What’s crazy about Shawn is he is willing and able to maintain a certain state of mind. His ability to look beyond his anxieties or disbelief in himself and put that to the side. So he can keep on showing up for his team. I agree with you. It truly is inspiring.

James Jani is different from most RU-vidrs, his work is immensely well made but not every documentary film will be massive because of the subject matter. Subject matter will drive views a lot more on James videos, whereas Mr. Beast, it's his personality that drives the views on his videos. People watch Mr. Beast because it's him as well as his videos are entertaining. James's videos are very much subject driven, so one film will be bigger than another because of the documentary topic.

I think that, though warped by his huge success, his first tweet means lots of sense. Think of it as "it's easier to become a one hit wonder than to have a consistent good run over a long stretch". Virality is usually a strike of luck, while success has to be sustained.

Great podcast, Sean and Nolan!! So many great points. A lot of food for thought...both around business and around life. I have found this YT journey to be quite lonely, at times. When out of balance, I've felt overworked and disconnected. Would love to create a full-time team. People to collaborate with. Bounce ideas off of. People to both celebrate & commiserate with (be connected on the journey). Last year, I committed to meeting up with friends once a week. We do a 3-5 mile run through the forest. No phones, no traffic...just panting/sweating. And we BS for a bit afterwards. It's been great to see friends on a regular basis. Also nice to run again...something I used to do competitively. But the running in it of itself isn't that fun (to me) anymore. I no longer care about winning races. It's the friends that make the run enjoyable. Thanks again, guys. -Robert (fellow content creator)(on a mission to empower people)

2:21 - 6:09 This. This right here. All this time I thought I was alone in this line of thinking. I'm so glad you all said this about Mr. Beast's philosophy. Even if we were to play devil's advocate and say Mr. Beast is NOT saying spend $100,000+ dollars on a video and spend obscene amounts of time planning a video and filming it, it still would fail for 99.9999% of new creators, even experienced ones like myself. You have no following. You have no momentum. Knowing what people want to watch, what is a viral concept, what's a solid thumbnail, what's a good title, what's the proper video structure, what's the proper hook to the video, what's the proper climax to a video, etc., comes with the training and experience through failures. To suggest someone should start off this way is nonsensical. You need to get in there and get your hands dirty and LEARN. Otherwise, you'll just end up with analysis paralysis after your first 3 videos flop and 6 months of wasted time. What Mr. Beast's philosophy REALLY should say (and what I think he's meaning): Quality over Quantity when you know what you're doing.

Thank you for the encouragement about being authentic. As a creator with a niche in healing after abortion, I’ve struggled with ‘how much faith’ to bring into my videos. Based on my personal experience, full healing is not possible without Jesus. I wouldn’t be giving my best help if I excluded that from my videos to avoid offending people. At the same time, the primary goal of the videos is not discipleship. Subtle difference? Yes, but an important distinction I’m trying to navigate.

Mr beast first video got 20k views. If he would have made an video that took months in preparation and resources as he started it would have gone nowhere. This is the reality. Topics with a lot of reach is how you expand. That or algorithms lottery, because that is a real thing. Mr initial push was Minecraft. Sadly, you can’t move up with just artistic vision and quality alone at the beguiling. After that is another story.

Lately I’ve been looking how saturated RU-vid has become. How there is now so many people become influencers and using RU-vid as their platform. I have been discouraged to start even though I’ve been making videos for the past 3 years and not uploading them. Then in the podcast when you guys said it’s deeper that just subscribers or views. I remembered my reason why. It’s because I want to help ppl. There are ppl out there that are probably going through the same thing I’m going to or probably just want a laugh to brighten up their day. I could be that person to help those ppl. I really appreciate everything you guys do on this channel ❤

Excellent breakdown, especially the part about making an epic video vs throwing lots of content against the wall. Smaller creators (like me) can still focus on making better videos over churning out content just to upload something. IMNSHO, the most misunderstood advice about RU-vid is "upload consistently". I think Sean has said before that "consistently" also means making consistently high quality videos, and not uploading because "it's Thursday". Thanks, as always, for the great content. You always help me understand the journey, or give me something to think about that I'll understand later (through experience).

For the quote about it's easier to get 10 million views on one video than 100,000 on a 100 videos, I don't think he really means that it's easy to get 10 million views. He's making a point about quality over quantity. If you listen to how MrBeast talks about RU-vid, he places a great emphasis on coming up with video ideas. Yeah, MrBeast makes really high effort videos now that cost millions of dollars. But didn't he say Logan Paul's name like 100,000 times back in the day? Back when he didn't have the money. In our niches, we have to figure out what is the best video idea and the most high effort way to execute that idea. And don't think I have it all figured out because I don't. I'm right here with you guys. Trying to keep getting better.

Great stuff. Two days ago a student asked why I do not have a channel related to chemistry and science as I teach at a University in North Carolina. I have public speaking experiences (Ted Talk, pitches for start-up 3iNano, etc) and, naively thought my public speaking experience would be a major advantage. I am now realizing the breadth of things to learn and master, such as the framing of the title and intro. I love 18:50 as collaboration, "team" effort, and being open to critiques were mentioned. I agree that a team will yield a better end-product or result than a lone individual. And the creation is likely a lot more fun with a team. I would love suggestions on where to find team members for a person who's friends are not interested in RU-vid creation. I don't know if this is appropriate, but since openness to suggestions was mentioned, I will point out that starting around 11:00 got long winded and got "into the weeds" a little bit. The internal alarm that notifies me is "am I having to really concentrate or is the discussion easy to follow?" I noticed it because I had to pay a little more attention then and because I struggle with succinctly staying on a narrow single topic. But thank you both. I got a lot out of this video.

Here’s the thing. You guys have a different audience than MrBeast right? So making those super high-end videos may not give the same return that MrBeast would get. This only matters if you want to retain your current audience. Is that correct. Can you have both your current audience and a more entertainment-based audience, per se? Just a thought.

And mrbeasts' point being the idea of the video (even within your niche) is the most important thing and putting out a bunch of videos with low views is not a good use of your energy which is why a lot of larger channels are putting out less and less frequently

Biggest takeaway is that RU-vid starts with mental health. Attitude, character, and spirituality are foundational aspects of mental health that need to be dialled in first. We're all going to burnout, it's just a matter of time. Sometimes we burnout before we start. When it happens you need to know who you are and what you want. Only a strong mind with a healthy belief system will save you.

Just as a side note, I agree that films are better than ever, but better LOOKING only, the content is lacking, generally the storytelling is far less engaging than ever, it's almost a "if we look cool that's all that matters" attitude and that's possibly what's driving people to RU-vid for maybe lesser quality in terms of visuals but much more engaging content in the specific areas that they are looking for.
