The art by Alan Lee is truly beautiful. For many years I wished that The Silmarillion got the same hardcover treatment.

The Gondolinian tale is one of the most visually beautiful of Tolkien's tales, if that makes sense - the images he describes to the reader are just... gorgeous. Even if I admittedly never really felt for the characters in the particular tale* the same way I feel for those in CoH and BaL, the tale itself, the locations and the events are awe inspiring. (*Unless if we count Aredhel.)

Very sad that Turin never meet his cousin Tuor. They sort of pass each other without realising they related, of-course Turin was under the spell.

Turkish translations It's too late for us. We should wait at least a year and a half. You're so lucky. Getting foreign language version from abroad is even too expensive

wish they made the dust cover glossy like the old copy of Children of Hurin instead of going the "the hobbit rough paper" route

Do these match with the new 2020 illustrated editions(Lord of the Rings+The Hobbit, Unfinished Tales, and the upcoming Silmarillion illustrated)? Not sure if I should buy or wait and see if there’s another release...

A beautiful video really 🌹, do you advice me to buy it bro? because I’ve seen a lot of ppl saying it’s not a finished story or you find half of the stuff written in it in other book etc, so what do you think 🤔 is that true or not?

update, i have the softcover and my god it still doesn't match AT ALL. the spine is completely different and the book is much taller than the other illustrated editions. OCD nightmare.

Are there any poems in this Book, as it was in Beren and Luthien??
@TalkingTolkien
@TalkingTolkien 6 лет назад
No, there are no poems, sadly. The Lay of the Fall of Gondolin does exist (some of it was published in The Lays of Beleriand) but it's still not been published in full. This is the reason Christopher Tolkien gave in Lays of Beleriand, and I assume nothing's changed: "I do not give this poem in extenso here, since it does not, so far as the main narrative is concerned, add anything to the Tale; and my father found, as I think, the metrical form unsuitable to the purpose."

Hey man, I m a bit confused about this book, maybe you can help me out:) I started reading it and since i always want to know where the story takes place i have my tolkien maps with me ;) So i read the first story and i dont really follow, then i read trough tolkien pages to understand the story and some important and really cool story parts are missing. So, am i right that i cant expect the whole story with every detail? Do i have to read every version and every version misses/adds other parts? best
@jmckasyru
@jmckasyru Год назад
Since no one has replied, I'll give an answer. Each version of this tale, like many others, have varying degrees of details and depth. There are varying versions of The Fall of Gondolin in The Book of Lost Tales, Unfinished Tales and The Silamillian. There are probably other versions in other titles that I didn't mention. It sounds like this volume binds all these versions under one cover. The Unfinished Tales version has the most depth and details, but it only gives a small part of the beginning, that of Tutor passing through some of Gondolin's seven gates. So, it's frustrating not to read of the actual battle. That makes the battles of Minas Tirith and of the Pelenor Fields look like small skirmishes. However, the other versions of the story give a substantial amount of details. Have you read this whole book by now? What do you think of it?

It was my understanding that Tolkien never finished the Children of Hurin that it was just as incomplete as the other two stories, and that it was his son who edited the story together from all the different drafts, and that he also had to bridge in the gaps story with his own material. I love the world Tolkien created, but for me, the new version of the story of Beren and Luthien felt like a waste, his son should have done the same thing he did with The Children of Hurin on these two new books.
@TalkingTolkien
@TalkingTolkien 6 лет назад
Christopher Tolkien didn't create any original material for Children of Hurin, since The Silmarillion he's been adamant he wouldn't do that. Hurin worked better as a narrative because there were fuller drafts to work from. Unfortunately this wasn't the case with Beren and Luthien and Gondolin, and because he wouldn't allow any original content to be created, there is no complete narrative of these stories. Sadly, what we have is as good as it's going to get.
