of fun to watch again and it was so nice that you kept the slutty Coco gags haha. All I can say is i'm really looking forward to Nitro Fueled and hopefully it's gonna be a grand slam of a remake. They have the tools and assets, now it's time to put it all to good use. Great re-review. :)

I wonder if this game would have worked better completely ditching the linear track format, like maybe the platforming and racing could have merged by both playing in sandbox style courses, with more emphasis on battle modes for a proper 'demolition derby' premise to make it all consistent, guess sort of like South Park Rally but way more polished.

Cortex's weapon is actually very op when you are in 1st place and charge the attack, basically preventing anyone from passing you (and has such a wide range)

Crash Tag Team Racing. Ugh. I remember playing this game when I was a kid as dodgy copy for the Xbox Original, back then I remember enjoying the wackiness of it, like the art style, the platforming, the races and the cutsenses. I remember enjoying it all. Years later (three years ago) when I came across Crash Tag Team Racing again on the PSP, I played through the whole game and completed 70% of it and I thought it was terrible than how I originally thought it was as a kid. I feel like this game is really dumbed down to a level where it just mindless with the tracks and how the gameplay was made. I find the game to be weird and odd looking where it doesn't has that original charm that Naughty Dog did with it as well in Crash Team Racing and I didn't mind Crash Wrath Of Cortex and Crash Nitro Kart as it did still somewhat had that Crash charm to it. I felt like what made the Crash franchise great was charged here. Though there are some well executed ideas in this game like the different costumes as well as the bowling, I think this game just was mainly aimed at kids, shoehorned with cartoon violence and vore as well as toilet and fart jokes. It's a game I can't recommend going back to after growing up, it leaves a gone off taste in my mouth.

Did you know? This game was gonna be developed by Traveller’s Tales, but once again, they were denied a racing game. The only content of CTTR coming to Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled are the cars and the characters, Nina, Von Clutch, and Pasadena. Oh and also Chick and Stew.

I kind of agree, but I somewhat enjoyed the game when I was more younger. I even found a way to get out-of-bounds on those air stunts mini games. I couldn't play one single map at all, but yet I managed to finish the entire game. But yeah, it was a good game overall, perhaps a small spin-off of the CTR game I guess?

Ah man, 2005 was a wacky time in the 2000s. If you think about it, it was an edgy year for gaming. You had games with either darker, grittier, or more adult themes in general coming out. God of War, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sly 3, Jak X, Ratchet Deadlocked, and lord knows how many others. They all came out in 2005 and all had some more funnier or darker stuff added to make them a bit more mature than games before them. I feel as though Crash Tag Team Racing tried to do this by going over the top, which just ended up making most of the humor seem childish. Still though, I consider CTTR to be an alright game. I got it all the way back in the summer of 2008, boy does that take me back!

so i've had many questions about this game. 1. who created those chickens and passadima? were they created by cortex or brio, or did the creators just think anthro characters existed in this world? 2. what the hell is that Wumpa guy thingy? 3. where is aku aku? he's not even a power up 4. why can you only play as 8 characters? it gets boring again and again and again seeing the same guys on every generic race track. 5. why is N.Gin blue and now talks like Egor? 6. why are the powerups and levels so generic? 7. why did the developers reuse the same coin sound from Simpsons: Hit & Run??

The game was originally called Crash clash racing and made by Travelers tales and included Evil crash from crash twinsanity and took place in crash’s mind taking place right after twinsanity

CTTR was mostly my childhood, it was the first crash bandicoot game I ever played. Only until recently playing it and beating it 100% (since I never did as a child) did I see some of the problems it had, how easy it is to clash with others, blow people up to be in first, and then detach at the last second to beat every race, a very disappointing ending, mediocrity with some areas, etc. But at the end of the day CTTR was and will always be one of my favorite ps2 games. (Edit) I haven't ever played CTR nor have I played CTRNK. Until recently.
