I think of This Means War as a spiritual prelude to Beartooth. Even the drum patterns are similar to what would later turn up on Beartooth's first record.

That's because Caleb literally wrote that entire album. Just like he does with every Beartooth album (with the exception of "Disease". He had some help with that).

It was weird. I saw blessthefall at a Taste of Chaos show sometime around 2008. Had my BTF shirt on and was walking back from the bathroom and some random dude in an Avenged Sevenfold shirt (who I also like) sang "Blessthefall is gay" in a the melody of one of their songs as he walked by me. I said nothing to this guy, didn't even notice him till he said it. It was unprovoked and completely out of nowhere. I just shook my head and laughed, which seemed to bother him too as he walked away with a pissed off look on his face. I wasn't even mad or offended, I just found it comically stupid. It was bizarre and was the only time that's happened to me at a show, but it epitomized that era of gatekeeping. I stopped going to music forums to avoid all that stuff. Just let bands do their thing and have fun. That's what music is all about.

When Johnny left, I left to. I recently just revisited their 3rd album in my life and now @ 30 Years old I love that album. I did follow Caleb to Beartooth and everything, But attack attack lost me when Johnny left :3 he was attack attack to me.. He brought in that Neon Pop punk shit that I loved about AA #1. I mean i was still around for 'Last breath' and how Caleb was talking about changing his Vocals up and actually trying a lot harder. I liked Last Breath and remember it being kind of heavy in it's own way, Like Wetzel said in the interview. Never heard a country like tone meets electronic vibe before but that’s just me. To help clarify or at least somewhat understand some of what John was saying... I think John was suffering from a form of OCD. What many don't know is that OCD can manifest itself in a myriad of ways with the most irrational obsessions and worries--in this case, John obsessing about being gay/not being gay. It's a very common obsession in the OCD community. The way he explained his thoughts did come off as very erratic though but that just shows his deteriorating mental state. I hope he has gotten the help he needed at the time.

The problem with This Means War I'd that it's too heavy. Yeah it's more heavy than the previous albums, but that also means it's the least heavy. Because when everything's heavy, nothing is heavy. The synth and pop vocals breaking up the brutality was the reason why it was so heavy.

Caleb was young for a front man, but hey they did tour with Our Last Night, who had Trevor, who was 12 when he joined his band, so yeah Also AC-130 is probably a reference to the popular Call of Duty kill streak perk that would call in a AC-130

I agree with you in the sense that This Means War didn't do much for them past the initial release, at the time. 'At the time' being crucial here. If we talk about the album NOW, I completely disagree and I think it's just as crucial and legendary of an album, maybe not in terms of AA but for the metalcore scene as a whole now. Don't forget that This Means War was essentially birthed Beartooth. Once Beartooth became a prominent name in the scene, as well as Caleb. I think the album turned out to be much more important than it was. Sonically it isn't ground breaking by any means, but if Caleb didn't start singing, and This Means War didn't exist. Beartooth wouldn't be one of the biggest bands in the scene Timing is everything
