With the early release of Steel Dawn, the Fallout 76 DLC, we are now front and center to the Brotherhood of Steel in Appalachia. Walking all the way from Lost Hills, California, this chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel seems to be confused about the lore of the Fallout universe. This is the Fallout 76 Steel Dawn rant.

I keep seeing this argument in the comments so I am going to address some things here. People are saying that New California would be accurate for a home location for the Appalachian Brotherhood. As in it makes sense that the BoS in 76 calls the area that. Vault 15 wouldn't have its big blowout until 2097, which is roughly 5 to 6 years before the events of Fallout 76. The area wouldn't be known as New California until after Shady Sands was considered a developed town. It would be called the Core Region, or it would be split between the two commonwealths, Northwest and the Southwest respectively. Any information you are providing about that being different has been retconned due to Fallout 76. It is referred to as New California at the end of the first game because it is foreshadowing the events of Fallout 2. Also, the first Fallout takes place 70+ years after 76. Meaning it makes complete sense if this area is called that in Fallout 1. The Brotherhood of Fallout 76 left Lost Hills in 2103, which would make it the first major excursion of the chapter. Unless the excuse is they just nicknamed the area that, it is likely the BoS would be calling it the Core Region. I hope this helps.

Given that From what we know of Rodger Maxon from fallout 1 alone. He was the man who ordered the march from Mariposa to Lost hills. Specifically cause he was worried that a nuclear bomb from china would wipe them all out. I don’t see why he wouldn’t be willing to risk his family, and friends further to spread across the wastes and make sure that should they be attacked. At least some parts of his family would survive. John would then see these actions as idiotic, and not as a bid to not put all of one’s eggs in the same basket. So when he takes over the brotherhood becomes more closed off. Though admitantly I am also re reading the fallout 1 logs from Rodger Maxon in a bubble.

Bethesda has said multiple times that the lore is flexible. Flat out, they’ll change it based on what story they want to tell. I mentioned this every damn time someone bitches about this. They also do this with comics, and literally every other storytelling medium. Retcons exist. They’re a thing. Why do you give Bethesda absolutely no slack to do it, when it’s a thing in almost every other thing that has lore? I mean the correct answer is “fallout fans have to complain about fallout, you are not allowed to just have fun.” but can we not pretend there’s no massive bias involved? Fallout 2 had a damn tardis. Godzilla, too, iirc. It reconned Shit from 1, and got shit for it at launch. Because fallout fans. Fallout fans never change.

I actually like them the best. Like, let's be real, even in NV Obsidian kinda hinted that the brotherhood's ideas became dated since the whole lockdown and inflexibility ended with them getting their asses kicked by the NCR. Not just that but hiding in a bunker to "Wait for the NCR" out isn't gonna work because either one of the factions WILL find you and WILL destroy/enslave you or they succeed it but by the time the Brotherhood its safe to leave everyone has extra chromosomes and is named cletus. Lyons kinda realized that on his exodus and said "fuck THAT" and also probably grew a heart. I mean they were still somewhat Xenophobic since they shot at ghouls and could be dickish but I respect Lyon's brotherhood way more than the West Coast and the New Maxson. Maybe it's my bias since Fallout 3 was my introduction to the series, but I just felt like it was a more reasonable choice. As for the west coast, I can somewhat agree with them on a basic level: tech in the wrong hands could be problematic with the best example being the Fiends in NV using laser and plasma weaponry and the Van graff using their weapons to kill their competition. So for some dudes to confiscate that shit so that no drug-addicted bandits or assholes gets their hands on it makes sense. The problem is when you become so self-centered and have a stick so far up your ass that you hoard it and aren't even willing to share it with those that could actually need it. Like I hate House, and I refuse to destroy the Brotherhood in NV but he is 100% right about what he says about them. As for 76; Yeah they should have never made it there. The Enclave being in Appaalicha makes sense because the idea that the ENTIRE US government had hidden on ONE platform seems silly compared of them having had several bases all across the country. They could have made a faction similar to the brotherhood which was made up of ex-army/enclave soldiers who kinda found out about the whole "kill the unpure population" thing and were like "fuck that" and became something similar to Bethesda's brotherhood, without having to break the lore. Hell, call them "The Rangers" and make them the 'descendants" of fallout 3's "Riley's Rangers" faction that way you have some continuity and it's original! Anyway I'm rambling again. Gonna go play DUSK now and shoot eldritch abominations

@@PelinalWhitestrake36 It's really frustrating because they'll come up with interesting factions in each game like Reily's Rangers and Talon Company in 3, Gunners in 4 and The Responders in 76 but instead of focusing and fleshing them out more they just become a footnote to whatever faction hundreds of miles away managed to scrounge up enough resources and manpower to come to another part of the country somehow. At least it makes sense with the Enclave since they're the remains of the US Government so it is possible they're set up across most of the country. The East Coast BoS is complicating things a bit more but they could've required enough tech at least to make the trek nearly 200 years later. But how can Beth expect everyone to believe that around 20 or so years after The Great War they manage to become big enough to even set up in Appalachia?

Example 2: Heavily irradiated people out in the world can turn into ghouls. Example 3: Other mutations can occur that turn such people dangerous. Example 4: The vast majority of people in the wasteland are raider savages. Example 5: The highest ranking human leader of the Enclave in FO3 was against the plan of President Eden a computer gone rogue. If Colonel Autumn had succeeded in taking back control he likely would have had the FEV researched more extensively so that the scope of its culling would be reduced. I'm sure President Eden went berserk at some point since the old recordings from Enclave Radio clearly demonstrate an attempt by the Enclave to gain sympathy from the wastelanders through propaganda. If not and its plan was always to exterminate them then there would be no reason to send those transmissions.

They could really "Tranquility Lane" their way out of 76. All they would have to do is make Vault 76 similar to Vault 112. Everything that happened in FO76 could just be passed off as a simulation that the residents of the vault were part of. There are a few wrinkles that would need to be ironed out with this, but would save canon while not invalidating FO76.

NV more so than Miami, but that's because I know for sure NV will be good, considering I've already played it. Look man, I don't know if Cascadia, Miami, or whatever other project is being peddled by fans as the Bethesda slayer will be any good, because I've seen this before, with both Outer Worlds and New California. Both were considered to be these grand spins on Fallout that would blow everything Bethesda out the water and bring upon us illiterates the second coming of Isaac Asimov. Both of which failed to meet expectations and later died a week after their release due to being crude reconfigurations of New Vegas' iteration of the Fallout formula. This chapter feels small, and it feels like the paladins actions are covering her own mistakes, and knight shins unable to be empathised with because of how diluted and buried in his views he is, to the point of saying things like trading with the locals is pointless, and establishing trade and a healthy supply of resources to allow the brotherhood to operate easier and more efficiently as unimportant. I loved how in this update, even the new npcs are questioning why nukes are being dropped so often and where all these super mutants keep coming from. Also, I was very disappointed with how they introduced all these people and named npcs, updated all these places, but like you only talk to them like once or twice and that's about it. Those four people you ask some questions to at the start, three of whom have like actual legitimate concerns, they disappear after the quest is done; there's no like follow-up side-quests or something, they might as well be dead. And those last two parts apply to about every other new npc and even location that you meet and find while questing; the new Crater and Foundation rooms serve no other function as of yet and are too out of the way that I feel like they'd be remembered (there's not even like a clear path to the Crater War Room, it's just like walk up this out-of-the-way hill outside of town to this supposedly important area), there are no new daily quests or events, Treehouse Town doesn't have any merchants or any real reason to go there, there's more people and npcs but for some reason it just feels emptier. Also, I just hate how the actual weapon blueprints are daily-ops rewards but the modifications are bought with gold bullion; like I don't do daily-ops that often (if it's something easy I can do by myself and it's a daily reward thing, then maybe I'll do it), I don't have friends, and I'm capped out on gold (I have everything I wanted and I'm not interested in energy weapons or power armor so that cuts like two thirds of the gold bullion stuff); I also just don't like how Regs is the default gold bullion trader for the new stuff, they could've just slapped a random robot or npc at Fort Atlas and made him the bullion merchant; they even could've made the boy-scout out front the merchant. They could've just made the Brotherhood an actual faction with reputation, daily quests, and rank-rewards like with Crater and Foundation, but I guess they wanted to take the easy way here; but I suppose this could be patched in and reputation and such retroactively adjusted. This went on longer than I thought, but I did have fun with this update for the most part, I liked Ramani more than I thought I would, I generally like most of the new npcs and it was fun talking with them, I don't know if I hated the quest at Kerwood Mine more or Shin more, and I hope they do more campaign events (like the whole resource gathering thing we did a couple months back) and updates like this for other factions (going in order of which ones I think would make sense to do first: Responders at Morgantown Airport or that airport workshop, Free States at Berkley because after all their merchant is there at the train station, Enclave in the rest of the Whitesprings that's like blocked off, Blue Ridge Caravan at that sealed off building on the west end or something, and maybe Vault 76 and the Overseer at Sutton because the Overseer did say she wanted to rebuild Sutton first) but do more with it (make the factions like actual factions with reputation, daily quests, merchants, faction rewards, etc.).

It's not like we want to hate certain Media, we just dislike it or just certain parts of it. To hate something is not a Crime or Sin. People are free to disagree with Criticism. But stop calling people haters. And Second Thing just because Bethesda owns the ip it fucking doesn't mean that they should do what ever they want with it. Not really, the Brotherhood lead by Elder Lyons, stayed true to the word of the Brotherhood by controlling the purifiers, which in the wrong hands, like the Enclave, could harm humanity. Which is what their main mission, to take control of technology which could harm humanity, so the mistakes of the past aren't repeated. I think it was actually smart of Lyons to take on the kids from the Pitt, so they could have future members of the faction, to gain manpower. Like most things in the world, reform of a faction could improve and make you stronger as a people, so that's what Lyons did. Just look at Lyons Brotherhood vs. The Mojave Brotherhood, Lyons is in a better position than the Mojave Chapter, in fact they are actually surviving and thriving, the Mojave Chapter almost on the verge of extinction. Lyons changed when it was needed most. The Midwest Chapter is more successful than the Mojave Chapter because they changed, even the Brotherhood in the Commonwealth is more successful. So is upholding some outdated traditions, views, and values worth over the survival of your faction and or people? I think not.

The Appalachian chapter and Steel Dawn actually makes more sense than you give it credit for, as its established in Fo76 lore that the founder of the Appalachian chapter was a close friend of Maxson from his military days. So when he hears from her miraculously he lets her into the brotherhood family, and when she tells him of this horrible plague and winged beasts, only to go silent, he’d of course send a few people to check on his friend and the dire situation she told him about. It’s still kind of flimsy, but not as random or contrived as you said.

They did not care for the established lore in fallout 3 (Though at least then they kind of tried and at least tried to keep the west and east coast lores seperate) and game by game they give even less of a shit about anything previously established. Look at their own franchise - the elder scrolls. They had to invent some shit about parallel universes or something to keep their own lore and retcons somewhat consistent.

Maybe Roger was so tied to staying locked down because of the high radiation outside, and John continued the xenophobia because that’s what his dad did. Roger wanted to keep technology safe for future generations, but after he died that got bastardized into keep technology away from everyone.
