Awesome! I remember when I first moved to Strathpine with parents, discovering all the old and not so old stuff around the neighbourhood. The old rum distillery and the railway tracks that crossed Gympie Road (then Highway 1), the old airfields that had become roads or scrubland, and trace patches of the former rainforest where the Boral gravel works were/are. I only wish I'd gotten to explore the old paper mill one more time before it was demolished for the university.
Hello Rob, come back to the museum, we have some large maps of the five airfields in Logan. It would be wonderful if you would do a story on the airfields.
Hi there. the Drive In that you referred to, was up on the corner of Logan Reserve Road and Beutel Street moreso. The River Glen Haven village now resides on a constructed rise so it doesn't get flooded like the the drive used to. The was a lot of half movies shown there... the fog used to roll in halfway up to the projector house, then the movie was over and passes were given out to come another day, that used to happen on a very regular basis. Keep up the good work!
This is fantastic. It’s so good to see it how it was. I can close my eyes and just picture it how it was. Wow a ferry and no way did those kids walk that far to go to school. It goes to show how much the human race has become so lazy ha ha. And to think a cob and Co would come all the way out here from Brisbane. Looks like horses have become lazy too over time. I think my horse would put on the breaks at Springwood 😂😂😂 thank you so much for this. How fascinating ooohhhh I love history
@Amanda Knight thanks highly for your kind and enthusiastic feedback. Much appreciated for sure. Am currently editing my next video which is about Bethania.
Very interesting, good to see a new Walkabout. I enjoy walking around Tygum Lagoon, If I had known you were there, I would loved to have met up with you my friend! Remember going to the Drive In theatre on date nights, and with friends. 😊
@Julie Schipplock yes would have been wonderful to catch up. I tend to move very quickly when I shoot these videos though 😆 You should come by one night for dinner here!
Awesome video bloke👍👍👍 mum and dad bought a new house there in mid 70’s I’ve been around all my life. Found out heaps I didn’t know thanks for sharing. When I was young I remember going to the big town to go to shops either Beenleigh or Woodridge. Along the old road and the old bridge Remember the cattle trains going along the line and later a tourist steam train in the cemetery on tygum road there were some spanns they lived at the end of Louise street
Some good information about the area. Miss the other cemetery that was bulldozed to build shops at Waterford. Also the fruit and vegie shop at Waterford and the original general store that is now Pernell tyres. If you want some info on Eden's Landing let me know been here 43 years.
Just old enough to remember the old road and original bridge... long before the Logan Motorway, the only way to get to the Gold Coast from Browns Plains was via Waterford and over the range at Edens Landing and Beenleigh... back also when the M1 was single lane each way! Love these videos mate... great work mate and your research time and effort is greatly appreciated! Cheers, Rob (a fellow Rob) 😎
@The Wanderer AUS thanks very much for your feedback Rob. I'm guessing you must have some cool photos of the old roads before all the latest developments. (I have a fondness for the history of roads). Just had a look at your work, great stuff indeed. Where are you off to next?
@@walkaboutwithrob The feedback is warranted mate, your storytelling through editing is fantastic. Yeah, I should dig a few photos out and have a look. Family moved to Browns Plains in 1983, so JUST before the big building and road expansion boom of the late 80's and 90's, which meant I just remember the areas how they were beforehand. I find a great interest in road names and finding out the history of why a road was named what it is... so many people don't realise the link between a road name, and it's history. A good example is Jinker Track Road way over on the north side... (I think you would struggle to even find people who know what a Jinker is/was haha). Thanks for the kind words too mate, next up for me? Probably a trip out Warwick way. Similar to yourself, I like adding on bits about the history and pioneer triumphs and troubles in places I go to and things to see. Lookin' forward to your next one mate!
Your clips are an excellent resource for our students to get to know their local area. Could you do one on some of the indigenous history from the early settlement days please, Thank you so much
Having lived in the area since 2007 I could instantly recognise most places you were but the extra bits of information are fascinating, like the names on the tomb stones exist as street names, or the drive in theatre.
Another interesting look at the local history. The old photos and maps are the most intriguing as always. No chance of adding a source credit for same to the vids? Local Museums, Newspaper Archives, Queensland State Archives?
It's fascinating to me learning the history of these areas that were all my stomping ground growing up. I can't believe I went water skiing in the river there under the bridge as a teenager...talk about young and silly 😂
@shelleigh5993 and I think there have been sharks in the river there. That's what I heard anyway. You would have seen the area change a lot over the years.
And Council is finalizing the design of the Bethania to Logan village section of the Rail trail; - Yarrabilba to Logan Village is done; but the big stretch is next; Yarra to Jimboomba then Beaudesert.
Very enjoyable following you through this historic area. I lived in Louise St not far from the pioneer cemetery & always took holidaying visitors to see it. I thought I knew it all re Waterford... well now I do thanks Rob, great job 👍
I've just moved to Edens Landing and I could see there was so much history about the area. Thank you for showing us. Just a quick question, where were the picture frames hanging on the tree? I'd love to take photos. Once again thanks for this interesting video
@Sharyn Harrison the wooden frames hanging from the trees are to be found at the Henry Jordan Park. The park is located at the end of Abelia Drive. It's a long thin park and the frames are up the further end on the right. Hopefully they are still there and intact.
Our old home at 10:49/11:47.. which used to belong to the Beutels, who built it... early settlers now buried at the Tygum cemetery. I wrote two degrees in the room off on the right of that veranda. The new owner has changed the place considerably.
this was amazing and also is funny re all the comments re Waterford in Ireland. When you live in Waterford QLD and are looking for things you always end up with ads for WAterford in Ireland haha
I was just watching a video on Waterford in Ireland because that's where my mum grew up. It was the mention of the first Europeans to live in Waterford that pricked my ears. I thought it was quite racist, then I checked the description. What a Charlie.
We stopped off there for a bit in 75 on way from northern beach's up to Darwin for the Tracy rebuild , a new rental double story in a new sub division & yard just mud , house was nice & all new & nearly got boiled alive in enclosed shower stall , went to school there a bit , walked through a sad bit of scrub & then made to assemble for some reason in parade ground , common though back then , pushed to sing God save the queen first thing . . for the empire spirit
@@walkaboutwithrob I personally love contributing to my favourite content creators via Patreon, I'm sure others would too! Either way, thanks again for your well researched, entertaining delivery of suburban history. I love that you always endeavour to insert Indigenous history and perspectives where you can. I'm a Brisbane local, will definitely keep an eye out for you and say hi!
@@ahealy1731 thanks so much for your kind and supportive feedback. Maybe when I get a few more subscribers I'll look into setting up a Patreon account. And yes don't be shy, say hi if you see me plodding about!
I thought this was going to be about the real and original city of Waterford. Ireland's oldest city. Disappointingly, it isn't. ☘️🇮🇪 BTW, Fitzgeralds were originally among the Norman invaders.
disappointing how they keep ripping up old railways and removing old drive ins. I guess drive ins really are a thing of the past but they were great and as for the railway it could be resurrected but obviously at a high cost
@neilmclarty9667 That is not correct. Larry Storey Bridge at Waterford is named after Larry Storey, a man who for many years worked for the Logan Village community.
@James Herbst there is no record of an official naming of the area. The name Waterford, which came into general use in 1868, was in reference to the town of Waterford in Ireland.
@@jamesherbst4988 I don't think that's entirely correct. Captain Patrick Logan died in 1830, long before the area of Waterford was settled by the Irish. The first European to settle in Waterford arrived in 1849, 19 years after Logan had died, with the Irish not arriving until the 1860's.
Perhaps, but there were a few “floaters” prior to the 1860’s. If you get a chance, there’s a very old cemetery on Plunkett Road Road (it’s easy to miss) and there’s Irish head stone’s there in Gaelic. Logan was naming places prior to settlement in preparation. Unfortunately, we have too many places named after Logan himself! 😁. Perhaps time to reinstate the “correct” names? Are you interested in making history? ( It mightn’t be popular 🫤)
James Fitzgerald knows how all the Aborigines felt now being forced to give up the land you been living on for ever anyway I'm sure it all worked out for James sth Queensland is a beautiful place today from the coast to the mountains , absolutely keep up your awesome vids mate very interesting they are
