In the deep ocean, life is concentrated at chemosynthetic oases where primary production is made possible via chemosynthesis at cold seeps and deep sea hydrothermal vents. The non-chemosynthetic regions of the deep are divided into two very different worlds. First is the midwater, where pelagic wanderers tread migratory routes that span entire oceans, and planktonic drifters and their predators take part in bioluminescent light shows. It is separated into zones based on depth, including the sunlight zone (epipelagic), twilight zone (mesopelagic), midnight zone (bathypelagic), abyssal and hadal zones. And below, lies the deep sea floor. A kingdom of mud and ooze, where sessile creatures cling to any solid outcrop and corals craft kingdoms on the seamount crusts. The worlds of the deep sea could not be more different, and yet their stories are fundamentally intertwined. In this episode, we delve into the Twilight Zone.

Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) is a non-profit oceanographic research foundation that has been pioneering deep-sea research and discovery since 2009, on board their old vessel RV Falkor and their new RV Falkor (too). Their remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SuBastian is equipped with a suite of sensors and a 4K camera that has illuminated the depths and live-streamed dives around the world. Most footage shown is filmed and provided by SOI. Huge thank you to them for contributing their footage, and working with me to create this series! Check out their website: schmidtocean.org/

"The deep sea floor is, at first glance, a place of filth and decay -- destitute, perhaps, and full of horrors. But if we look a little closer, we uncover a place of beauty -- a realm where corals craft mighty kingdoms on the seamount crusts; where the delicate structures of sponges provide refuge for others; and where scavengers attend bountiful feasts that last for decades." This is just _achingly_ poetic.

just incredible, i can hear the quiet joy in your voice as you narrate over these wonders of nature, thank you and everyone involved for bringing this series to our screens for free! and thank you for reminding me of the beauty in life! it's humbling to see how life flourishes far away from human eyes.

The consistency in quality of your scripts and narration really do justice to the enthralling subject matter. I've learnt so much from your channel and thoroughly enjoyed my time doing so! I find myself really curious about what the migratory creatures make of Sebastian's lights and cameras - I would have thought they might mistake them for daylight and try to instinctively dive deeper to maintain their camoflague from potential predators... perhaps even more curious about the abyssal creatures, which are used to perpetual darkness and likely have never even encountered a light source! I would have expected at least those with eyes, being adapted for such low light levels, might be blinded and scarper instantly; yet for the most part they always seem as if it's business as usual on film! TIA if you have either any known insights or personal speculations about this? In the meantime thankyou for another fantastic film, can't wait for the next!

The narration by these films, is absolutely brilliant. It's so well explained, I can easily capture all of the essence of the points being made over a long form explanation. As a guy who lost interest in certain topics, finding people who make topics fun to learn has really helped. Brilliant work.

Wow! I thought to myself when I first discovered your film that I had encountered something reminiscent of Wild Discovery or many of the older nature documentaries. However, what you've made here far exceeded this expectation. You have wonderfully descriptive, factual, and expertly written narration such that you don't embellish or seek to add to nature's beauty but yet you enhance the experience of it and plant the seeds of many thoughts, learning, and appreciation with it too. I don't know that I've ever seen scientific narration performed so skillfully! The cinematography is absolutely enthralling and very well edited. It flows and synergizes with your narration perfectly. I look forward very much to seeing more of your work; it is a true gift! Thank you!
