John Conneely dances a reel in his unique style.
Gay Byrne introduces John Conneely from Knock, Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo, who performs a reel in his own unique style to the music of ‘George White’s Favourite’ performed by John Cleary. The remarkable thing about this is that John had previously been hospitalised for months following a fall on a building site in England which left him with a broken back.
Ciaran MacMathuna who is sitting in the audience describes John’s unique dance as “the fastest reel in the west”.
Planxty and the Chieftans who also featured on the show.

Passive smoking was a part of daily life for non smokers so they may as well have been smoking anyway. A cigarette in a persons hand was as normal looking as a mobile phone today. @SilverSoundAlchemy
@SilverSoundAlchemy 11 месяцев назад
And unlike so many cameramen of this current era, they actually focus on the right thing! It’s so annoying when cameramen filming Irish dancers film the top half of the body. We’re missing the most important part, their feet!
@maggpiprime954
@maggpiprime954 11 месяцев назад
@@SilverSoundAlchemy I dunno... There were a lot of focusing and framing blunders during the Harknell era of Doctor Who.* I think it really depends on the studio, production (live air has all its warts, with no editing), and operator. There are a lot of variables to consider. A wide shot is easier to frame and focus, even with a moving subject, black & white looks sharper than early colour, different types of film were used in studio vs location, and so on (which explains quality differences in Monty Python sketches). At this point, I can't remember the frame-by-frame, but consider also, that film degradation over time kind of flattens the focus differential (per se), so it's harder for us to tell what mistakes might have been made in something that hasn't been reformatted/cleaned up for a digital medium. The equipment used now is a lot better, reliable, and portable. Live to air will always have an element of "reinventing the wheel," and it's easy to choose the few best bits after the fact, so we shouldn't judge the other 70% against those gems. 🤗 * Which has been restored, reformatted from film to DVD, etc., for modern playback.
@SilverSoundAlchemy
@SilverSoundAlchemy 11 месяцев назад
@@maggpiprime954 ok so I’m literally talking about when people film Irish dancers for a show or on the news and they film the top half of their body. In Irish dancing, what’s the point? The top half isn’t doing anything! You’re missing “the money shot”, which is the footwork. When filming Irish dancing, I want to see their feet and legs, not their chest and arms which should be upright, straight and not moving. This cameraman got the money shot- they got the dancer moving and dancing and showing what’s important *in Irish dancing* - the movement of the legs and feet. This isn’t ballet or some other form of dance where the top half of the body is moving and expressing, this is Irish dancing, where the movement is only in the legs and feet. My whole point is that the cameraman did very well capturing Irish dancing. Many don’t. I don’t want to see an Irish dancer’s head and not their feet, it’s pointless.

They were mighty times. Could anyone dance like this today ' I wonder.? There can be no doubt it was probably meant to be a comedy item' but it also respected the tradition. The accordion' was probably a red Paolo Soprani. This was long before the awful modern sounding accordion' took over.

Jaysus! Top tier example of dads & grandpas embarrassing their children in public by suddenly becoming a spaz. I need to study his movements & pass this on to the current generation of new fathers to ensure our children are properly embarrassed like we were back then.
