Seeing Verna leave her own feather with the orchids for Lenore always makes me tear up a little. As others have pointed out, the other Ushers get an item that signifies their hubris and how it got them killed. But Lenore did nothing to deserve her fate: it was decided for her by a selfish grandfather before she was even born. So her item is something Verna symbolically took from her own body (signifying her own pain at having to take Lenore's life) and flowers, a typical and respectful tribute to mourn the beloved dead.
As tragic as this was, the fact that Verna put a bag of coke over Frederick's gravestone was hilarious. She held him in so much contempt that she couldn't help roasting him even after death 🤣
I like the contrast between how she places the coke - without ceremony or even touching the grave - and then how she almost ritualistically places the raven feather and white rose on Lenore's grave. Contempt for the father, love and sorrow for the daughter.
@@katherineheasley6196 even she showed some respect while putting the other tokens on Frederick's siblings' gravestones. See how delicate and gentle she is when doing it. With Frederick's gravestone, though, she does it with clear disgust, trying to avoid touching it as if it were literal fresh shit.
Oh Verna _detested_ Frederick, you could tell that from the fact she, by her own admission, broke the rules slightly with his death; she’s not meant to be that directly involved, but she made an exception for him. She could respect and empathise with the others, flawed as they were, but Frederick earned her ire, and that was never going to end well for him. 😆
I love how Verna strokes the raven feather affectionately before placing it on Lenore’s grave. It’s tragically poetic to see there are souls even death has a problem claiming!
She was the best character next to Verna and how Verna explained her choice to save her mother and defy her father has impacted many people because of her was so touching and bittersweet and props to the actress Kyleigh Curran who is amazing as well in doctor sleep and even won a Saturn Award for it
The Lenore Verna scene was so well done. Was a nice take on Death as usually Death is portrayed as non-judgemental. In TFOTHOU, her judgement is 100% clear on all of them and Lenore is the only one she's kind to.
@@duckheadbobI think it's possible that was a roundabout way of Verna calling Roderick and Madeline 'soulless' for their greed considering the constant presence of ghosts throughout the show. Yeah, they could all be visions caused by Verna or Roderick's worsening dementia, but I have a hard time believing that in a setting where an obviously supernatural being like Verna is running around that things like souls and ghosts are out of the question.
The objects are meant to represent the hubris of the ushers, except for Lenore, who was the only rose in a bush of thorns. So she quite literally gets a rose, along with one of Verna’s feathers as her tribute.
the way she places it so gently and reverently on lenore's grave is so good like. of all of them lenore is the only truly good one, and verna knew that. the others were little shits that probably didn't deserve to be brutally killed but business is business, so verna's tributes are petty but respectfully placed, and then frederick's she just carelessly tosses down bc he Definitely deserved it.
Hate how Lenore had to die too but a deal is a deal his bloodline goes with him.. I’m glad Verna gave her some peace saying her mother will be doing great things saving countless lives in the future all because she called ambulance and saved her from her dad ❤
@@ACinemafanatic He DID seem to care for his granddaughters more than the others(possible cause she was not just his ONLY grandchild, but LEGITIMATE as well, though I do feel he cared for her PERIOD)
I've felt the most sorry for her mom...... Survived the acid rain, so much pain and her husband tortured her with drugs and physically too and she also loses her daughter.....
I love how for most of the graves, she places the mementos normally. She places Lenore's super respectfully and gracefully, and then just shows no tact with the bag of coke, fitting for Fred's acts.
Funniest part was throwing coke on Freds grave. That wasn't even his most prized possession, but she just loathed him so much she felt thats all he deserved.
Aside from the fact that Verna carefully strokes the feather before placing it on Lenore’s grave, of all the Usher children whose objects she carefully places on their headstone she just carelessly throws Frederick’s on top of his without touching. Nice touch to show even in death she has nothing but contempt for him
Verna, giving her farewall gifts to the other Ushers: "Here you are, my dears." Verna, giving her farewell gift to Froderick: "Snort THIS, you $%^%sucker!"
I Thy soul shall find itself alone ’Mid dark thoughts of the gray tombstone- Not one, of all the crowd, to pry Into thine hour of secrecy. II Be silent in that solitude, Which is not loneliness-for then The spirits of the dead who stood In life before thee are again In death around thee-and their will Shall overshadow thee: be still. III The night, tho’ clear, shall frown- And the stars shall look not down From their high thrones in the heaven, With light like Hope to mortals given- But their red orbs, without beam, To thy weariness shall seem As a burning and a fever Which would cling to thee for ever. IV Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish, Now are visions ne’er to vanish; From thy spirit shall they pass No more-like dew-drop from the grass. V The breeze-the breath of God-is still- And the mist upon the hill, Shadowy-shadowy-yet unbroken, Is a symbol and a token- How it hangs upon the trees, A mystery of mysteries!
A small detail I might be imagining but I feel like she had a little care when placing the mementos on the headstones, except for Lenore who had obvious care, while for Frederick she just goes “Here’s some coke asshole🖕🏻” and tosses it on the headstone.
I love how Augustus and Roderick's paths completely contrast each others : ° In the short term Roderick acquired vast money and wealth for himself and his children beyond his wildest dreams, because he was clever enough - or rather ruthless enough to know that blowing the whistle on his boss would have likely have cost him more financially - where as Augustus lost his job trying to do what was morally the right thing to do . °Ultimately though in the longrun while Roderick amassed great wealth and a corporate empire for him and his family , he was emotionally distant from his own childeren - who ultimately died as a result of his own greed -on top of everything else for all his wealth Roderick was miserable and self loathing in the end - where as Augustus - while not rich had a husband and children who loved him , had a strong bond and were genuinely happy . It took a while but ultimately Augustus got the last laugh in the end by just being a decent human being. His revenge is he gets the satisfaction of knowing just how miserable the Usher family were , which is why in the longrun he doesn't leek Rodericks confession : he's the better man and he knows it .
@@mattybrunolucaszeneresalas9072 Normally yes . This case was somewhat different. No-one would have believed Augustus's story regarding Madeline and Roderick's death , even Roderick's confession about the murder of his boss could have come into question - given Roderick wasn't exactly sound of mind. On top of that things would have been much worse for everyone if Augustus had given Roderick's confession to the public . Given that Roderick's assets had come from illegal activities- including murdering the former boss , its likely all assets would have been seized ( meaning that Morella would not have been entitled to a penny of Usher money - therefore she would have never been able to make a nonprofit organisation that helped people suffering from physical abuse ).
The first actor in this scene is Carl Lumbly and he voiced Martian Man Hunter in Justice League The Animated Series. He even played Martian Man hunter's father in the live-action Supergirl TV show
A Mask A phone A cat collar A heart device A golden scarab A drug paralyzer A raven feather with a white orchid Two sapphires A glass Verna's last words are actually from E.A.Poe's "Spirits of the Dead" poem
SAME! Roderick seems like the type of guy to either think he's going to live forever or buy an entire plot just for his family. I can only imagine that there would be a lot of people lining up to some vandalism as revenge for what some of the Ushers did.
Verna is a vision. A vision that is subjective. She is neither evil nor kind. She is the personification of KARMA . Those who do bad deeds sees her as evil , those who are harmless sees her in light . This is how the concept of heaven and hell works. Heaven is the peace of mind that will make you happy even if you have nothing in this materialistic world and hell is the feeling of emptiness you have even if you are the emperor of a mighty empire .
Well, I know one thing, out of all the deceased Ushers Lenore’s the only one who died peacefully and went to heaven. All the other Ushers, given how arrogant, cruel, and self-centered they were, went straight to hell lol
Something I still wonder about is what exactly killed Lenore while she passed on peacefully? The other Usher kids were killed by hubris and things that could be written off as by their own hands/accidents, while Verna instigated it without getting involved much (like she influenced Frederick to become paralyzed, but wasn't the one to bisect him herself). So, it makes me wonder if Lenore died from a random brain aneurysm or something? Because there was no previous scenes that hinted at what can kill Lenore in a peaceful way, and the deal Roderick made didn't specify how the Usher kids should die...
Verna just had to take Lenore’s life, like it was a deal from her grandfather. No matter who you are, if you have Usher’s DNA, you just have to die from the prophecy. Lenore did nothing to harm anyone, but she had Usher’s DNA, that tragically was brought her to death. But Verna still has empathy for her, she was young, so Verna told her everything she should’ve known after she died. There’s no sign for Lenore, just her having Usher’s DNA is the sin.
She says to a couple of the others that she could've done it peacefully while they were asleep, and even specifically says she could've given Frederick a heart attack if he hadn't been such a dick. I assume she killed Lenore by means of something quick and painless, like a brain aneurysm.
They were always meant to die because of the deal the twins made, but they went out as brutally as they did because of the choices they made. Verna even tells some of the others they could have had a more peaceful death.
Also, the gifts are symbolic. Every item, in a way, represents the hubris of each Usher (with the expection of Lenore). For Victorine, it was the heart mesh she wanted to be famous over. For Roderick, it was the glass he used to toast this whole wretched deal.
I mean, what would people do when they pass by the tombs when no one's nearby and spot a gorgeous mask, an iPhone, a frickin gucci collar, a bug made put of gold, and two blue saphires?
I believe the feather is from the Egyptian end of life belief that the gods weigh ones heart/deads against a feather. Lenore is the only pure soul with her heart being lighter than the feather.
Everyone is very right about Verna and the placements on the graves, but can I just say that I loved that this series ended with Auguste standing in front of Usher's grave and only saying: "Get fucked, Roderick."
I'm 8 months late, but I wanted to say Lenore's grave is also the only one we see the name of as she places the feather upon it, as if to further signify that unlike the others Lenore is the only one deserving of recognition by Death. While Roderick, the only other name we see, only matters after Death has already finished her business. 10/10
Verna tells him that in another life Frederick would have been a great dentist. Verna can visualize people's possible futures if they had taken another path.
What would people do when they pass by the tombs, no one else is nearby and spot a gorgeous mask, an iPhone, a fucking gucci collar, a bug made put of gold, and two blue sapphires?
I mean its symbolism at this point, whether those are actually real or not. Even if it was, its the graves of one of the richest families in the world, whether someone takes those or not wouldn't matter.
To me, I visualize it as the final "no" to Madeline and Roderick's desire for immortality. Talking to Auguste was Roderick's last attempt to be remembered, and Auguste leaving it there is like "you know what? you're not worth it." Which is big for Auguste, who spent his whole life legally chasing after them and Fortunato.
@@victoriawordham2330 So the whole point of the interview with Auguste was to be remembered and tell the world about Verna? And Auguste decided that since Rod and Maddeline chose to be such horrible people, they did not deserve to be remembered, only forgotten.
He pretty much explains why in the beginning of the clip: at the end of the day, Roderick's "confession" was no different from a desperate attempt by a madman to rationalize and excuse his crimes. And as far as Auguste is concerned, hearing the confession would bring no closure to the people whose lives were destroyed by the Ushers' greed.
@@Damodred_Heiress I like to think Prospero's death was always destined to happen that way, (note Roderick's saying the acid was eating through the pipes and tanks and would've burst at any moment) and that Verna's intervention was solely to lessen the body count of innocents at the party, and to see if Prospero would pick a different choice.
Okay you may or may not agree with this theory, and yes I know they were cursed but I am going to put it out anyway. I have a theory that, you know how Roderick was diagnosed with the same form of dementia that his and Madeline's mother had when she died. So my theory is that as Roderick's dementia progressed he killed all six of his children and his favorite grandchild Lenore, and when Madeline came to help him, Roderick was too far gone that he poisons and kills her. Thus gouging out her eyes to put gemstones in and cutting out her tongue so she have a chance to taunt him. And when Roderick is with Auggie giving him his confession, his grief and fear over what he had done was so powerful that he manifested a zombielike image of Madeline that both he and Auggie could see. Because if you think about it, the Zombie Madeline was kind of giving Auggie that chance to escape before she quite literally brought the house down on top of her and Roderick.
I'd like to think he tipped both camille and perry, give them ideas. Then pushed vic into doing what she did. How about tammy, freddie and leo? He killed them literally maybe. Then there's lenore, choked her to death? That's heartbreaking. Mads don't matter, she's the devil.
@@jimnoelzarate5765One things for sure, if Madeline were in the place of Verna, she wouldn't even give a single fuck about Lenore. The deaths of the Usher family would be more brutal.
@@joshjosh2575 I think that Verna would have given Madeline another deal if she didn’t try and loophole her the way that she did. Because Verna aka Raven did say that Madeline was one of her favorites.
