One thing not covered in this video is the impact this had on the Farrell family. They were so heartbroken by the deaths that they shut down all 4 locations, and walked away from the ice cream business. I had been to a different location as a child before the accident. Farrells was more than just ice cream. They had a player piano in each location, and a candy store that made Willy Wonka jealous. It was truly fantastic.

I attended the NTSB hearings on this crash. Some facts… a flight instructor who had military F86 flight time had been “assigned” to get Bingham up-to-speed in the F86. This was done hurriedly and woefully inadequately. The instructor made some comments that are on record. First, he said the F86 is not an airplane in the strictest sense of the word. What was it? “A high performance gun platform.” When asked on record if he felt Bingham was qualified to fly the F86 he stated: “if I had had anything to say about it I wouldn’t have let that man within a hundred yards of that aircraft.” I heard this first hand; I was twenty feet away. Bingham was a hotdog flier; he was later killed in an accident carelessly flying into a mountain. Incidentally, don’t discount the sprinkler system. It put the fire out effectively saving many lives. Most of those killed were the result of the impact of the jet into the building, not the fire. I was on the scene minutes after the crash. All of this is in the NTSB final report. Instead of a lot of moronic conjecture about this and that it’d be nice if people would get some facts before they babble in comments.

@@pfsantos007. So… just do in internet search for “Richard Bingham” and you will find more information than you probably want. ‘happy researching!

Well, it was a LONG time ago. Because I happened to come across the accident scene maybe thirty minutes after it happened, and because even then I had extensive flying experience, and because I inadvertently found out about the hearing (being held in a South Sacramento Holiday Inn) I attended the hearings. Okay, maybe nothing better to do… and curiosity. Enough there. The pilot was a rich glory boy, okay. As to how/when he met his later demise… when it happened the Farrell’s thing was still pretty fresh in everyone’s mind so it hit the news pretty good. All I can spotily remember is he was hot dogging somewhere north of San Francisco in the Coast Range Mountains and flew a P-51 Mustang into a mountain. ‘just guessing. Whatever happened was not done intentionally. I might research this; there surely is documentation on the internet. On-the-other-hand… who cares?

I remember that day. I was suppose to meet my Cousin there for her B-day We got stuck in traffic on 99 south. We got about 2 blocks away when it hit. My cousin and her family were nearest the back counter when the plane hit (from her account) but her family got out with only minor injuries other than the smoke and heat. They didn't breath to good after that due to the jet fuel. We didn't know it was Farrells until we got closer. By then we couldn't even get close enough to find out if they were ok. That took almost a week to find out. They didn't release any info pending all the bodies and well everything. That was a horrifying day for everyone ..

I grew up in Sacramento a couple miles away when this occurred. The Farrell’s closed down, and that shopping center had a lot of vacancies afterwards. 2:05 He calls it a high powered Sabre.......but actually it is relatively under powered as fighter aircraft go. When you read about the accident investigation they say that for the F-86 when you first lift off the runway you have to climb at a shallow angle in order to gain airspeed. This pilot had flown the aircraft many times before but for some reason on this flight he tried to climb at too steep of an angle......and the aircraft could not gain airspeed. How do you explain something like that? 2,000 hours as a pilot and yet he forgot one of the basics....airspeed management.

He knew the runway was much shorter than he was used to, and in his effort to take off as soon as possible he did what was actually the worst possible thing to do. I can't even begin to imagine what that child (now adult) had to live with! But speaking of living with things, I hope that pilot lived (or lives) every single day with what he caused, and the lives he shattered. No court in the land could hand down a better punishment than him having to live with this. Shame on him for flying with so little experience in that aircraft, and on the instructor who just "assumed" the pilot would get more training.

I remember going to Farrell's in Fresno when I was a kid in the 70s. They used to have a huge bowl of ice cream called the ZOO, I can still remember people trying to eat that thing. Sorry to here such a tragic story to something that held great memories.

This particular F-86 model, MK5, was the hottest, most maneuverable F-86 variant of all due to wing modifications including removal of the slatted leading edge. This came at the cost of high landing speeds and poor low speed flying characteristics [which is why they were forced to land hot compared to other Sabers], also made them prone to stalling at AOA's that other models handled. The next and last model, MK6, put the leading edge slats back on, so this model was in essence a failed experiment [which was copied from the US F-86F, essentially the same aircraft]]. Of course, anyone piloting this aircraft would have and should have known this, this was the last plane that a guy with 4 hours cockpit time should have been taking off from on a short runway. Once his nose was past a certain angle, it was over. It stalled, and no chance to recover, no chance to abort. If he would have kept the nose down and went to full power, would have been dangerously low over the fence but he would not have stalled and likely would have cleared the building.

I just said the same thing. If he had the balls to know he would make it, he would have made it. It would have been a hair-cutter for sure but he would have successfully took off. He got cowardly due to inexperience and tried to gun it like his little LearJet.
@JesseJames-wj8ft
@JesseJames-wj8ft 5 месяцев назад
@@MrWolfSnack His drastic inexperience + short runway were the sole causes of this, it was no "accident". I might add that the modifications made on this jet made perfect sense for well trained combat pilots, where speed and maneuverability are top priorities, even at the expense of poor handling on takeoffs and landings. Any civilian operators should have been hyper aware of these limitations, if they were or not they sure didn't respect them - The actual owner of the jet was killed himself a few years later, stalled in a Mustang.

Don't believe for a second he felt a vibration. Dude was making shit up about an aircraft failure to keep some heat off himself
@MrWolfSnack

The vibration was the engine stalling out, he was pitching up too early because he was nervous about not making the runway.

2,000 hours of flight time and 4 hours in this plane? That's basically nothing. I have over 50,000 hours of experience playing video games, I would not ever consider myself a professional at any competitive game in 4 hours, and he chose to do something crazy high risk like this as a complete novice?

My oldest sister was there and left Farrell's about 15 minutes before the crash. If she would have stayed for one more soda, she could have died or been severely injured. Someone above was looking out for her that day. God rest all of the poor souls and innocent children who died that day. 🙏 💔

At the time, KSAC had three intersecting runways, and 12/30 was the shortest of the three. I can't imagine why they didn't use 20 for a jet departure, which is the normal default runway. That happened before my time, but the effects still linger. Today that shopping center is used for city and county offices.

Should look into an Air Force F-102 crash as part of opening day celebration of the Seattle World's Fair in 1962, where the engine had failed, the pilot attempted a ditch into Lk Washington near Lk Forest Park, ejected but the jet flew further and crashed into a Mountlake Terrace neighborhood destroying several homes and vehicles, killing an elderly couple. Another family(on vacation) got screwed by AF with only a week of temporary housing at Paine Field and no compensation for all their losses.

I hate how crash reports make a big deal about “low time” in the airplane. It’s such a lame excuse, and they use the “low time as an excuse. Every single pilot out there is going to have low time” comment regarding a new aircraft…they’re learning to fly it dumb ass! It doesn’t matter what type of plane it is, the first time you step into the cockpit you have 0 hours in that plane. Just because this guy had 4 hours in the plane doesn’t really mean anything. Everyone that’s ever flown that type of plane, at some point also had 4 hours in it. They need to focus on the fact that he had 2,000+ hours of flying experience and made a mistake. Not 4hrs and made a mistake. With 2,000+ hours, regardless of airplane type, he knew better then to try and take it back up in the air. At 2,000+ hrs, he had the knowledge of aborting being the smarter choice. 2,000 hours or 4 hours, it doesn’t matter. When we learned to fly, on lesson 1 or 2 we learn it’s ok to abort our take off if something doesn’t feel right.
