How much do you know about the military history of Scottish Highlanders? Did you know that there are more highland regimens in Canada than any other country, including Scotland? Have you heard of the famous Highland Charge, used on the battlefield against British troops with muskets?
www.warmuseum....
This video is proudly sponsored by the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, Ontario. The Canadian War Museum is Canada’s national museum of military history and one of the world’s most respected museums for the study and understanding of armed conflict.
The Highland Warriors exhibition gives fascinating insights into the culture and battlefield traditions of Scottish warriors and soldiers from the Middle Ages to the World Wars and modern times.
The museum is going to livestream about the Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11 at 11 am EST, which you'll be able to find here: / 2646731585372744

Hope you enjoyed this in-depth look at the exhibition and interview with Dr. McLeod. I don't normally ask anyone to share and comment, but in this case I do want to encourage you to help spread the video and give the Canadian War Museum the exposure that it deserves. Thanks, folks! The museum is going to livestream about the Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11 at 11 am EST, which you'll be able to find here: facebook.com/warmuseum/videos/2646731585372744

@@DailyCorvid actual instances of cultural appropriation is like stolen valor. You steal something which is a cultural achievement or badge of prestige of a people. The most notable instance is the Native American war chief headdress. @@_gold_eye_2656 Stolen valour is stolen valour, there is no such thing as cultural appropriation. Culture is a shared ideal that you cannot own so you cannot steal it either. Stealing makes you took away use of the original like if I stela your car you can't therefore drive it, I now have it. Culture cannot be stolen. Not unless you change the meaning of the word culture, and start trying to justify a system of not-sharing things. If we do that then only the English can speak English, and why would you make a language then prevent people from using it? Madness, this is politically corrected lunacy and I will have no part in it. Culture is like air nobody owns it and nobody has rights to decide that I can't have nor use it

@@DailyCorvid did you even read my comment I’m saying faking symbolic achievements of a culture is no different from wearing a Medal of Honor or a vet hat when you never served. Cultural appropriation is a thing it’s just often thrown around as a fake ass buzz word. If a person who isn’t a US citizen never served in the US military and never won any awards for service suddenly walked around wearing its highest military honors in ceremonial dress for the marines. How is that any different than someone walking around in a war chiefs headdress a rank and position which had to be earned amongst Native American cultures? It’s not. You can speak whatever language you please eat whatever food you please and wear whatever you please. But certain things are exclusive to members of a community that even if you share a culture with you have no rights to.

I asked a sports psychologist one time how much morale matters to an athlete and he said “they’re not robots.” Not only do I think it’s smart to have Scottish regiments but I think every soldier should be encouraged if possible to find strength in their own heritage (like you say, more emphasis on culture than biology) whether it’s Native American or Polish or from Zimbabwe or Japan, every single culture had great warriors at some point is history and we should draw inspiration from them whenever possible.

Just to correct a few misconceptions. Most of the Scots who emigrated to Canada were indeed from the Highlands and Islands. Emigrations started during the 18c potato famine and then accelerated after the Battle of Culloden (1746) where the British Redcoats defeated the Jacobean clans which led to the subsequent 'clearances' whereby whole communities were forced to emigrate (mainly to Canada). After the Culloden defeat the clan chiefs either fled the country to France, executed, stripped of their lands and titles and some including the majority of the Clan MacDonell of Glengarry, emigrated to the historic Glengarry County, Ontario (which is named after the Clan). The clearances was a direct result of the Culloden defeat where the Anglised clan 'chiefs' decided the clansmen should be replaced with sheep resulting in the famous 'clearances' where 10's of 1000's Highlanders and Islanders were brutally forced to emigrate, mainly to Canada.

THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS!!!! We are making a trip to Ottawa this winter and we will definitly NOT miss this! Oh mannn, that explaination of the CLA---LONG SWORD is the best! Our Highland Boardsword HEMA club were discussing a Hanwei Claymore, testing it and such, and it was a certain weighty beast. But that Longsword looks so nimble! Thank you again for sharing this!

During the Anglo-Boer war in South Africa, the Boers thought all the Brits were cowards except for the Scotts. The Scotts often fought to the last man and so the Boers were very impressed with the Scotts.

The kilt was criticised by officers in WWI as giving the Scots special treatment because it gave them extra layers of wool. The bayonet change wasn't what crippled the Highland charge, it was the change in tactics where British troops on Culloden engaged the man to their right rather than the man in front.
@richardconnelly7141
@richardconnelly7141 4 года назад
the kilt easily got caught up in barbed wire,saw pictures of soldiers killed while snared kilts trapped them crossing,true the wool is a good insulator even when wet,bayonet and musket far superior weapon with that technique
@robbrownfield7677
@robbrownfield7677 7 месяцев назад
Not sure where you got that from. Scottish soldiers had a real issue with kilts. They became caked in mud and became very heavy, the pleats housed lice and other parasites, and in winter knees and thighs were prone to chilblains and sores.
