You are welcome to join me for another fascinating online tour, this time exploring the fantastical, surreal, religious paintings of the Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch (lived 1450 - 1516).
Hieronymus Bosch was a Dutch painter from Brabant. He is one of the most notable representatives of the Early Netherlandish painting school. His work, generally oil on oak wood, mainly contains fantastic illustrations of religious concepts and narratives.
Within his lifetime his work was collected in the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain, and widely copied, especially his macabre and nightmarish depictions of hell.
We'll be exploring the little-known facts about his life, character and his times, taking a close examination and discussion of his incredible paintings, and their influence in the history of art.

I've learned more from watching Edward Calcutt over four days than I had in four years of university! Keep 'em coming!

I've been reading Michael Connelly's books whose main character is Hieronymous Bosch. He brings the original Bosch into the 20-21st century as detective Harry Bosch in which he captures the original as a 21st century character. We too live in a very strange time ...

Crossing the boundaries which separate one's own academic discipline from other "departments" can result in, quite innocent, faux-pas. I find this is especially the case when Historians stray in to the land of the Theologian. Edward, the Immaculate Conception and The Virgin Birth are two entirely separate doctrines and had an approximate time-event-span of 9 months between them. Google it ..... the doctrine is quite interesting, especially the bit about John the Baptist being only one of three people ever born without original sin. Even most Catholics don't know this. Anyway, loved your work on Bosch .... refreshingly laid-back in its presentation, professionally put together, entertaining and informative. May you continue to risk the wrath of pedants :-)

I've heard it theorized that he suffered from ergot poisoning (and therefore psychedelic trips) from mouldy bread, or something.

Please read up a little on Dutch history. Brabant is not "a region in Holland". Also, Den Bosch was very much part of the Spanish Netherlands (being below the big rivers) whereas your bit about the renaissance in Northern Europe is more about the Netherlands north of the rivers. (Rhine and Meuse)
