As someone who has autism, but also have an autistic brother, I’ve seen parts of this film and I do agree that this depiction can be seen as harmful and I’m glad you guys talked about it (also I loved hearing Rachel’s opinion) and you guys did a great job explaining the topic!

the security officer is just “magical helpful old black man” trope we commonly see in film. only it’s usually done slightly more tastefully. here he literally shows up exactly when the plot demands and only says exactly what needs to be said before leaving the movie for good.

imho in the case of movies like split - id absolutely say specifying the disorder is much more dangerous than just saying "ok, this character is ambiguously crazy" (though, typically this refers to psychotic/schizophrenia spectrum disorders) but speaking as someone with DID that particular movie + other movies that namedrop DID/"MPD" have negatively impacted my life in terms of peoples perception of my disorder and likely my diagnostic process as well. so there's my two cents on that
@darrinstevens7063

Curious if you caught the series Many Sides of Jane. If so do you feel this brings a thoughtful & accurate example of DID? Would love to hear someone's opinion with a personal impact of the disorder. Hope you have a good day.

Most people on the spectrum only become violent towards themselves when they have meltdowns due to being unable to process and communicate their emotions, and the only time someone on spectrum would really be violent towards another person is if they were having a meltdown and someone got in their space when they didn’t want them to, and they might push them away or hit them. In general though, violence is more common in children because it’s even harder for them to communicate compared to what those on the spectrum learn as they grow up. (This comes from someone with asd who would bang her head into the wall and, sometime still, punches herself while having meltdowns but has never been violent towards another person)

As a female with ASD it was hard to be diagnosed because of the stereotypical way Autism is portrayed since it's predominatly male orientated & females mostly present completely differently. This is weird timing since I've just met my 9 year old cousin for the first time & She's Autistic as well & I could see a lot of me in her

As someone on the autism spectrum, I was definitely caught in the middle between "this movie is fucking hilarious" and "this movie sucks" - it's definitely frustrating to see these sort of depictions in media, especially knowing that a lot of people tend to view these stereotypes as truth. What a great podcast! I love listening to the two of you. You're entertaining, thoughtful and insightful. As to your inquiry about whether it's better to depict someone is generally crazy or with a particular mental condition, I believe if you're going to portray the condition you have to do it accurately or else you risk creating a misconception that harmfully and unjustly labels people living with such a condition in a negative light. Keep up the great work!

Not sure if yuh guys will see this but I saw Chelsea's twitter feed and figured I'd give some praise where I felt some was due. Your guys podcast is quite honestly my favorite part of the channel. I've always loved horror but all the research done for these episodes has made me feel so much more knowledgable about films in general and I notice things that I never noticed before in new movies and films that I've already seen. I mean I do love that you guys do a mix between serious and then just being goofy but what I love most is coming out of the podcast with all this new knowledge on the horror genre as a whole. Its because of this channel that I learned of Carol glovers novel which I went and bought a copy of and in my last year of school used and cited for many of my schools newspaper articles for the entertainment column. This channel has also helped me learn that film is something that I thoroughly enjoy and would love to go into myself. So those who are being over dramatic and saying this that and the other about the podcast I dont feel understand the actual work and thought that's put into it. They're not just flimsy reviews. Their thorough critiques which I love because I've never heard you guys be completely negative in a film even in the ones you hate I've heard you find some good in which I feel many do not do. Anyways though, I hope people on the internet start to change their perspective on your guys podcast and I can't wait for the next episode!

17:15 It's a very important distinction to be made. As an easy example, I watch all ya'lls videos as they come out, I rewatch episodes of the kill count and podcast all the time, and if I was able to get ya'lls signatures, it would mean as much to be as the broadway performer signatures I have on my playbills. But that's just like. Appreciation for what you guys do, and your talent. Same thing for horror in general, I'm fixated and keep coming back because I appreciate what its doing, but the idea of these sorts of things happening in real life would obviously horrify me, because those are real people getting hurt, not dummies and life casts. The sort of obsession that makes one do things that would hurt others, as long as they know that would hurt others, is different, I think.

Fun fact, we did a show with Wes Borland's group at a show in KC, and he was a class-act and super cool to the other bands, but once he got on stage he absolutely ripped it apart. Was, like....Bizkit + NIN, and was an awesome set. (Certainly didn't hurt that we covered "Terrible Lie" prior to it; he seemed to enjoy it.) Dude loses his mind when it comes to performing, but in the GOOD way. Like, "leave it all on the table so people walk away amazed at what they just heard", with a bit of theatrics. (He wasn't full-blown makeup at the time, but he definitely fed into the crowd, and vice versa.)

Hey James, I was wondering if you could do a KILL COUNT of *I Still Know What You Did Last Summer* with Jennifer Love Hewitt?

Im on the spectrum, from what I've seen in this film, it portrays a very face value depiction of autism rather than actually exploring it in a sensible way

Everytime I try to watch a clip from this film, I just feel so uncomfortable. On one hand, I have met people with low-functioning autism where this type of behavior is not unheard of, but on the other hand, as a person who is on the spectrum, I am totally disgusted by this stereotypical performance. This is the role Tropic Thunder made fun of with Simple Jack. In summary, It ticks me off, and I don't like it.

She did say "Danny" in that clip, not "Tanner," although I can see how it could have been misheard.

John Travolta doing a Mr Blonde reference is actually a reference to the fact that his character in Pulp Fiction is the brother of Vic Vega from Reservoir Digs

"I want to play faith at our wedding" "FUCK YEAH" I love you guys. Also Limp Bizkit was so solid for 3 years, RIP lol P.s. As a father of two autistic children I appreciate the amount of care that you two put into discussing this, as opposed to just jumping into it and laughing at the perceived "stereotypical" autistic person. It is rather unfortunate that Hollywood cares more about portraying gender/sexuality accurately, but just doesn't seem to care about accurately portraying those mental and social disorders. Love you guys keep it up.

Preface - I have not seen this movie, however, I have been diagnosed with autism, and I do not think I could watch it without being extremely offended by Travolta's portrayal of someone with ASD. The problem I find with Hollywood's depictions of ASD is that they treat it like an illness (incidentally, please don't refer to ASD traits as symptoms, again it implies illness) it's not, our brains' are just wired differently, so they just work differently! ASD is something that you can't just throw into a movie as a catch-all explanation for a character's behaviour; if they're going to have a real world diagnosis there should be an accurate portrayal to back it up. Sorry for the rant, I'm not wanting to have a go at James and Chelsea, I adore the podcast, it's really helping me through the lock down because my routine is so thrown out. Keep up the fantastic work :)

43:17 My theory as to the kid’s name is that Hunter’s ex-wife said Tanny. Tanny MIGHT be a nickname for Tanner but that raises the question of why. EDIT: I checked names.org (one of my favourite sites) and only 187 people in the US since 1880 have had the legal name Tanny. I checked here because there’ll always be people who give their kids nicknames for actual names, just ask my aunt Tilly. So I scrolled down to Related Names to see if Tanner shows up. Nada. Tannny shows up, people have named their kids Tannny but never call Tanners Tanny. I even checked out Tanner’s Related Names and nothing. www.names.org/n/tanny/about www.names.org/n/tanner/about
