Loads of family shows are exactly like this, lower middle class families, far from perfect, because that's what's relatable and entertaining. If you think they're all about wealthy fathers with perfect families, that's more about what you choose to watch. Both back then and in recent times. There in fact seem to be even more like that in recent times, but I may have just forgotten many from the 80s/90s. The one that stands out the most to me from back then is Roseanne.

I preferred the early years of the show. The family was still highly dysfunctional, yet relatable. As time went on, they just became over the top caricatures of themselves. It happens to most sitcoms, unfortunately. They start running out of ideas, so they go for cheap, broad comedy.

The first season had them portrayed as a normal loving family. Peg was a housewife that actually cooked and Al the supporter and the children Kelly andBud actually got along. But seems like the producer took a different approach after the first season and didn’t want another regular American family sitcom and wanted more controversy and humor

The concept of Married With Children was much different in the first season. It's much less of a caricature. Kelly's not that dumb and entire family is much more... normal. But I like the following seasons much better, the golden era of Married With Children is after Season 1, but before Sony. These last seasons when Sony came in, are too theatrical, I don't like that gimmick with dummies falling from the roof and I also don't enjoy the NO MA'AM episodes. Acting becomes different too, they're trying to please the audience too much. But damn, these middle seasons are gold.

He could have bought a home in a cheap hood. Or inherited money. Or obtained a hud house through short sale. No every state is unreasonable like California, NY, or New Jursey.

@@charles1203 in the later seasons explains that Al bought the house dirt cheap because it was condemned. He also refinanced his mortgage to a very low rate by tricking Steve (which cost him his position). Every so often the family comes into a little money or wins something that helps them out. The money usually disappears very quickly but it’s not unreasonable to think they paid a few bills first. There’s rarely any food in the house. There is very little living expenses (like buying clothes, auto maintenance, ect). The kids got an allowance at first but that stopped and they had to find their own way of getting money and the things they need/want. Al only pays bills that are marked “final notice”. They also mooch, steal and squeeze every opportunity to get stuff for free. Al works for minimum wage but gets commission. Malls were stupid popular in the late 80s. He probably had a lot of customers (we just get to see the funny incidents). Would it work in real life? Probably not, especially today. The value of the dollar is worse, there is far less stuff for free (because the economy isn’t nearly as good as it was before the crash of 89), malls are ghost towns, and housing and other general expenses are far higher.
