Fr. Seraphim illustrates the Genesis account: Paradise, our free will, the state of Adam before the fall, consequences of the fall, and what it all means to us.
Same, I was born to muslim parents but raised lutheran orthodox in Scandinavia, and found my way back to Faith through charismatic non denominational, but here I am, absolutely merged together with Holy Orthodoxy. Glory to God. ☦
MethylamineLD50 We are told by Scripture to pray for one and other and in Orthodox thought, the dead are still “living” but encompass the Triumphant Church. We are the Militant Church in this life.
@MethylamineLD50 If you're going to be consistent with your interpretation, don't ask your friends to pray for you. And therefore neglect James 5:16. 🙄
@MethylamineLD50 I wasn't aware that our brothers and sisters in the presence of Christ are dead, or that they stop being part of His Church. Last I checked God is God of the living, and those who believe in Him do not perish.
@MethylamineLD50 What is your definition of "pray"? Edit: Also, talking about someone's dead grandmother doesn't make your position more convincing. It just makes you look like a jackass.
Thank you for posting this lecture, it is really profound and I like the voice of father Seraphim. If you have more lectures, please upload them as well. Greetings from Serbia
Heh. I can tell Father Rose grew up listening to a LOT of Hollywood radio programs as a boy. He has that distinctive hint of “Mid Atlantic” accent! Sometimes you still find old timers who have it. I find that ... cosmically bemusing. Someone SO authentic bearing such a peculiar stamp of the synthetic pseudoculture in which he was raised. God truly raises His Saints to “...contradict the age they live in MOST”.
He was a student of Alan Watts from which he, I believe, picked up his proficiency in public speaking on spirituality. There’s certainly a bemusing irony in that. This is said with all due respect to Seraphim Rose.
Wait there's a kid in my class who has a similar voice but with a more Midwestern accent, it's pretty interesting to think about, I don't know if the kid is Christian, confused or atheist, he confuses me a lot but again he is a teenager so who knows atp
Christ Is Risen! Someday, when I am brave enough to move on from my community Bible Church and into a sacramental life with actual liturgy, I will surely join the Orthodox Church. ✝️☦️✝️
Don’t wait. I was praying every night for the courage to go back to Liturgical Services but I was done with Roman Catholicism for over a decade. After going to Eastern Orthodox services for a couple months now, I don’t know why I waited so long. They welcomed me with open arms, and the services are truly something beautiful. Good luck and God Bless.
Please don't wait! When God calls us, we must go immediately. Devil will invent thousands of reasons for just to prevent you from the Holy Sacraments of Confession and Eucharist, he will try to kill your soul some way.
Wow, thank you so much. Hearing his voice for the first time. A real miracle - American man becoming an orthodox over many other religions... God have mercy on us !
Thank, you, Father Seraphim Rose. For a very educational talk. Very different from when i was a kid and it was seemingly told as a story. But now the full adult worldview of the Christian faith comes into picture. Very different from how many skeptic, Materialist. Strawman the Christian faith in these times we live. But thank you father.
Yes the mattering Atheists. I'm not a materialistic human male in any sense Im almost there. But I don't matter. Nope. The world isn't what matters. That atheist thinking is toxic to faith! Reasoning is also bad enemy to faith!
We are blessed to have had him so close to our days and times of this current tribulation. He foresaw these evil trends and provided light to get through. His work becomes more relevant as time goes on.
@@quasihomestead “Weak” men only produce faulty behaviour in women insofar as they willingly grant them rights beyond those they have been granted by God - i.e. the right to vote, or to disobey their husbands without facing reprisal.
I’m a catechumen and am continually amazed at how sound the orthodox doctrine is. The orthodox interpretation of scripture when it pertains to the role of women is deeply edifying
Has anyone else noticed how similar St Seraphim and Robin Williams - the comedian sound. Its amazing... if you close your eyes and just listen you'd think they were the same person.

I was just reading Rose's biography and in it is written a quote from a blind man "Rose read with such clarity that I almost had the illusion that he was explaining things" and oddly enough while listening to this talk I had to remind myself repeatedly he was reading instead of explaining things. Also Alan Watts popped in my mind several times as Rose sounds a lot like him, and guess what, Rose was a student from Alan Watts. Such strange parallels.
This was amazing. Byzantine catholic here. However we are in communication with the RC church. I never knew the RC believed that way. Everything said here sounds very familiar to me.
0:33 the logos is our paradise regained. He is our bread of life, the logos is not energies, but the mediator between our heavenly creator and he is the potter,we are the clay. Jesus was the clay of the logos and our Only mediator between our true father of lights our father of our salvation.
Christ is Risen! I am very grateful for this presentation! Love Fr Seraphim’s book on the Holy Fathers on Creation and Genesis (available for purchase from St Herman’s). Am also now reading the text online (purportedly transcribed by an attendee from tapes not available to be heard) of his Orthodox Survival Course. Great too! However per a former monk there apparently this is a a pirated and unauthorized copy. Three questions please for Orthodox Witness re this wonderful tape: 1. what book or paper is Father reading from? 2. when and where given? 3. Have you officially asked the Fathers at St Herman Press for permission and a blessing to publish and been denied or not asked? If denied, do you know if they have future plans to publish or share? Thank you in Christ!
The answer to the question did God endow woman with different characteristics is yes. The word for helper that was used in the ancient Hebrew is not helper as an assistant, but helper as in someone who rescues
I believe no recording of that lecture exist. But his manuscripts where published after his death. You can listen to audio version of the book here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ssiUPXj501c.html
Could you remake this video without the questions and answers. This is a great lesson whichI would like to keep. I would like yo be BE ABLE to purchase it from you.
Maybe the clothes God made for Adam and Eve was utterance of God's mercy toward them (because they were deceived and not consciously the enemy of God) rather than God changed their nature. And some teologians see that skins as anticipation of Jesus Christ redemption as covering believers with new clothes given as a symbol of new life in Christ. Who can do the one and accurate interpretation of Genesis? In that the third chapter God repeats what snake said and it opens many questions...and God here ( in the begining of the mankind) is named as Jahve while in some other book of The old testament Jahve took Israel as his people when the earth was divided according to the number of God's sons. How can one base his understanding on literate meaning of those two incompatible report? The literate interpretation has great problems and also some interpretations or parts of interpretations of early fathers. As fr. Rose discart Catholic's view, also wasn't simpatise the Greek orhodoxy...it is obvious that he went into one close system of faith represented to him by somebody from Russian orthodoxy and he was satisfaid with that. In his case we can see how even great monks can be onesided man without understanding even others from the same sort of faith. I wonder what will he said if he would be in todays Russia. Maybe he will be able to learn something from others branches of Christianity and from others in general without beeing distracted from his own faith and his own christian community.
Two points of discussion at which to nitpick as a Catholic: I believe the reason for the claim that Man's Fall is a loss of supernatural gifts of Grace above his natural state is to preserve his nature from mutation; sin is not so powerful that it can make something into something else, ontologically different - Man is still Man after the Fall. Only the moral cowardice of modern "theologians" has lead to the hideous evolutionary interpretation which Fr. Seraphim rejects; it is not a feature or consequence per se of the paradigm. The [admittedly off the cuff, quasi-private] remarks included at the very end lend themselves to confirming my suspicion that the terms "Created Grace" and "Divine/Uncreated Energy" are synonymous, at least with respect to Theosis.
Why it puzzles you..?We live in sinful times..Most of later generations live in sin,yet they claim to keep their traditions plus the religion of their fathers but its just a lie..Because their works and actions speak differently..So in a way they dont even understand it..They are deceived by the spirit of the times, like everybody, like us too..We think we good..Are we really???
At age 22 in 1956 and while he was still at Pomona College, Rose came out as gay. During a romantic relationship with Jon Gregerson, Rose was exposed to the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. While the relationship lasted a significant period, Gregerson lost interest in Orthodoxy despite Rose's growing interest. Rose ultimately terminated the relationship and later commented on the period prior to his conversion, saying "I was in hell. I know what hell is." Rose is reported to have not externally expressed his sexuality following his conversion. Rose's sexuality was a topic of controversy among some Eastern Orthodox faithful after it was publicized in Cathy Scott's 2000 biography Seraphim Rose.
@@rippedgoat3587 nothing that's going on the churches is established by the apostles. And the gospels are according to markus, Matthew, luke and john but not written by them. The gospels are no eyewitness testimonies. And the gospels are largely myths. And the old testament is 100% mythology. Nothing really happened.
@@MaulqasmPK - It comes down to a matter of perspective. From our point of view-with this "fruit of the knowledge of good and evil" that we savor-it is indeed a "fall." But that's not what the narrative calls it. It's not what God calls it. So we have one circumstance, two opinions. "Fall" implies something went wrong-and our Judeo-Christian culture has built entire theologies on guilt and shame. But what if everything went perfectly, according to plan? Then God's response might be, "Trust me, I know what I've done. Don't worry, it will all work out." (Rom. 8:28)
@@tedclemens4093 I think I was revealed this along the way. Lucifer was one of the First angels created and he heard the plan for humanity and he said to himself. God has lost his mind, I think I know better. So, since he thought he could know better than what created him he started a rebellion. He convinced 1/3rd of the heavenly host to side with him and against God. I don’t think they knew the full consequences of what would happen. So, they attempted to ruin Gods plan and put Lucifer on the throne. He was cast out of heaven and was thrown to the earth with the other rebel angels. So, he sees Adam and Eve and the pet snake they have and says to himself. If I possess the snake that they trust I can convince them to eat the Fruit and know that Good and Evil exists. This means that Satan was The creator of evil. Not God. He’s the “Father of Lies” Since he couldn’t overthrow God. He instead said “I will ruin all his plans and make the man and woman hate him and blame him for what I do” and he knew much of Gods plan before the Fall. See, God is all knowing and he knew this would happen before Satan devised this plan. I believe that’s a big reason he was cast out of heaven. He could no longer be in heaven because he created evil through his own freewill. He can choose to do good just like us, he just willingly does evil. All the angels can do whatever they want. But, most of them only wanted to serve God out of humility. Pride is what lead to his fall and desire and pride is what lead to ours. We desired to be God. We desired to be wise. Now, God gave us paradise and he commanded us to not eat from the tree. If they hadn’t been so focused on external things, they’d have been able to just tell the snake “No” God said we can’t eat from that tree. It was a test. God knew Satan was on the earth and God knew the serpent was possessed. So, he spoke to them like children. They didn’t take responsibility for their actions, so like children they were cast out of paradise. Just as he cast Satan out of heaven for disobeying. He’s so gracious that even after he has given us life and paradise and we mess that up. He allows us to still live and do whatever we want. Next thing we know Cain kills Abel. The rest is history. Been the same ever since. Jesus Christ came so we might receive eternal life even after our fall. He’s given us a second chance in the form of another test. I’m aceing this one brother I hope.
@@tedclemens4093 “Nothing is greater than God, including evil, and evil results when the free will of God’s creation is directed against God and thereby engenders evil. This is precisely what happened when the light-bearing morning star (Lucifer), fell away from the Source of goodness, and became the evil one, Satan. Lucifer, by imposing his own will, found himself in darkness. Since his power is based in falsehood, he can only influence us by convincing people that he is as powerful as God. Yet his power is finite, and good will eventually triumph on the Last Day.“
I love the EOC but I am finding that getting a direct answer to more of the esoteric mysteries of the Bible by the EOC is a talk in circles saying everything but nothing at all.
Prayer and Revelation, not human wisdom and reason, is how we know. It’s strange conceptually to other people today (as I thought it was as well), but in practice it’s a stark Truth.
@@sonsoftheedelweiss72 I know that it has now been 2 years since you asked this question, and that it looks like you've already had your question very satisfactorily answered. But I just wanted to add that Orthodox Theology is very much a "Mystical Theology". And this is because God is so far above us, that we cannot totally understand His mysteries. God Himself tells us in Isaiah 55:8-9, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." So, by its nature, it would be impossible to get direct answers to these very esoteric mysteries. Because we, as still finite human beings cannot fully comprehend the infinite mysteries of God.
Fr Seraphim, God rest his soul, misrepresents Catholic doctrine when he says that after Adam fell he went back to the state he was made in (38.05). Those interested in the truth of the matter would do well to refer to the official Catechism of the Catholic Church, on the Creation of Man, and The Fall.
Yeah I never heard that before. Everything fr seraphim said I pretty understood as a catholic. Seemed like what I believe. Then that weird tidbit was thrown in. I was raised byzantine catholic so we have a lot of the early fathers involved in our liturgical practices. Still though, when I go to a RC church I've never heard any theology embracing evolution.
