Hayden Paul, from the Stick of Joseph, and his wife Savannah discuss gender roles, how our culture targets the family, and how they have been affected by these "philosophies of men" in their lives.
How does the Family Proclamation stand up against our current culture?

Since converting in 2021, my politics have shifted dramatically. Living the Gospel has opened my eyes to the overwhelming perversion of truths we deal with in the world. I feel like "empathy" is being used as a weapon these days. If you don't show the correct levels of tolerance and acceptance (both words which meanings have been stretched and twisted) then you are cast out as an evil pariah. I was led to believe that promiscuity was power. I was led to believe that posioning yourself with drugs and alcohol was normal. That you are not normal if you don't partake... Becoming a mother and wife, and truly leaning into my femininity saved my life. And Jesus Christ, of course!

Hallelujah. I have been saying the same exact things because I am very very pro women and their femininity and very very pro men and their masculinity and those are very clouded. I get rejected all the time for saying in essence the same largely i suppose because i am a man and its labeled as toxic. Congratulations for being willing to see. And for fighting for femininity…..a massive superpower that feminist attack

Things have changed. When I was an LDS kid growing up in the East coast of the US, trying to live the gospel, the mockery from the great and spacious building was "goody two shoes" (which I was a little proud of 🙂). And my friends, 95% were not LDS but were religious, were all respectful and even protective of my beliefs. Nowadays, still just trying to live the gospel, I hear people like me being called judgemental, intolerant, unkind, and even not knowing or understanding how God loves His children. So, I usually try to stay under the radar. But now my husband and I are on a mission and wear His name proudly on our chest. We may not be perfect, but we do do know how much God loves all His children, because we feel it EVERY SINGLE DAY!

Being a mom of 5 kids and being home available to them always and not working outside of the home focusing on making money but allowing my husband to fulfill that role has created a balanace in our home that I know is inspired by God. My choice to be home and have 5 kids isnt considered normal now. People are surprised when they learn this about me. Our society would be better off under that dynamic that God has towards building and raising families with balance. Our choices brought the consequences that has given me a confirmation of God's plan for families and that we have to figure that out keeping in mind everyone has different circumstances. I know our circumstances can change, that's why I value education that I pursued and graduated from B.Y.U. 24 years ago but I admit my favorite degree that I feel I've earned is a P.H.D in M.O.M. 😊

I just have to comment on how refreshing this podcast has been. The goal of my life was to be a wife and mother and I struggled. My children are raised and now as a grandmother I am in awe of what my grandchildren who some are the ages of this couple are up against as parents. So many great points were made. A firm foundation is the key. Hayden, thank you for your honestly about your struggle. It is real and so great you see it for what it is. Having had my own things over the years I have battled with, I know having a safe and supportive place to share makes all the difference. I worry about the trends of the world and how our children are going to face them. I believe we are blessed with a very strong generation coming up because their battles are real and you as parents will be very creative in your approach to teaching and the children will benefit as they stay strong. Their relationship with the Savior will be their anchor. You as parents are their first examples of Him. I am so encouraged by listening to you. Savannah, we women do need each other to face these challenges. We save a lot of money because we are each other's therapy sessions as we share our struggles. I love what you both said about supporting your roles as a man and a woman. Years ago I remember a girlfriend of mine and I sharing some time together as moms. Neither of us worked and she said to me, "Debbie, you know it won't be long and there will be a time coming when couples will be convinced that it takes two incomes to support a family." It happened and daycares grew and parents divorced at high rates. We all know the rest of the story. Bravo and bless you for standing strong and not adopting the "gray" in your marriage. Stay strong and let's do this again. Thank you Greg. I love listening in to both your podcasts. I can never get enough!

I moved from Utah last year in part because there were so many members of the church who affirm the LGBTQ++++ lifestyle. It was really bad in the ward I moved from. The young women’s presidency in the ward would do gender neutral activities. They were not teaching the importance of womanhood to those young women. My wife went to the bishop several times expressing her frustrations. It’s unfortunate, but the church is not in a good state in many wards in Utah.

Really bad in my ward too. My heart breaks. I feel like the massive difference in what the world teaches and what the gospel teaches causes me so much cognitive dissonance when worldly things are entering our sacred spaces. Even our ward buildings were sacred before but now there are things said inside that go so far outside the gospel and we are having to be “nice” about.

- it depends on where you live in the church. In our country, there is no issue with the alphabet soup issue. We live in a country where niceness culture does not survive. Tell it how it is, is how we live. But to answer your question - no church culture most definitely does not match the gospel. Esp utah where there is niceness culture layered over the older perfection culture. I and my family would still thrive and just upset people in Utah if we lived there, but so many people have no back bone and don't want to rock the boat.

My sister moved from Utah to Georgia and she told me it was bad in her Ward in Sandy, UT. She felt her pre-teen needed a change to not be a part of that culture at church, and it was happening even at Activity Days night. It bothered her at the promoting these lifestyles and identities being infiltrated at church and the virtue signaling if you didn't step in line. The pandemic was bad. Maybe Georgia will eventually have this issue or get worse but she has said it's been a relief that its not.

To Greg's question about Utah not being able to withstand adversity. Living in CA during Prop 8, we were asked by the Church to donate, hold signs, make phone calls, send letters, etc. And many of us did, and we lost jobs, friends, etc. Our church buildings and temples were vandalized, etc. We sacrificed a lot to stand for the family. Not much later, we saw many (not all) Utah members of the church participating in Pride parades, etc. I realized they never would have survived doing what we did in CA.

I am retired and do family history all day, except for when I’m at the temple. Our answers Thursday did half eight 1012 children, but there was a lot of heartache because they would have a child and then three years later two years later at birth the child would die. If they could get that child passed the age of eight years old they pretty much had made then they would live to be 87 to 90 years old. But boy getting them out and getting them to the age of eight was really tough to keep them alive.

This is a topic that I have been following for a while. There are a number of Non-LDS voices that are saying interesting and important things A recent documentary 'Birth Gap' has brought out how many women who wanted children didn't have them because they waited too long to start looking for the relationship they would need to have to start a family.

Unfortunately, I haven't heard even one lesson focusing on the Family Proclamation in ward meetings in over 15 years.

I was taught in government schools and raised in a gospel centered home by my parents who were both return missionaries and converts. Sadly, there was still too much worldly influence that filtered in through school. My wife and I were led to home school with our first of four children when my wife lost her job. We made the sacrifices including me working a 2nd and 3rd job to provide. Today we have been blessed for that decision and our children are taught the gospel with less of the world in their lives. The Proclamation teaches parents are primarly responsible to rear, care and teach their children. “Be not conformed to this world” (Romans 12:2), “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God” (1 Corinthians 3:19). “Beware, lest any man spoil you … after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ” (Colossians 2:8).

Greg, You just asked your guests if they are being taught about “exaltation.” My response is: If they are attending the temple regularly, and receiving the endowment instruction there; then, YES!!!, they-and the rest of us (doing likewise)-are being taught the centrality of Exaltation in The Great Plan of Happiness, and in the Doctrine of Christ! I’m sure this couple IS doing that. May we all DO what our prophet is inviting us to do-as often as our circumstances permit.

I have always believed that mothers needed to be home with their children. I have not always been a model Mom, but I did know there were certain things and precepts that my children needed to know. (I converted to the church midlife, and even then many things were made clearer to me.) I thank my Heavenly Father that my children keep the commandments, raise their children with wholesome values (amazingly) even though I was not perfect, I think the difference was made for my children BECAUSE I converted to the RESTORED Gospel. (together with my being there for them in the home while they were growing up). They are not active members, but with faith I think they will come around when the truth becomes apparent to them, however they do abstain from drugs and alcohol, pray in the home with the family, go to their church...conservative in politics and viewpoints.

The House of the Lord in Bountiful, which is part of every endowment instruction presentation, has a golden symbol of yin and yang in each endowment room towards the top of each pillar.
@Jeanie-nv7lo
@Jeanie-nv7lo 14 дней назад
I'll have to take your word for it that it is yinyang symbol. If so, that symbol in the temple would mean something better than what the world portraits it as. Just like the different pointed stars and the rainbow that used to be Christian symbols before sat-an-ists stole it. Yinyang in the world is connected to yoga which if studied enough turns people away from the gospel because it is demonic and pagan. So there must be a pure version with eternal symbolism for it being in the temple. Or, it isn't a yinyang you see, but something similar.

You are right. It's definitely similar enough to look like the Yin Yang, but unique enough to be it's own new holy symbol, plus gold leafed.

@budgillett 14 дней назад
Yes and it's not so obvious when you do recognize it it very much has the same shape and it seems like a yin and yang symbol but clearly it isn't it's towards the top of the pillars or the pillar designs
@budgillett
@budgillett 14 дней назад
My original statement to you about where the symbol is was incorrect. I just went to an endowment session in the Bountiful Temple and saw that the yin Yang like symbol wasn't at the top of the wall pillars, but instead in multiple spots, towards the middle of each horizontal wall pillar connecting the vertical pillars. Also, while the shape is outlined in gold, there is no black and white sides but instead each side is the same color, a dull gold fill. Also, unlike the "vertical" orientation of the yin Yang, this symbol is horizontal like in orientation. Hopefully my descriptions make sense so you can know what to look for.

I love to think of exaltation as what am I becoming? Am I modeling my Savior, my Heavenly Parents, am I striving to become like Them? If we think of “meriting” Christ’s grace, the only thing we can do is come follow Him. And we follow Him into exaltation. It’s all about becoming! What a lovely young couple who already realize what becoming means.

Greg, my understanding is very limited but I have always equated exaltation to "eternal progression". Elder Bruce R. McConkie taught this principle at a stake conference many years ago. Paraphrasing here, but in essence he said that what ever direction we are going at the time we leave this life is the direction you will continue in the eternal realm. If you are 'striving' to progress and repent, you will continue to progress and change throughout eternity. But if you are not striving to progress and repent then your progression will be stopped (damned). What he taught that night has helped me keep focused on the striving to progress and trusting in the atonement rather than having to be "perfect" at everything I do.

If women don't want 'that' they need to recognise that their desires don't align with God and repent. Repentance for this type of woman would include decontructing (to use the com-muni-st ant church word) their sat-an-ic indoctrination in the education system before they can rebuild their education on the sure foundation of the gospel. Or... don't repent and receive the reward they measure up for. But God's law is correct and women should choose to want 'that' if they want eternal life. I’m now married to a non believer that fills that masculine role perfectly, but without God. The ideal is we all have both, but I have found that if I have to choose between a man that believes in ideologies and won’t protect his home and family from falsehood, and a man that doesn’t believe in ideologies and WILL defend his home and family from dangerous ideology, it is safer with the latter. Supporting the gender woo is allowing your family to bow to the false gods of our day and so destructive to our kids and families. Strong believing men that will stand up to it are so rare around me. Such a profound statement: Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll was never presented as virtusous.. The new sins of "gender fluidity" and "girl power" ("corporte woman" vs "stay at home mom") are all promoted as virtuous and truth.

Since we are eternal being and everlasting it will be unfair and selfish if we don't give life to others so that they can also experience joy of coming to existence just the way we were offering from our heavenly parents develop into the nature of their spirit, image and likeness and endowed with power to know then our agency came to pass because of the Devin power was transferred to us from our premortal spirit development and birth .the same way our body develop in the womb the same way our spirit developed in the womb of our heavenly mother.God will never give us any thing or practice that has never existed he reveal to us things how they are.mortal life is primary school were we learn the basic this life it has all the questions and answers of eternity.and who heavenly father is.

33:40 is why we don’t teach exaltation because we don’t want to risk offending people on the margins? We done want to make single parents or single individuals feel excluded or people in the non ideal family excluded. We are so fearful as a society if excluding people that we would rather teach the rest bear version of the gospel than risk someone leaving the church or disagree with us

Good episode - was very thought provoking. Sounds like this couple has it all figured out. Would be interesting to hear from them again. in 30 years When their kids are all grown up. God can help us but remember that your children have agency and the fact that you think you have it all figured out probably means that you don't.

I love the yin and yang symbol as well, the divine feminine keys to mortality held by Eve the mother of all living and the masculine keys to immortality held by our Savior Jesus Christ are perfectly embodied in it. To me it also depicts the fruit of both trees in the garden of Eden and the hands holding each piece of fruit that draws souls through the veil into mortality and immortality in one great eternal round. ❤

It can also be argued that our extravagant lifestyles, vanity, wealth and pride are so out of balance in the church with mostly white members, men are being pressured to engage in mostly non-meaningful work or provide increasingly meaningless things for the family. Men are exhausted and quitting. We can't afford to have families with the "standard of living" the Mormon culture is pressuring Mormons to have. The church requires more and more time away from the family while also saying a "good Mormon family" has a comfy job, 2 semi comfy cars, comfy nice clothes, comfy furnishings, comfy TV's, a plethora of comfy shoes, comfy carpet, comfy kitchen, comfy processed food full of chemicals, comfy 401K, comfy medical insurance, comfy car insurance, comfy dental insurance, comfy PTO. We are white washed tombs in the church. I don't care what anyone says. We care way more about how we appear than being honest and saying what's on our hearts. This culture of capitalism and consumerism is killing families. Our priorities are completely off. The church is not living like the Book of Mormon commands at all. We are Condemned. Look up the definition of that word. D&C declares this church under condemnation and it has not been rescinded.

17:29 Are you claiming toxic masculinity is not real or not a concern? How would you describe someone like Andrew Tate? Toxic masculinity involves harmful behaviors and attitudes such as suppressing emotions (except anger), aggressive dominance, devaluation of women, homophobia, unnecessary risk-taking, and rejecting vulnerability. These behaviors often lead to mental health issues, relationship problems, and the perpetuation of gender inequality. Healthy masculinity combines traditional masculine traits like strength and resilience with emotional awareness, respect, and empathy. It encourages men to express a full range of emotions, view vulnerability as a strength, treat everyone with equality, and build supportive relationships. This balanced approach promotes better mental health, healthier relationships, and a more equitable society, showing that masculinity includes being emotionally intelligent, respectful, and caring.

I’m skeptical, Is there some ancient tribe or society where these attributes you define were practiced. What examples can you cite that support your position?
@Jeanie-nv7lo
@Jeanie-nv7lo 14 дней назад
Nope. Im a woman and I understand that Men don't need to show their emotional vulnerability in public if they choose not to. They are the protectors of the family and of society. Strong men who have the ability to physically stand up for women and the family are the only thing standing in the way of narcissistic men who want to enslave humankind. It is these narcissistic com-mun-istic, social-istic, sat-an-ic men who have created this doctrine of "male vulnerability is a virtue"... also in the same vein "sharing mental vulnerability everyday on social media is a virtue" and "coming out of the closet and men dressing as women and having sex changes is so strong and morally superior to everyone else". Men should feel free to express themselves and their vulnerabilities in the confines of the healthy marriage relationship they have created because they are strong God fearing men . If my husband followed the doctrine that he needs to share his feelings all the time - he would have stayed a grunt worker earning nothing because all the narcissists would walk all over him at work. So no... men - you be strong men - we need you that way. And create your safe space in your home to be vulnerable. And if you don't have a marriage yet, find a wife and speak with your father and mother or someone your trust in the meantime. And the same for women - you be loyal loving women and only share your vulnerabilities with your husband - not with your mother and girlfriends. That is the recipe for strong marriages and therefore for a strong society.

We need to emphasize having children even more. I’m a southerner and none of my Protestant friends have kids and I’m 30. It’s insanity. After 35 a woman’s chances of having a severe birth defect for her child rapidly increases.

@@dcarts5616 why procreative marriage only? I know many married couples that chose not to have children. As far as polygamy, some family members (children of wife #1) never warmed up to wife #2. In fact it divided the family. My wife was neutral. This is in a small town in Utah. My point is the definition of family is different and I endorse whichever path is chosen.
