In the video today, we're looking at the fascinating story behind a Christmas story that not only changed Christmas, but also helped re-shape the thinking of many in the world about the impoverished. This is the story of Charles Dickens' "Sledgehammer for the Poor Man's Child", a subject rather near and dear to Dickens' heart as, for a time, it looked like many of their fates would be his own until the death of his grandmother.

I loved "A Christmas Carol". It's one of the very few books that I've read over and over. I've read a half dozen or so of Charles Dickens' other books but found them all so excruciatingly depressing, that I just can't read any more of them.

he doesn't really do rants on here more of a read from the script 3-5 minute video might also be why this isn't the most popular channel of the 9 or 10 in the simon whistler family of channels i do love history and hope they keep it but i don't think most people like it as much because they prefer the casual criminalist and business one where he does go more off the cuff but these are usually at most 10 minute vids and usually on point i also may have read too much into the video like 3 vids ago but i thought this was the change they were taking anyway i hope you find the channels that you like the most sincerely

Very interesting backstory, and it makes it all the clearer how Social Darwinism, and later Eugenics, were able to find so much support in the late 1800s and early 1900s - way before Nazism.

I have independently researched the origins of "A Christmas Carol." The real back-story has nothing whatsoever to do with Charles Dickens. In my opinion, the original authors of the "Carol" were Mathew and Abby Whittier, an American couple. Dickens merely commercialized it for quick publication in the fall of 1843. He only feigned support for social reform as public relations.
