Absolutely love these videos! It's so interesting to find out about the folklore - peoples' tales of seeing them are my favourite!

I'm from North Carolina and where I grew up. We always had apple trees and all types of fruit trees on our property. We had apples during the summer just to pull off the tree and eat and during the fall we had apples for baking fresh pies and making desserts and we would have apple butter, apple jellies, dried apples and stewed apples with fresh buttermilk biscuits on winter mornings for breakfast.

Thank you for sharing. So many orchards have been lost in England over the years. So I believe keeping the tales from our childhoods alive is so important so maybe as the children grow they will value these things. And maybe plant a tree or two for the future :)

Yes I think we should replant or replenish apple trees for future generations.❤

I feel deeply connected to these tales. My mother’s maiden name means “apple orchard” and my last name means “oak”. Both of these trees were highly respected and used by Druids.

Wow! This was fantastic! The narrator's voice is so soothing. Watching from a grey and cold Auckland, New Zealand, and this has brought such a warm joy to my day, as well as memories of my childhood in England. Thank you. Nature is everything.

We used to go wassailing when we lived in Somerset, celebrating apple trees, orchards, and cider, of course!

I grew up next to a big, old apple orchard. When my father took me on walks there in the Winter he told me that the little apples left on the trees were called grigging apples. They were left on the trees for anyone who wanted and needed them. After several frosts they were the sweetest apples I've ever had. The best were from Winesap trees. They were sweet and a beautiful deep garnet red color. Sadly the orchard is now a housing development. We lost so much to "progress".

It's not really progress is it :( I remember Devon where we used to live being so full of apple orchards as a kid visiting.... by the time I lived there so many had been razed to the ground and houses built. Such a sad sight ... at least we have our memories and stories

Hello, and thank you for this delightful video all about apple trees. I managed to grow several apple trees from seeds, although, I don't know how they will go, as I live in a sub-tropical climate in Australia. I just adore all your stories and your beautiful narration. If you have any stories about flower fairies, I would dearly love to hear them. Thank you very much and brightest of blessings to you. Happy New Year!

Thank you so much :) Where we are now we have 2 young apple trees we are trying to nurture, but it gets SO hot here in the Summer. Hopefully they'll thrive with extra care. Flower fairies.... I will look for more flower Fairy tales, and these will come in the Real Fairy Sightings episodes. I am doing a series (the 1st one is on here) based on the folklore of flowers we can add to our gardens or homes to encourage Fairies. In that one (Daffodil, Bluebell, Foxglove, Heather, Daisy) there is a fair bit of Flower Fairy folklore :)

@@talesoffeyandfolk Are you in England? I'm in Australia, hence, why I am struggling to grow apple trees. I do hope your apple trees do well. I have listened to the episode of the flowers which we can grow in our garden to attract the fae. I find that very interesting. I recently read a story in a book I have about how a carnation plant had a flower fairy in it. I guess I will have to wait until Spring to get carnations - it is Summer right now and very hot. Can you tell me in which episode you mentioned your own encounter with a fairy? I heard the episode about your husband, Marc's, fairy sighting. Fascinating! Well, don't want this to be too long, so I'll sign off now. Brightest of blessings to you and Marc. Devon from Queensland, Australia.

@@devonbradley4372 We were in Devon in England, but now part way up a mountain in Granada in Spain... why it gets so hot in the Summer here!! My encounter is in the first Real True Fairy Sightings episode.... but it wasn't quite a Fairy, it was something very strange and wondrous really, it still makes me smile :) I'm just in the process of writing up another episode of Fairy Sightings and there WILL be another weird thing that happened to Marc and his best friend, something strange that still puzzles them to this day.... and it happened in a place known for Pixie and Fairy sightings on Dartmoor. Have a beautiful week and sending blessings from the mountain! Kelly and Marc :)

@@talesoffeyandfolk I hope you and Marc are enjoying life in sunny Spain. That is quite a change from Devon, I imagine. Thank you for letting me know where I can locate your fairy encounter. I cannot wait to hear the next episode of Fairy Sightings and about Marc and his friend's encounter on Dartmoor. You have a wonderful voice for narration. Thank you for all the wonderful videos - I mean that from my heart. Have a wonderful week and weekend. Blessings to you.

@talesoffeyandfolk >>> When I was a kid the Presbyterian church we attended would hold _'wassel parties'_ that involved drinking warm apple juice or cider. I barely remember it now.
@talesoffeyandfolk

I am thinking then that this would have its roots in the Wassail... it's a lovely tradition, about hope and community really :)

@@talesoffeyandfolk>>> Yes, Ma'am...👍 BTW, _"wassel"_ was a guess at the spelling. I am not sure I knew how it was spelled back then, and if I did know I have long since forgotten.}

Love your videos! I listen to them every night while falling asleep as your voice is so magical and soothing. We had 3 apple trees in our garden in Pennsylvania where I grew up but without the fairies and love stories apart from Snow White. My grandfather was quite good at grafting apple branches to produce new breeds. Once while in Scotland we went to the town of Aberfoyle to see the grave of The Reverend Robert Kirk which is just across the road from a Fairy Hill. My friends had hiked up there once and one saw a “Brownie” swinging on a tree branch. 😊. They told me the story of Reverend Kirk being carried away by The Fae and the book he wrote called “The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauna and Elves The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies. It’s an interesting story but I found the book to be rather difficult to follow. Perhaps you should this story and could tell it with your own magical words? Thank you for sharing your storytelling with us 😊

Thank you so much for your lovely message, I'm glad the videos help you relax :) That's a good idea about Rev. Kirk's book, I do have a copy, and yes it's tough to follow. but there are a lot of interesting stories in there. Thank you for following our adventures in the realm of the Fey :)

Unfortunately, the story of 'The Apple Tree Man' is not found in English folklore - it was a story created by Ruth Tongue (1898-1981). Although she claimed to have heard the tale from from a farm labourer in 1920 hers is the only known source for the story. And the earliest references to wassailing clearly shows that the purpose of the custom is to wish for a good crop and a prosperous coming year for the owner. Nothing to do with good or bad spirits, pixies or fairies.
@talesoffeyandfolk
@talesoffeyandfolk 9 месяцев назад
As with many things in folklore threads move through time. I'm well aware of Ruth Tongue's reputation, but the story is a good one and how do we evaluate folklore? If one person believes a thing and has that as personal or family ritual then that is personal or family folklore. I suppose it depends on the definition of folklore as one would research it. The Wassail, again a tradition and ritual that has obviously changed through time... yes, to bring blessings for a good crop, and give libation to the land. Where we lived, Dartmoor and surround, the Wassails there were very much to do with the land, the spirits of the land. Again... folklore drifts and expands and grows. And at the end of the day... we all have our own beliefs and that needs to be mutually respected
