Ramon Abbas perfected a simple internet scam that helped him launder millions of dollars, riches he shamelessly flaunted on Instagram. Better known as @Hushpuppi, the young Nigerian became a fixture among the global elite as fashion houses showered him with gifts. But his fame would ultimately be his downfall.

Actually, yes he did. He came from a poor part of town with little money, and saw that others had more and wanted it at any cost. That becomes an addiction, thus he moved to KL initially then Dubai to get a piece of international cash. His flaunting of wealth is re-affirmation of his self-importance. This conspicuous consumption is all part of the same issue. In our society, money and opulence implies power but that was not the initial driver. The 'Yahoo boys" are all after quick bucks and a nice lifestyle.

Unfortunately hard work is not directly proportional to wealth. Assuming he spent that energy as a software developer in Nigeria, he may probably never experience a tenth of the wealth he had unless he got a big break to a well paying job most likely in Europe or North America. Had he started a business in Nigeria, he may not have had enough capital to take it to the level that can give him the wealth he enjoyed as well. All the same, the situation being super difficult does not justify scamming people too.

If someone truly has that much money, and they've worked hard for it, yet still find the need to seek affirmation online from strangers - there is something deeply unsettled within them. Sharing one's passion with others, such as music or writing is a wonderful thing to do; however, I never understand this hype/flex culture. There is nothing appealing about it.

You haven't been much online, have you? Like they said in this video, I know so many people that worked very hard for their money, rich and also poor, and a lot of them love to flex their financial accomplishments online. I also find this corny, but it's incredibly common human behaviour. They are seeking validation to satisfy their egos. The rich flex about their trips on a private jet, while the poor flex about the second hand iPhone 8 that they afforded to buy after saying for 6 months. The behaviour is the same, the only difference is the amount of money displayed.

That wealth parading (false or plundered, most rich people who earn their money through hard work usually do not flash it like that) is the model many African children and young adults have these days. You ask them "what do you want to be" and most answer "rich". They copy their elders and leaders, and if the hype is to flash wealth, cars, designer clothes, shoes and accessories, etc, that would be what they want for their future, at all costs. That just hints a difficult future for these children.

This is what everyone says, when a wealthy criminal gets caught. But it's deeper than that, you don't make that type of money alone, so there others you have deals with, and you can't just say I quit, and cancel the deals, if you do, you might create as much trouble for yourself, equivalent to going to jail. Didn't you hear what he did to his partner that tried to steal his connection? That's the type of people he is around and he is.
