A composition of wildlife footage, archive material and elaborate re-enactments results in a brilliant reconstruction of the life of famed marine biologist and environmental pioneer Jacques Cousteau.
On the trail of the most famous oceanographer of the 20th Century, the team spent two years filming original locations on three different continents, in four different oceans. The film charts how Cousteau’s outlook on the environment changed throughout his many decades at sea around the globe. On his personal journey to enlightenment, he changed from a man who killed sharks in hate and thoughtlessly blew up coral reefs, to a radical environmentalist.
Born over 100 years ago, Cousteau's personality was shaped by his years at sea around the globe. The fact that there are more manatees than ever in Florida is directly due to Cousteau's film "Forgotten Mermaids", which raised awareness and triggered widespread research and conservation efforts for the endangered manatee. "Noah's heir", as the French press called him, publicized his expeditions in films and books. He won an Oscar as best documentary for "World without Sun". He made his first film, "The Silent World" with Louis Malle, which won a Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Born 77 here. Watching this great man's shows on TV with my dad will always be a treasured memory. Thank you Jacques and RIP.

Me too, he inspired me to become a marine biologist with PhD, devoting my professional life protecting this precious ecosystem! Sad to see dynamite used for census of reef, which would never be used today.

Jacques was my inspiration. As a kid my father would ask me what I wanted to be when I got older. I told him, "a Man". After the scolding I told him, " an underwater diver" Years later, Pops is now gone and I have my advanced SCUBA certification. I have swam underwater in many countries. Simply amazing!

In 1969 I was 9 and my grandfather would call my mom to tell her Cousteau was on tv, so I'd get excited for Sunday night show, I was in awe, growing up on the ocean I admired his interest and his knowledge of the worlds oceans, he was a hero of mine.

I grew up with cousteau films, plus the often forgotten Hans Haas. Started diving in 1990, have dived I think all of the sites in your film. Shaab El Rumi, Le Donateur, Port Cros, crystal river. Shaab el Rumi in the 1990s was intact, as when Cousteau was there as when you filmed. You don't need a plastic bottle to find the sharks you go to the point where there is strong current, they will find you. Port Cros there are some big groupers because they stopped the spear fishermen, but the rest is sterile blue water, polluted. There is one place in the mediteranien that you can see what Cousteau saw. Ustica, a reserve off a tiny island near Sicily. It is intact and not polluted. Crystal river, I dived once but since then prefer to snorkel. Manatees, and fish you do not chase, wait quietly they are curious they will sneak up behind you, bump you in the back and look for a caress. Propellers and +5mph speed should be banned in crystal river. We have water jet power systems for boats. But what can we expect from a country that lets adolescents buy AK47 assault rifles.

I loved to watch Cousteau when I was a child. He educated, entertained and celebrated planet earth's beautiful oceans and all the plants and animals who live in and around them. Rest In Peace Mr Jacques Cousteau.

loved this until the closing remarks, to say his family enterprise fell apart or no one has not followed in his footsteps is an incredible understatement. Jean-Michel has done wonders towards education and his grandchildren still carry on the legacy. Pretty ill informed line in the script.

My Dad insisted I suffer through episodes of Cousteau when I was a child. I didn't like it as a kid. Now, I'm an adult and love watching the same thing my Dad enjoyed.

Thanks for doing this balanced thoughtful documentary on Jacques Cousteau my hero, who admittedly made huge mistakes along his journey but ultimately found his voice and did so much to call attention to our beautiful ocean environment. I became a marine biologist because of his inspiration to me.

Being underwater for myself is like going to church for others. The peace, beauty and calm it produces in me makes it hard to return to the surface world. To have a carrier in that industry must be amazing 🤩

I didn't see any large fish, little alone sharks, in the Red Sea, no Barracuda, and so many others, and oddly zero lionfish, even though they have heavily invaded the Red sea and the Mediterranean. By the way, the other name for Manatees is Duogongs not "Sea Cows", unless of course this was shot in 1958, that is when the word dropped from common discourse.

As lifetime professional diver since 1971 - military and commercial oilfield - I read his books at school and held the Captain in great esteem. However, he was a flawed man as most of us are. He's gone but I'm still a commercial diver.

Propellers should be illegal, where manatees stay in the winter....I mean it's common sense...plus they should stop polluting these rivers.. I saw a lot of youtubers carry a lot of sun glasses, e-cigs, and trash out of these springs.
